Back-Roads vs Bunnik Tours

Compare the travel styles, pricing, destinations and popularity of Back-Roads and Bunnik Tours.

The Low Down

Back-Roads As their name suggests Back-Roads itineraries focus on regional tours off the beaten track. Catering for small groups (maximum of 18) they travel through Europe & the UK. While our team at Global Journeys haven't experienced any of their trips first hand, our clients that have chosen to discover Europe with Back-Roads have provided glowing reviews on their return. With an eclectic range of trips to choose from - including canal cruises, this small group operator is well worth considering.
Bunnik Tours A family business based in Adelaide, Bunnik made a name for themselves in small group touring through Egypt, and now travel to all corners of the globe. All of their trips include return flights to and from Australia, so take this into account when comparing prices with other small group Operators. Bunnik tours have been specifically designed for 'the not too young and not too old' with group sizes set to a maximum of 20, and in Africa even smaller groups of 12. Bunnik trips are currently only offered to Australian residents.

Back-Roads
At Back-Roads we have over 30 years’ experience in creating small group tours that focus on forming experiences that immerse our passengers in some of the most incredible destinations in the world. Our dedicated mini-coaches enable us to travel the back roads, avoiding motorways and taking you to the heart of our destinations. We pride ourselves on delivering truly unique travel experiences through expert local knowledge, carefully curated cultural experiences and hand-picked boutique accommodation.

Our tours appeal to those looking for a more relaxing style of travel, and who enjoy culture, good food, meeting like-minded people and exploring destinations in depth. We welcome first-time travellers, but also find that many of our passengers have travelled with us before!
Bunnik Tours
Bunnik Tours is a family business with a focus on crafting itineraries that really get to the heart of all that a destination has to offer through a balance of organised sightseeing, special local experiences and time for independent exploration. We know that some of the best experiences are when you wander away from the group and make your own discoveries.

In creating our small group tours, we are driven by two guiding principles. First, everything we do is about your experience, which is why we only run tours with a maximum of 20 people – that’s less time waiting, more time exploring. Second, when done properly, tourism can be an incredible force for good that generates economic and social benefits in the places we visit.

True Indulgence   0 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2024
The Italian Indulgence tour was my 5th tour with Backroads and possibly the most outstanding. A perfect blend of rural countryside, beautiful lakes and historic cities. There were many highlights for me including staying in the beautiful villas in the Florentine and Langhe Hills, Truffle hunting with Mia the dog, spending time in the elegant Portofino ...read more and enjoying the beautiful Italian Lakes namely Maggiore, Como and Molveno. The pace of the tour was ideal, the hotels away from bus loads of tourists and the culture exquisite. I would highly recommend this tour and the guide, Beatrice. Thank you Tracey and the team at Global Journeys for your assistance in making this dream holiday come to fruition. You have always provided first class service. I will always be a Backroads fan.

Fjords and Glaciers     0 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2024
This was a carefree and efficient way to see such awesome natural landscapes. Would have been good to have a half rest day but otherwise a perfect program of travel itinerary.
World War 1 Battlefields   2 , ACT, Australia, Jun 2024
Fantastic, very full tour. Great driver and very knowledgeable guide. Everyone should visit the Sir John Monash Centre at Villers Bretonneux. What made this tour very moving was that the guide was able to include war cemeteries and locations that had a personal history for people on the tour. This is a tour I will be recommending to family and fri ...read moreends.
Back Roads tour through France   1 , WA, Australia, Jun 2024
Just completed a very enjoyable Back Roads tour from Paris to Nice. Everything was exactly as promised and both the guide and the tour bus were outstanding. Many thanks to Hannah for looking after my booking so diligently and keeping me informed of any adjustments. I will certainly approach Global Journeys the next time I go travelling.
Great highlights tour   1 , NSW, Australia, May 2024
I booked the Backroads Highlights of Britain tour for my 21 year old daughter, who was travelling by herself overseas for the first time. Our Global Journeys rep, Tracey, advised me that most of the people on the tour would be older, and this was good to know so I could discuss this with my daughter. Made aware of the fact, she was still happy to do ...read more the tour as it was a small group tour and went to all of the places in the UK that she wanted to see, and we had heard good things about Backroads tours. The tour leader was probably in her late 20s or early 30s, which definitely helped my daughter to fit in, and she really enjoyed the tour. The other tour group members were very welcoming and friendly, accommodation and food was fabulous and she was blessed with the weather golds, so she enjoyed it immensely. I would definitely use Global Journeys again.
Fabulous tour of Northern Japan.   0 , SA, Australia, Oct 2024
Bunnik's 'Colours of Northern Japan' was an enjoyable experience. We travelled from Tokyo to Sapporo by coach and Shinkansen (bullet train) with 18 other travellers plus Mitchi, our Japanese tour guide who was one of the best. Hotels in all cities were centrally located and comfortable, most near convenience stores and cafes. Breakfasts were always ...read more something to look forward to as were lunches and dinners, mostly Japanese cuisine. ,A dinner cruise around Tokyo Bay and the scenic cruise along Geibikei Gorge were part of the itinerary.

We visited temples, castles, attended a tie- dyeing workshop and painted traditional Kokeshi dolls both of which were a lot of fun.
Most of the hotels in the north had hot springs which were relaxing after a long, busy day travelling. Autumn leaves started appearing as we travelled further north and on the island of Hokkaido they were at their best. A visit to the Sapporo brewery was interesting as was the Sake brewing experience. We travelled with a very cohesive group which always makes it more enjoyable.
We both thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would certainly recommend an Autumn visit to this part of Japan.
Amazing adventure through 5-Stans and Ancient Silk Road.     0 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2024
This was my 9th booking with Global Journeys, although two were cancelled due to the pandemic. As usual, my booking request, and questions were answered promptly and professionally. It was such a pleasure to have Hannah Campbell deal with my booking. I have a 10th booking pending and I’m confident that it will be handled with the same efficiency. This ...read more was my 4th booking with Bunnik Tours, as they are exceptional value for money yet still provide that professional and friendly service. They are an Australian family owned and operated business, have exciting itineraries and operate with a maximum group of 20. I have already recommended Global Journeys, and Bunnik Tours to my family and friends for future travel.
Turkey & Greece   0 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2024
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Turkey & Greece with Bunnik. Organised perfectly by Georgie as always! We had great tour guides in each country, both enjoying passing on their extensive knowledge. So much history in both countries and the extra tours were enjoyable. The highlight was hot air ballooning in Cappadocia! The weather was perfect throughout ...read more our trip and we enjoyed our cruise of the Greek Islands and visiting some of the islands. Looking forward to our next trip with Bunnik.
Fantastic trip to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia     1 , NT, Australia, Aug 2024
The tour was well organised with tons to see, do and learn along the way, particularly given the rich history, geography and culinary experiences available in each country. The special tour inclusions including local cuisine masterclasses and singers/ musicians in unique locations were particularly memorable. Local guides in Azerbaijan and Georgia were ...read more extremely professional and attentive to the groups needs. The local guide in Armenia was also very knowledgeable however could enhance travellers experience even further by proactively sharing practical information with the group well in advance (e.g. how long until next comfort stop).

Overall this was a comprehensive, well-paced, safe, scenic tour with a wide variety of experiences on offer. Each church, mosque, monastery visited also offered a unique experience, often with breathtaking views at each location.

TIPS: Bring good walking shoes, there’s a few challenging landscapes to navigate, but totally worth it! There are many (safe to use) bank machines available in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia to withdraw local currency from including via Australian visa cards. Currency rates are often much better locally than, for example, exchanging AUD cash at Dubai airport. Tour guides also provide opportunities to change local currencies at each land border crossing. In Yerevan, Armenia, you can also change various international currencies at the SAS supermarket (close to Hilton DoubleTree Yerevan City Centre hotel).

@ Global Journeys - Excellent organisation/ facilitation as usual. You are the only travel company we continue to book directly with.
Wonderful Small Group Tour   1 , QLD, Australia, Jun 2024
We really enjoyed travelling with a group of 18 Australians. Our tour guide, Alan, was easy to get on with and he was very knowledgeable. The tour itself was interesting and varied. Turkiye and Greece adventure   2 , ACT, Australia, May 2024
Had a great (although fairly tiring) few weeks in Turkiye and Greece with a Bunnik tour. As always, Georgie from Global Journeys did a flawless job of organising everything. The flights home she found for us were amazing. 24 hours from Athens airport to home in Canberra! We'll be back in touch with Georgie soon to lock in our next trip. :)
