Back-Roads vs Bunnik Tours

Compare the travel styles, pricing, destinations and popularity of Back-Roads and Bunnik Tours.

The Low Down

Back-Roads As their name suggests Back-Roads itineraries focus on regional tours off the beaten track. Catering for small groups (maximum of 18) they travel through Europe & the UK. While our team at Global Journeys haven't experienced any of their trips first hand, our clients that have chosen to discover Europe with Back-Roads have provided glowing reviews on their return. With an eclectic range of trips to choose from - including canal cruises, this small group operator is well worth considering.
Bunnik Tours A family business based in Adelaide, Bunnik made a name for themselves in small group touring through Egypt, and now travel to all corners of the globe. All of their trips include return flights to and from Australia, so take this into account when comparing prices with other small group Operators. Bunnik tours have been specifically designed for 'the not too young and not too old' with group sizes set to a maximum of 20, and in Africa even smaller groups of 12. Bunnik trips are currently only offered to Australian residents.

Back-Roads
At Back-Roads we have over 30 years’ experience in creating small group tours that focus on forming experiences that immerse our passengers in some of the most incredible destinations in the world. Our dedicated mini-coaches enable us to travel the back roads, avoiding motorways and taking you to the heart of our destinations. We pride ourselves on delivering truly unique travel experiences through expert local knowledge, carefully curated cultural experiences and hand-picked boutique accommodation.

Our tours appeal to those looking for a more relaxing style of travel, and who enjoy culture, good food, meeting like-minded people and exploring destinations in depth. We welcome first-time travellers, but also find that many of our passengers have travelled with us before!
Bunnik Tours
Bunnik Tours is a family business with a focus on crafting itineraries that really get to the heart of all that a destination has to offer through a balance of organised sightseeing, special local experiences and time for independent exploration. We know that some of the best experiences are when you wander away from the group and make your own discoveries.

In creating our small group tours, we are driven by two guiding principles. First, everything we do is about your experience, which is why we only run tours with a maximum of 20 people – that’s less time waiting, more time exploring. Second, when done properly, tourism can be an incredible force for good that generates economic and social benefits in the places we visit.

A great experience   1 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2022
The Iberian Inspiration trip was well worth the wait post Covid. Commencing in Madrid and finishing in Lisbon 12 days later, it certainly gave us a excellent overview of southern Spain and a touch of Portugal. Our tour leader, Elaine, was fantastic. Nothing phased her. She is a UK citizen that has lived in Spain for about 19 years. Her knowledge of ...read more the country and her grasp on both the Spanish and Portuguese language was to be admired. Our group was fairly diverse from the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. It gelled together very well adding to the sense of fun on the road. Hotels were all very central to the old parts of cities and towns which again enhanced the experience. This was a trip 3 years in the making, thanks Hannah for you support getting us there.
Tuscan Treats   0 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2022
Great guide Liza and Mohammed as driver made a very good trip. Tour perhaps more suitable for experienced guests as there was a lot of free time, which whilst appreciated by seasoned travellers, may be a little daunting for other’s needing more guidance and advice. Included meals could be improved. Some discrepancies in itineraries with guests caused ...read more some discontent, but was handled by Liza very competently.
Wonderful tour through northern Italy and Switzerland     0 , ACT, Australia, Sep 2022
This trip to me was classic Backroads Touring - visiting a mix of smaller places particularly in Italy with great experiences which you wouldn’t think to do yourself or couldn’t do with a larger group, and a mix of iconic railway journeys with lake and mountain vistas in Switzerland. We had a very small group with a great tour guide who got to know ...read more our group’s interests and with the driver, was able to make minor itinerary adjustments to make the tour even more special.

Highlights in Italy included visits to a small Grana Padano cheese factory (and sampling), a boat trip in Lake Iseo and hike to the church at the top of Monte Isola, and a cooking lesson and wine tasting in the Franciacorta region. In Switzerland, highlights were the trips on the Bernina and Glacier Express train trips, the bus trip over the Sustenpass and the cogwheel train trip above Brienz. A great way to experience these parts of Europe - with some unique moments along the way.
Cornish Delight     1 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2022
I would highly recommend this tour. Even though the name of the tour is Corners of Cornwall, it visits other counties such as Somerset, Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire giving you an overview of each. The famous Wells and Salisbury Cathedrals were highlights. Small group tours are ideal for making new friends, experiencing the country lanes and individual ...read more cultures as well as staying in unique hotels. The standard of the hotels was high, ranging from a historic country hotel in Darmoor to beautiful and stylish hotels overlooking the coastline.

The included meals were excellent; particularly at the Dartmoor Hotel. Not forgetting the opportunity to dine at Rick Stein’s restaurant in Padstow. As a Doc Martin fan I enjoyed visiting Port Isaac and eating the fresh seafood available at most of the coastal towns. Our Tour Guide and Driver were both very professional and entertaining. This tour was my third with Back-Roads and I have already decided on the fourth.
Enchanting Southern Italy     0 , CA, United States, Sep 2022
The tour was well organized. The tour guide went above and beyond to accommodate everyone on the tour. I would book a Back-Roads tour again.
Well Planned Backroads Tour     1 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2022
This was a well planned small group tour by Backroads to the beautiful countryside of Kent. Neil (tour guide) and Steve (bus driver) were excellent in their professionalism and we both enjoyed a relaxed and hassle free trip. The itinerary was well planned, but would have preferred a little more time a Hever Castle. The hotel stays were in great locations ...read more with close proximity to restaurants and services. Wonderful tour of Japan   0 , QLD, Australia, Oct 2022
Thank you to Jemma of Global Journeys in assisting in the organisation of our Japan Discovery tour with Bunnik.
It was a well planned itinerary with a nice balance between private coach and public trains, including the bullet train. The tour gave us a broad insight into the culture and history of Japan with a variety of experiences.

Wonderful Tour to Jordan and Egypt     0 , VIC, Australia, Oct 2022
The tour was well organized and efficiently run. The hotels were good to very good except the one at the Dana Biosphere which was not a finished hotel and many issues involved. Food was generally ok, except that many meals did not cater for a Vegan diet. I’ve not travelled with Bunnik before and for the price we payed I would’ve expected more. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Portugal ! Our group was incredible to travel with and our guide Maria was fantastic!
Fabulous Discover South Australia Tour with Bunnik.   1 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2022
We were most pleased to have Marion as our tour leader. She is a lovely lady. The coach drivers on the mainland and on Kangaroo Island were very cheerful and helpful and had many interesting and informative things to tell us about the places we visited. Our tour was fortunate to have good weather 95% of the time. Beautiful and interesting wine-producing ...read more areas, insight into barrel making, and lots of wine tasting at famous wineries.

Fabulous scenery on Kangaroo Island and the Flinders Ranges and fortunate to see Rock Wallabies frolicking in a canyon in Wilpen Pound. The accommodation was of a high standard and all provided meals were good to excellent except on Kangaroo Island where the first breakfast was delayed for over half an hour for several of our group and the packed lunch of very poor standard. Also, I would have preferred lodgings on Kangaroo Island to be at a place where we could purchase a meal from a fast food place rather than being forced to pay the high prices at our hotel.
Very good tour   0 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2022
I throughly enjoyed this holiday. Having only 20 people made it possible to know everyone. The group I went with were wonderful. We had no disagreements and got on very well. Not ideal. ...read more The local guides were all very nice and knowledgeable. I particularly enjoyed visiting Pompei. Northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia   0 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2022
The holiday was even better than how it was advertised. All hotels were four-star and clean. The guides were superb and the inclusions were excellent. The programme was varied and very exciting. We can't fault the company at all. The cruise in Croatia on the final 7 days was superb. Apparently the companies require deposits 12 months in advance. Such a pity!
