Itinerary

Your epic journey through lava fields and windswept landscapes begins in Reykjavík, the world's northernmost capital. From the colour and character of Laugavegur to the warmth of its locals, this quirky city welcomes you in. Explore Viking heritage, stroll the Old Harbour or snap a photo at The Sun Voyager. Later, meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers over drinks and small bites.

Tonight, check into the Grand Hotel Reykjavík, our Stays with Stories accommodation, where nods to Icelandic myths and nature set the tone. In the lobby, you'll spot dramatic glasswork by local artist Leifur Breiðfjörð. Later tonight, you'll head out in search of the northern lights. Stay: Grand

Explore the small capital city of Reykjavík on a sightseeing tour with your Travel Director this morning. View all the city's major attractions including the Parliament, the Harpa Concert Hall, and the city's main landmark, the Hallgrímskirkja Church, perched at the top of a hill in the heart of the city.

Leave the city behind and travel through the undersea tunnel Hvalfjörðr to Akranes, whose local Folk Museum you visit before enjoying views of the rugged coastline from the town's lighthouse. View Deildartunguhver, Europe's highest-flowing hot spring, followed by a visit to Reykholt, famously the former 13th-century home of one of Iceland's most loved authors, Snorri Sturluson.

Nature takes centre stage this afternoon, when you view Hraunfoss and nearby Barnafoss, both beautiful waterfalls in their own right and a soul-stirring way to end your day. (B) Stay: Vesturland

Bundle up warmly as you make your way to the wild, sea-swept landscapes of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. You'll soon discover why it's fondly called 'Iceland in miniature', revealing glaciers, waterfalls, lava fields and volcanic peaks all along this compact stretch of coast. Watch for seals basking on black sand beaches and admire the fairy-tale mountain of Kirkjufell that rises like a spire beside the sea.

Return to Borgarnes for a relaxed evening at leisure. Perhaps take a stroll along the town's peaceful waterfront promenade, visit the Settlement Centre to uncover Viking history or simply unwind with a hot drink while soaking up views of the fjord. (B)

As you travel around Iceland's 'Golden Circle', Mother Nature's magic touch can be seen around every turn. Visit the 'Golden Waterfall' of Gullfoss, saved at the turn of the last century by the tenacity of a farmer's daughter who threatened to throw herself into its depths if it was developed for hydroelectric power.

Then, head to the world-famous hot spring area of Geysir and see Strokkur shoot a spectacular plume of water and steam high into the air. You'll see first-hand how the movements of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates have carved into the Earth's crust, in the UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park.

This evening, Connect With Locals with a local storyteller and her songwriter husband, and delve into their colourful family history, then join them for dinner at an exclusive Be My Guest experience. Continue to Selfoss later, where you'll stay overnight. (B/D) Stay: Selfoss

Start the day with a visit to Iceland's newest geothermal heat and electric power station in Hellisheiði, the second largest of its kind in the world. During this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience learn why Hellisheiðarvirkjun is a world leader in the utilisation of geothermal energy.

You can almost feel the Earth simmering under the surface as you journey across Reykjanes Peninsula, a UNESCO Global Geopark. This is the only place in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level. View Strandarkikja and let some of its legendary powers bring you good luck. Then, watch as sulphurous steam emerges from the lunar landscapes surrounding Lake Kleifarvatn. Dive into Culture with a dip in a natural lagoon (please remember to pack your swimwear), where the steaming waters are said to have healing powers.

This evening, reminisce over the myths and legends you've encountered along the way, during dinner with newfound friends and your Travel Director. (B/D) Stay: Grand

For now, it's time to say a fond farewell to Iceland after an unforgettable trip. (B)

Iceland in winter   5 , VIC, Australia, Jan 2018
A week in an Icelandic winter did not disappoint despite the short daylight hours. The scenery, and ever-changing landscapes are just amazing so bring a big memory card. The weather is really unpredictable though, so pack clothing you can layer, thermals and good winter-proof coat waterproof boots. Trafalgar provide "crampon's" to fit over shoes so read more this definitely helped with the icy paths. I was surprised how expensive Iceland is so be sure to keep to stick to a budget as its very easy to overspend. Of course the northern lights was the number one thing to see, however due to poor weather and lack of solar activity it was not meant to be this time.
Iceland   1 , QLD, Australia, Dec 2017
We had an amazing trip with Trafalgar in Iceland and it was a Christmas we'll never forget. We had an excellent Icelandic tour guide and driver who helped us understand the culture and history of this unique and incredible country. We would love to go back.
Wild adventures   5 , Qld, Australia, Sep 2017
Yes we would use Global Journeys again, very efficient and helpful. Iceland was more than we expected. Wild wilderness areas and then scenic coasts and pretty towns. The glaciers were spectacular, the waterfalls jaw dropping with their rainbows. Our driver Ziggy very friendly and a safe driver. Our guide Hildur was a local and was very informative, read more also was not over the top with you had to do things her way, let you make your mind up to do things or not. Accommodation was about three star clean and mostly comfortable. We went in early September, 2017. Were lucky enough to see the northern lights three or four times. People were a mix of Americans, Aussies and kiwis. All in all a great experience.
Very good trip 3 , SA, Australia, Mar 2017
We really enjoyed this trip with Trafalgar. The hotels were a great quality, the places visited were unhurried and extremely informative. The Tour guide Gulla was invested in keeping us happy, which we appreciated. The tomato greenhouse was amazing to see as well as the tomato soup for lunch. the waterfalls, the geothermal plant, the blue lagoon, the read more horses, the museums were all as I would expect from Iceland. They were all amazing!! A couple of suggestions though - extra activities would have been welcomed. In saying that, Gulla organized a snowmobiling ride on a glacier and also organized a final night to see the northern lights even though they weren't on the trip itinerary. These we paid extra for, but could have been included in the optional extras package. Luckily Gulla realized we wanted these extras and organized them for us at the last minute.

Booking through Global journeys was so super easy. Yvonne contacted me within the day of our tour quote request and everything was sorted within a couple of days. All paper work was received in good time and everything was complete. I would definitely book the Global Journeys again!
Over promised and under delivered 3 , NSW, Australia, Jan 2017
The experience of booking this tour with Global Journeys was a joy, as always, and we will book with you again. However, Trafalgar tours are expensive than most of the other tour operators, so a better quality of accommodation, food and itinerary is expected. We believe the tour did not meet our expectations. The welcome dinner at Reykjavik was just read more sliced tomatoes on a piece of bread, and the farewell dinner was just soup and bread. Hotel accommodation on two nights out of four nights was very ordinary. The tour guide would benefit from acquiring better people and planning skills.
Iceland for everyone 2 , VIC, Australia, Aug 2016
Tour was very good value, Iceland was wonderful, bit expensive. My accommodation as a single was very average. Hotels provided excellent meals and service. The days were a bit long but there was a lot to see. All included trips were wonderful, but some of the extras not up to scratch. Overall a place not to be missed.
