Itinerary

Welcome to Frankfurt and savour an opportunity to see the sights on your own before meeting your Travel Director this afternoon for an orientation of Römerberg and the financial district.

This evening, enjoy a Welcome Reception with your fellow travellers, including a light dinner and welcome drink to kick off your discovery of the best of Germany. (D) Stay: Sheraton Offenbach

Resist the alluring calls of Loreley and board your leisurely cruise along the Rhine. Glide past vineyard-clad hills, stopping for a Be My Guest experience. Share stories of knights and feuding lords and ladies over lunch before continuing to Cologne, where we'll view the Gothic spires of its magnificent cathedral during our orientation of the city. (B/L) Stay: Steigenberger Köln

Journey through the lush green landscape of Lower Saxony as we make our way to the international trade centre of Hamburg, where we'll join our Travel Director for an orientation tour of the city's iconic sights. Spend some time at leisure exploring the city's seafaring heritage. Wander along the trendy Mönckebergstrasse, visit one of the city's brewhouses or consider a guided cruise through the city's harbour and discover why Hamburg is called Germany's 'Gateway to the World'. Tonight, we will dine at our hotel. (B/D) Stay: Crowne Plaza City Alster

Follow the picturesque Elbe Valley from Hamburg, crossing the former ‘Iron Curtain' to the historic city of Berlin, whose once-turbulent history has shaped its rebirth as a charismatic capital city. Join your Local Specialist to explore the iconic landmarks of unified Berlin. See the Neo-Renaissance Reichstag, the Tiergarten, Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden. (B) Stay: Catalonia Berlin Mitte

Enjoy a full day to explore Berlin on your terms. You might choose to join an Optional Experience uncovering the city's defining moments with a Local Specialist visiting the Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie and what remains of the Berlin Wall.

Later, you could head out of the city on another Optional Experience to Potsdam and Wannsee to see the site of the 1942 Wannsee Conference, cross the Glienicke ‘Spy Bridge' and wander through the UNESCO-listed gardens of Sanssouci Palace. (B)

A short drive south brings us to Dresden, the ‘Florence on the Elbe', where we'll hear about the city's restoration following its devastation during World War II as you admire its beautiful Baroque façades. See the Semper Opera, Zwinger Palace and the fully reconstructed Frauenkirche. Consider delving into the treasures of Dresden, joining an Optional Experience to explore this elegant city. (B) Stay: Bilderberg Bellevue Dresden

Visit the village of Mödlareuth, which inherited the moniker of 'Little Berlin' due to its wall separating 'east' and 'west' Germany. Gain insights into a divided Germany at its open-air museum and see a section of the original wall with its security features.

This afternoon, arrive in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg, once the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire and today the economic, social and cultural capital of Franconia. During your orientation see the mighty castle ramparts and stand in the Hauptmarkt main square which is dominated by the impressive Frauenkirche, a great example of the Gothic brick-style architecture of the region. Spend the rest of your day at leisure indulging in the local specialities. (B) Stay: Park Plaza Nuremberg

Stroll through the narrow lanes of Rothenburg – its beautiful medieval centre seemingly frozen in time and encircled by a fortified town wall that remains intact after centuries. Admire the beautiful market square, lined with half-timbered houses, and the Old Town Hall before travelling through the Bavarian countryside to Munich. (B) Stay: Holiday Inn Westpark

During your time in Munich, see the distinctive towers of the Cathedral, stroll through Marienplatz, and admire the impressive town hall with its charming Glockenspiel. A short walk from here takes you to the 13th-century St. Peter's Church, the Viktualien food market square, and a traditional beer hall.

Later, join a Local Specialist for a guided visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, a powerful experience that offers insight into this dark chapter of history. (B)

Travel through the beautiful countryside to a land of fables and folklore. This morning, we tread in the footsteps of shy King Ludwig II and visit his Neuschwanstein Castle (Subject to Availability), built as a retreat for the king to withdraw from public life. We continue through the magical countryside to the Black Forest, whose mystical landscape inspired fantasy and fiction from the famous Brothers Grimm.

This evening over dinner, we learn from a local expert about Hofgut Sternen's innovative design and the traditions of the Black Forest on MAKE TRAVEL MATTER®  Experience. (B/D) Stay: Hofgut Sternen

Witness a Black Forest treasure as you Dive Into Culture and learn about the centuries-old craft of cuckoo clock making. Later, travel to Heidelberg and perhaps have the chance to capture views of the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, as well as the Baroque-style Old Town. Spend the rest of the afternoon finishing up some last-minute shopping before continuing on to Frankfurt.

Tonight we enjoy a Farewell Dinner with your newfound friends, reminiscing over the iconic and unexpected highlights of our trip. (B/D) Stay: Sheraton Offenbach

After breakfast, say a fond farewell after a memorable holiday. (B)

What a brilliant trip around Germany. 0 , VIC, Australia, Aug 2023
We can highly recommend Hannah as our travel agent, Global Journeys as an organisation to deal with and the trip itself. We met brilliant like minded people from all around the world. Loved the old towns and our knowledgeable guide. The ease of having our luggage taken care of for us each day, made it so much more comfortable. It was awesome. Highly recommended.
Best off Germany 2 , ACT, Australia, Jun 2023
Tracey did a great job with organisation. The tour guide was excellent, great German language and knowledge. The coach group was a great mix of age ranges. The Best of Germany did not depict how much of the tour was devoted to war history, nor did I expect to have such long days sitting on a coach which was not good for me as I have Peripheral Artery read more Disease. Hotel accommodation was fine except for being on outskirts of city - not my preference and therefore would not repeat. The Sheraton Hotel in Offenbach was disappointing in that the aircon hadn't been working properly for weeks - hardly a recommendation for German engineering.
Best of Germany - five stars   4 , NSW, Australia, Apr 2023
Highly recommend the Best of Germany tour. The tour director and local guides were outstanding. Incredibly insightful, thoughtful, and generous with their time. Our tour director Agnes Kruger, was so funny, kind, generous with daily sweets and songs, so helpful, even organised birthday cake and presents for me. We all told her she was outstanding. read more The hotels and breakfast were very generous and had loads of variety. Drivers were very skillful amongst tiny streets.
Loved it! 4 , VIC, Australia, Jun 2019
Maya is a great Tour Director, very friendly, approachable and full of knowledge about the history and current details of Germany. Would love to travel with her again! Peter the driver was a caring person, excellent driver and always helpful. Trafalgar - reintroduction of name tags for fellow passengers please!
Best of Germany 3 , VIC, Australia, Sep 2018
Very good trip, excellent tour director and coach driver and the route of the trip. We only feel the coach seat a little bit narrow for leg movement; the schedule of the trip was a little tight for aged people over 70.
Exciting trips 3 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2018
This trip is lovely and Rob is certainly is accredited for it. Thanks as well to Hannah and Global Journeys.
Carefree holiday 2 , VIC, Australia, Jul 2017
Everything is taken care of when you travel with a tour company. No need to worry about missing trains or carrying heavy suitcases. You have enough time to look around each place you stop. Touring with new friends you meet was my highlight. Global Journeys took care of everything, highly recommend this company. They keep you informed. Jemma was very professional.
Wonderful history and cultural review 3 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2017
Global Journeys did a great job of making the tour happen! As promised we toured all around the major cities and had great sunny weather to boot! Coach travel and WIFI is top notch. Hotels were mainly above average but a few somewhat remote (Munich) so hard to then go back and sightsee. We visited the highlights of each town especially the Altstadt read more (old town) areas and castles/churches. Quite a contrast to the modern shopping available in other parts of a few towns!

Trafalgar Tour Guide was excellent - knowledgeable, personable and flexible. This was my first experience with tour travel. I found the pace a bit hectic and would travel with a friend next time or my husband. Twin share doesn't always work out. Overall, excellent value for money. Extra sights were added and the tour delivered on its promise. Glad I went and toured with Global Journeys and Trafalgar.
Excellent tour of Germany 1 , QLD, Australia, Jul 2016
This was a well organised tour which enabled us to see a lot of the main cities in Germany in a short space of time. The tour director ( Esther) was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. Each time we arrived at an hotel, all we had to do was collect our key from Esther and head off to our room. All the check in was already sorted and in most cases read more our cases were already in our room waiting for us. We have been on these kind of trips before with other companies, and we've enjoyed them all but I can't rate Trafalgar highly enough. We will definitely be travelling with them again.
Germany was a great country to visit 2 , WA, Australia, Oct 2015
For this tour, our tour guide was Colette Endstrum. Colette was an absolute mine if information about Germany, it's history, culture and politics. This was of great interest to both my sister and myself. Colette made the group feel as if it had been her best tour and this is areal skill. Petre, the driver was a very skilled , and was very courteous read more and helpful - especially as my sister had some physical struggles. Germany was a great country to visit.
