Itinerary

Welcome to the fiery Spanish capital that is Madrid. Take in the vibrant essence of Madrid before meeting up with your fellow travellers and Travel Director for a memorable welcome reception and orientation drive to see some of the city's most iconic sights. (D) Stay: Rafael Atocha

Leave Madrid and travel north through the Guadarrama mountains, crossing into the wide plains of Castile. Stop in Burgos, once the capital of the region and an important point along the Camino de Santiago, where your Travel Director introduces you to the old town where you'll see its impressive Gothic cathedral.

Your journey continues through changing landscapes into the Basque Country. In Bilbao, take in the bold, modern design of the Guggenheim Museum as you view its striking exterior beside the river. (B/D) Stay: Tres Reyes San Sebastián

Spend the morning soaking up the laid-back charm of San Sebastián. Wander along La Concha beach, explore the old town or enjoy a coffee in one of the city's elegant squares.

Later, travel inland to Pamplona, known for its bull-running tradition and medieval streets. The rest of the day is yours to explore the city at your own pace. Follow in Hemmingway's footsteps on an Optional Experience that uncovers Pamplona's highlights, or try the local pintxos in one of Pamplona's bars. (B/D) Stay: Tres Reyes Pamplona

Your journey continues through the Ebro Valley to Zaragoza where we'll view the Basilica of El Pilar and Cathedral of La Seo. Later, arrive in Barcelona to soak up the charm of a city that professes two great loves – Gaudí and football.

Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Perhaps amble through the aromatic La Boqueria, or join us for an evening of discovery, rounded off with a traditional Catalonian-style dinner. (B) Stay: Leonardo Royal Barcelona Forum, Hotel Barcelona Condal Mar, Affiliated By Meliá , INNSiDE Barcelona Apolo by Melia

Consider joining a morning Optional Experience to the mountain-top monastery of Montserrat to see the shrine of the Black Madonna, the patron saint of Catalonia.

Afterwards, the whimsical fantasy world of Gaudí is on display as you embark on a sightseeing tour to visit the inspiring, but as yet unfinished, La Sagrada Família* in the company of a Local Specialist. *Please note that with the construction of the Sagrada Família nearing completion, access to the basilica may be restricted for special masses, pilgrim visits or official ceremonies, and we are unable to secure tickets to visit. Should this occur during your tour, you'll visit the Hospital de Sant Pau instead, a striking example of Catalan Art Nouveau designed by Gaudí's contemporary, Domènech i Montaner.

Afterwards, join your Local Specialist in the gardens surrounding the Sagrada Família and take in the extraordinary exterior of Gaudí's iconic masterpiece. (B)

The sweet scent of oranges accompanies you on your journey along the Costa Dorada to fortified Peñíscola, where you'll see the ancient castle used in the film 'El Cid'. Continuing through fertile huertas, arrive in sunny Valencia where you will stay the night.

Your orientation of this cultural city includes views of the modernist style Mercado de Colón, the Bullring, the Towers of Serrano and Quart, and the Art Nouveau Estación del Norte. Witness the modern verve of Valencia and view the City of Arts and Sciences, a large-scale urban recreation centre for culture and science, designed by Santiago Calatrava. During one of our iconic MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences, enjoy horchata, the celebrated drink of Valencia. (B) Stay: Novotel Valencia Lavant

Journey by the dramatic Sierra Nevada Mountain range to the city of Granada where you meet a Local Specialist for a sightseeing tour of the spectacular UNESCO-listed Alhambra. Its golden façades and extraordinary Moorish architecture reflect centuries of multi-cultural history, which you will have a rare opportunity to explore as you wander through its palaces and exotic water gardens. Check in to your hotel later, where you will dine tonight. (B/D) Stay: Occidental

Set your watch to Spanish time and enjoy a leisurely morning on your terms, or consider taking an Optional Experience to explore the medieval Moorish Quarter of Granada - the Albaicín - with its narrow winding lanes, churches, minarets and palaces. Then leave Granada behind for the sun-kissed shores of the Costa del Sol, where you'll spend the next two nights.

The rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Stroll along the beachside promenade, relax at one of the nearby beach cafes or visit the picture-perfect whitewashed Andalusian village of Mijas - the choice is yours. (B) Stay: Meliá Costa Del Sol

Another day in paradise for you to kick back, worship the Spanish sunshine and taste la buena vida. Enjoy fresh seafood in Torremolinos, relax on the bleached beaches and soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere or consider an Optional Experience to the effervescent Andalusian capital of Málaga to explore centuries of history. (B)

A scenic drive takes you past the millionaires' resort of Marbella and on to La Linea. Cross to the Rock of Gibraltar for free time to explore or consider joining an Optional Experience to St. Michael's Cave to see the Barbary Macaques (Rock Apes).

Then walk through the old Jewish neighbourhood, passing by the remains of the 14th-century Mudéjar-style synagogue. Continue to Toledo for an evening in Spain's former capital. (B/D) Stay: Eurostars Toledo

Your Local Specialist takes you on a walking tour of Toledo where you'll Dive into Culture as you explore this ancient hilltop city. Visit the Church of Santo Tomé, home to El Greco's masterpiece – 'The Burial of the Count of Orgaz', and the synagogue, the oldest one still standing in Europe.

Disappointing Best of Spain 1 , WA, Australia, Jun 2016
We would certainly book again with Global Journeys, and Michelle White our Tour Consultant, was excellent. Our travelling companions were fun and a good mix of cultures. The drivers were excellent. However the quality of the hotels was not up to 4 star standard and the tour director lacked knowledge of Spain or the language nor was she very helpful. read more The Be My Guest dinner was poor in comparison with our previous experiences. In general the included and optional meals left much to be desired, except for the dinner at La Castafiore (dinner at the opera) which was exceptional and the standard we expected.
All churched out 2 , QLD, Australia, May 2016
Although the logistics of the tour was up to Trafalgar's high standard, the sites of the tour were far too repetitive. At times we felt that religion was being preached to us rather than the history of the area. We will, of course, recommend Trafalgar & Global Journeys to all who ask, but not, perhaps, Spain.
Fantastic tour director 1 , Australia, Sep 2014
Good points: Fantastic tour director, great knowledge and passion for her country, great sense of humour and organisational ability under stress. Excellent accommodation, tour excursions etc. Not so good points: Too much time allocated for 'shopping', most of the tour members were older folk who like us did not really appreciate this. First driver read more while obviously skilled in low speed situations had an annoying habit of 'sawing' at the steering on the highway. Conclusion: This tour is a better proposition for younger/more mobile folk than older less mobile clients.
Wonderful tour director and a great driver 1 , Australia , Jun 2014
Lydia was a wonderful tour director and established alot of trust and confidence immediately. She was always very personable and approachable. Joao was a great driver and an artist on the road. He managed the coach smoothly and we always felt safe with his driving. In terms of my booking experience, I felt Kirby often took too long to respond (sometimes read more 2 days) which did leave me feeling doubtful. (Ed. Sorry to hear about the delays you experienced with Kirby at Global Journeys, as we pride ourselves on our speedy responses. Thanks for the feedback.)
Many highlights in the trip 2 , Australia, May 2014
There were many highlights in the trip, the one that took the crown was viewing of art collections in the Pardo Museum (Madrid) with the local guide. She did a fine job briefing us with knowledgeable background of each outstanding painting. She convinced us the museum collection is so impressive we stayed behind and spend the rest of the day to follow read more the recommended viewing list she handed to us. One cannot but be moved to share a room wall to wall with master pieces by the like of Titan, Van Gogh, El Greco, Goya, Rembrandt, Claude Monet etc, it was feast for the soul. Also our fare well dinner was in a well-appointed restaurant in down town Madrid. Our tour director arranged three amigo tenors who did many popular Spanish numbers including the 'Granada'---their combined voice matching that of the mighty Plácido Domingo. We sang along and many bought their CD as mementos. Lastly, my salmon main was well presented, very tasty and generous in portion. Thanks for organising the trip for us.
I highly recommend this to anyone who can keep up the pace 1 , Australia, Apr 2012
The tour was good value for money, the tour director and the driver were both very professional and went out of their way to help. The tour director was as flexible as she could be given the tight schedule we had to keep to. The bus was very comfortable and having a toilet on board was an added bonus. The tour did not give me enough time to enjoy some read more of the places we visited at my own pace. In future I would look at not going on all the optional tours so I can concentrate on just relaxing every now and then. The restaurants the tour chose for us provided us with excellent service and food. Overall the accommodation was comfortable and clean, however, I would have preferred that the hotels were closer to the centres of the cities so I could do more exploring on foot. The accommodation on the last night in Madrid was appalling; it was disappointing to end the tour in such a dreadful place. All in all I highly recommend this tour to anyone who can keep up the pace.
