Itinerary

A sea of pastel pinks, yellows and blues dot the seven hills of the romantic Portuguese capital, which you will have an opportunity to explore today before meeting your fellow travellers and Travel Director for dinner and an orientation drive past some of the city's most iconic sights. (D) Stay: Turim Lisboa, Olissippo Marquês de Sá

Delve into Lisbon's centuries-old seafaring heritage today, paying tribute to the brave men who set off from these shores to discover the ‘New World'. With your Local Specialist, see the shimmering white Monument to the Discoveries, the iconic suspension bridge spanning the Tagus River, and Belém Tower, built as a fortress protecting the city of Lisbon.

Dive into Culture on a sightseeing tour of the UNESCO-listed Hieronymite Monastery, an exquisite testament to 16th-century Manueline architecture and art. There's time to join an optional trip through the Golden Triangle, visiting Estoril, Cascais and one of Lisbon's stunning royal palaces, before perhaps enjoying a traditional Portuguese dinner accompanied by the soulful and touching sounds of the Fado this evening. (B)

Journey across the Tagus this morning and drive south towards the Serra da Arrábida Mountains and to the golden pastures of the Alentejo. The hearty aroma of traditional Portuguese cuisine fills the air at your Be My Guest experience. You'll connect with locals over lunch in the family home of a historic stud ranch, where Lusitano horses were reared for King João VI in the 18th century.

Your Portugal trip itinerary continues further south, bound for the sun-kissed shores of the Algarve – your home for the next two nights. (B/L) Stay: Holiday Inn Algarve Albufeira

Today, visit the historic resort town of Lagos – once home to Henry the Navigator and a key port during the Age of Discovery. Later, stop in the lively coastal town of Albufeira and enjoy some free time to stroll through its charming streets, then enjoy some free time relaxing at the beach or exploring local cafes and shops. (B)

Journeying north, travel to the ancient Alentejo city of Évora. Join your Local Specialist for a visit to the elaborate cathedral, Roman temple and the Chapel of Bones. Then, spend the rest of your day delving into the medieval history of this enchanting city. Trace centuries of history along its city walls, kick back with a bica and bolo in Praça do Giraldo or perhaps join an Optional Experience to the medieval village of Monsaraz. This evening you dine at your hotel. (B/D) Stay: M'AR de AR Muralhas

The first stop today is in the quaint hilltop town of Castelo de Vide with its charming white façades, narrow alleys and fascinating Jewish Quarter. Travel north towards the Serra de Estrela mountains and arrive later in Viseu, set high on a plateau near the famous Dão vineyards. Explore the city's rich art and architectural history, and see the 12th-century Sé, standing imposingly on a hill overlooking much of the city. (B) Stay: Grão Vasco

Vineyard-clad hills provide an enchanting backdrop for your journey today through the Douro Valley, where Port wine is produced. Explore the magnificent gardens at the Baroque-style Palácio de Mateus, depicted on the label of the distinctive Mateus Rosé wine bottles. Continue via Guimarães for views of its impressive 10th-century castle, before arriving in the riverside town of Porto where you will spend the next two nights. (B) Stay: Turim Oporto, Carris Ribeira

Join a Local Specialist today for a sightseeing tour in Porto, which takes you past baroque churches and along the winding cobblestone lanes that tumble down towards the Douro River. See the remarkable bridges that span the river and the Gothic Church of St. Francis. Visit the Stock Exchange Palace with its splendid Arabian Hall inspired by Granada's Alhambra, then Dive into Culture and into the centuries-old tradition of local Port production at a tasting in a Port cellar.

Spend the rest of the afternoon strolling through the historic centre of Porto admiring the azulejo-clad facades, or visit Livraria Lello, the city's oldest bookstore. (B)

Soak up the grand atmosphere of one of Europe's greatest and oldest universities with a Local Specialist, then stroll through the ancient streets and squares of Coimbra, before journeying to the Templar city of Tomar. We join a Local Specialist to visit the Convent of Christ, originally built as a Templar stronghold in the 12th century.

Later, we arrive in the pilgrimage centre of Fátima, visited by millions of Catholic pilgrims, where three young shepherds famously saw apparitions of the Virgin Mary. (B/D) Stay: Santa Maria , Fátima

En route to Lisbon, with a Local Specialist, stop at the imposing monastery of Batalha – a UNESCO World Heritage site and the best example of late Gothic architecture in Portugal. Our next stop is the fishing village of Nazaré, before we visit the medieval walled city of Óbidos with its whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets.

Celebrate our last evening in Portugal over dinner in a family-run vineyard, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. Toast to an incredible journey over organic wine and locally sourced flavours. (B/D) Stay: Olissippo Oriente, Moxy Alfragide Lisboa, Olissippo Marquês de Sá

Say a fond adeus to your fellow travellers at the end of an unforgettable Portuguese holiday. (B)

Best of Portugal tour 1 , QLD, Australia, May 2023
Oh my goodness I just got back from my first tour with Trafalgar exploring Portugal and saw so many wonderful things that I would not have gotten did it on my own. Our tour guide was so creative within the structured itinerary. For example she organised opportunities for people to speak one on one to vintners or to see an amazing bookstore. And the read more passion that she has about Portugal brought the history and culture to life. Having said all of this, without Jemma's wonderful guidance and support during the whole booking process, it would not have been possible. Jemma has such wonderful experience and made the whole process seamless. thanks for such am amazing holiday and can hardly wait until September for the Greek Islands.
Lovely Portugal 2 , SA, Australia, Oct 2022
Our tour director, Pedro Pinto was excellent. Really enjoyed his banter and very informative on the areas we were driving through and places we visited. By the end of our trip though we realised that Trafalgar at this time is not the type of tour we are after. We prefer to get out from the bus more and get to walk around places more. We did enjoy read more the tour though. Portugal is steeped in history with some beautiful scenery and interesting towns and cities. Both Tracey and Georgia from Global Journeys were in touch as necessary and everything for the tour was sent to us well in advance. We didn’t need to worry about a thing.
Great guide and driver, just too many cathedrals 5 , VIC, Australia, Oct 2019
I have used Global Journeys before and will use them again. Just don't think Trafalgar is for me. Would have liked more variety in sights. Optional dinners quite expensive. I didn't do many of them thankfully, but others that did were unimpressed.
The name says it all - best of Portugal 3 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2018
This tour with Trafalgar was a gem. The pace was comfortable for those of us not quite as young as we were. There were the hidden gems, and the local guides were also very good. Our leader, Tiego, was informative and well organised especially with our large group. There was a good mix of cities to visit, along with villages and attractions. The booking read more process with Hannah at Global Journeys was easy, with all queries being answered quickly. Bring on the next trip.
Worry free holiday - Portugal   6 , NSW, Australia, Aug 2017
Trafalgar tour was great value with great places visited such as Lisbon, Cascais and Porto. Accommodation was excellent overall, nice hotels in good locations, good breakfasts and facilities. Majority of fellow travellers were retirees, kept to themselves, the only drawback. Hannah at Global Journeys was great, provided excellent service, helpful and read more prompt to answer questions, would definitely recommend and use again despite living in a different state. Thank you!
Perfect portugal 5 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2016
I have only one comment on the Trafalgar Best of Portugal Tour. Everything was excellent, but I felt it was degrading for our superb tour guide to have to feel he almost needed to beg the participants to pay a gratuity at the end. After giving such superb service, it would be better if the tour operators paid the guides and drivers a decent wage and read more built it into the cost of the trip.
Portugal was a wonderful holiday destination 3 , WA, Australia, Sep 2016
Portugal was simply amazing. The people everywhere we went were friendly and helpful. Our tour director and drivers were excellent. The Be My Guest visit at a traditional stud ranch was fascinating. In terms of optional experiences - Monsaraz should not be missed. The last few days of the tour were crammed with different experiences - but it was exciting read more to see the walled medieval cities, the manor houses, the monastery even if it was a whirlwind! Global journeys were excellent - preparing a quote quickly and offering guidance. I am about to book a third trip with Global Journeys.
Fantastic Portugal trip 3 , VIC, Australia, Aug 2016
Really great trip through Portugal, a country with very varied landscape. Travel through cork plantations to grapes for the famous port, then down the coast to fishing villages. The hotels were close to city centres.
Best of Portugal - Excellent 2 , QLD, Australia, Jun 2016
The whole tour was of great interest. It was in great part due to the Tour Director (Peter Pinto) who was superlative. The accommodation was four star with one exception and was very satisfactory. The coach driver was very skilled. The booking process was satisfactory as Michelle was always available to answer queries. I was a late decider and the ticketing read more etc. went quickly and efficiently. The itinerary was exceptional and early summer proved a good time to travel.
Excellent value for money 1 , Australia, Oct 2011
I was very sceptical about booking through an online agency but was very pleasantly surprised by the prompt service and suggestions. My holiday was booked very quickly and without any problems and I was happy that I could take advantage of the special Trafalgar offer. I've sent the Global Journeys weblink to all my friends and family and have inspired read more them to take a similar trip. My Portugal tour with Trafalgar was incredible and being an avid traveller, it would be the best tour I have taken. The Tour Director obviously had a great of input in designing the trip, and his expertise, enthusiasm and knowledge of his country was very much appreciated and enjoyed. The hotels were superior and the included food was excellent. The optionals were great and I thought the whole tour package was excellent value for money.
