Itinerary

Embark on an epic encounter with the American Frontier.

This evening, meet your Travel Director and fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception and then soar 550 feet above the center of the Las Vegas Strip on the High Roller, the world's tallest observation wheel. With sweeping 360-degree views of the Las Vegas Valley and The Strip you'll take in all the glitz and glamour. (WR) Stay: Horseshoe Las Vegas

We leave the shimmering Sin City skyline behind as we journey to the canyons and towering cliffs of Zion National Park, following the footsteps of brave pioneers and first nation settlers. Then it's onward to the enchanting landscapes of Bryce Canyon. Admire its rusty red limestone spires that rise up surreally from the desert floor to meet Utah's skies. (B/L/D) Stay: Best Western Plus Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel

Travel north to Utah's capital to see its Mormon center – Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Learn about the basic beliefs and history of the Mormon pioneers which brought about the building of the temple and the Tabernacle, home of the Tabernacle Choir. Explore the city on your own to find local cuisine all surrounded by picturesque mountains. (B) Stay: Sheraton Salt Lake City

Take in the sites today as we journey out of Salt Lake City. Head north to Jackson, which stands in the shadows of the Teton Range. You'll have time this afternoon to settle in and explore this mountain town, which has an Old West look with a modern twist. (B) Stay: Modern Mountain Motel

Journey through the alpine terrain of Grand Teton National Park en route to the UNESCO-listed Yellowstone National Park. We spend two nights in the world's oldest national park at one of its cozy lodges, each with their own unique setting and atmosphere. (When the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park is closed due to weather conditions, the itinerary will travel west from Jackson via Idaho and enter the park through the west entrance.) Explore the rusting walls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, keeping a keen eye out for bison and elk, before joining your Travel Director for an exploration of the park's bubbling hot springs and mud paint pots. Old Faithful puts on an spectacular show as its water arcs impressively up into the air. And there amidst the geothermal wonderland, we enjoy a relaxed evening under the canopy of Yellowstone's stars. (B)

Tip your Stetson in tribute to "Buffalo Bill" whose hometown of Cody is our next stop on this pioneer sightseeing trail. Visit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West museum complex to gain a deeper understanding of the "Spirit of the American West." Then it's on to Big Sky Country where we'll enjoy a Be My Guest dinner at the historic Billings Depot. Built in 1903 and visited by presidents, governors, Hollywood celebrities and even royalty, you'll reflect on the past while hearing local tales from a historian and enjoying a delicious three-course meal prepared by local chef.  Chef Jordan has created a menu featuring four unique entree choices along with a decadent dessert to finish off the evening. Our day begins with a visit to Little Bighorn, the infamous battlefield of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Venture into the Black Hills of South Dakota as you make your way to the base of Crazy Horse Memorial. Admire the colossal carved face of the famed Lakota war chief and learn about preserving Native American Culture before continuing to Rapid City. (B) Stay: The Rushmore Hotel & Suites

Visit Mount Rushmore to view the faces of former American presidents etched into the granite rock-face, then choose to venture into Badlands National Park.

This evening Dive Into Culture with Stephen Yellowhawk who will regale you with stories of his tribe's history during a festive Farewell dinner. (B/D)

Our foray through the American Frontier at its end, we say farewell to newfound friends and traverse some of the West's most beautiful terrain as you travel through Wyoming's expansive grasslands to Denver, the Mile High City.

On arrival check into your downtown hotel for your overnight stay and prepare for your exciting rail journey through the Rockies. (B) Stay: Sheraton Denver Downtown

Rise early this morning and make your way independently to Union Station where you will check in and board a coach for a quick transfer to the Rocky Mountaineer train. Hop on and get comfortable in the reclining leather seats as you are greeted and welcomed with a beverage. Today you will wave goodbye to Denver and cross the Continental Divide as you take in the spectacular views of rugged canyons and the Colorado River through panoramic windows. Enjoy the staff's commentary and comradery of your newfound friends while indulging in the menu and service. Perhaps you'll even choose to step out onto the vestibule to get a breath of fresh air and experience the many tunnels that have been carved into the mountains before arriving at the resort town of Glenwood Springs where you will disembark and enjoy an overnight stay. (B) Stay: Assigned by Rocky Mountaineer

Return to the Rocky Mountaineer this morning and leave charming Glenwood Springs behind. Another day of awe-inspiring sights awaits as you make your way across the Colorado-Utah border. Stunning mountain views, red sandstone landscapes and even occasional wildlife such as pronghorn emerge as you approach Moab, the gateway to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Part ways with the charming rail staff this afternoon and transfer to your Moab hotel. The rest of the day is yours to do as you please. (B)

Your adventure with Rocky Mountaineer comes to a close as you transfer from Moab to Salt Lake City via motorcoach. You will arrive at Salt Lake City International Airport at approximately 3 pm, please be aware when booking your return flights.

Be My Guest

  • Billings: Welcome to old Billings. Learn all about Billing's railroad history during a Be My Guest experience at the historic Billings Depot. Built in 1903 as a hub for three major railroads passing through town, it is now a non-profit organisation designed to give you a feel for Billings in the early 1900s. A historian from the nearby Western Heritage Centre will be your host for the evening and will share the rail industry's importance to Big Sky Montana. Afterwards, a local chef will delight you with a three-course menu.

Iconic Experience

  • Las Vegas: A true must-see. Live “Viva Las Vegas” from the sky as you hop on the High Roller, North America's tallest observation wheel standing 550 feet tall. The 30-minute ride offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the glittering lights and neon signs of the Strip below.
  • Zion National Park: Unlock geological history as you walk the paths and trails of Zion National Park, following in the footsteps of Native Americans and the earliest pioneers. The lush vegetation, wild rivers, roaring waterfalls and towering cliffs of this park will have you reaching for your camera over and over again. You'll even drive through the amazing 1.1-mile, sandstone Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel built from the late 1920s through 1930, when it was the longest tunnel of its type at the time.
  • Bryce Canyon National Park: After stopping at Sunset Point this afternoon, Bryce Canyon awaits. You're right in the heart of it all with your accommodations just three miles from the park entrance, maximising the time you'll spend in the park.
  • Bryce: Giddy up and get ready for an unforgettable evening of old-fashioned western fun, music and great cowboy food at Ebenezer's Dinner and Show in Bryce Canyon. This favourite will have you tapping your toes and smacking your lips after a filling, tasty meal of flat iron steak, baked salmon or BBQ chicken.
  • Salt Lake City: Get ready for the key features and local secrets of Utah's capital on an orientation tour with your Travel Director. Check out its Mormon center and Temple Square as you delve into the past of its Mormon settlers.
  • Bryce Canyon National Park: Hello, hoodoos. As you arrive at Bryce Canyon National Park, enjoy seeing the pink, orange and rusty-red limestone spires, known as hoodoos, rise up from the valley floor. Explore the visitor center to learn more about the history and geology of the park before a scenic drive along Bryce Canyon Road with possible stops at Sunrise Point, Sunset Point and Inspiration Point. You'll love seeing how Bryce Canyon, home to the largest collection of these spires in the world, is in a league of its own.
  • Jackson: Spend the afternoon exploring the charming cowboy town of Jackson, WY. Stroll through the antler archways at Jackson Town Square before heading to the famed Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and grab a seat on a horse saddle. Walk through local art galleries and boutique shops to find the perfect souvenir.
  • Grand Teton National Park: Get your cameras ready for Grand Teton National Park's shimmering peaks of the Teton mountain range rising up above forests and lakes. You'll love exploring the park's alpine landscapes with your Tour Director who shares details about the 40-mile Teton Range. Explore the Thomas and Colter Bay Visitor Centers, Jenny Lake and Colter Bay overlooking Jackson Lake, one of the highest altitude lakes in the United States.
  • Yellowstone National Park: Yellowstone National Park. A bucket list destination and a must-see icon. Established as America's first National Park by President Grant in 1872, Yellowstone is famous for its hot springs, bubbling mud pots, vast canyons and lush forests and a variety of terrain including alpine mountains, prairies, valleys and waterfalls as well as a diversity of nature including the hydrothermal features. Explore the Southern Loop of Yellowstone with your Travel Director who shows you the must-sees and highlights, paired with background information of this huge, ever-changing national park. See the splendour of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, keep an eye out for bison in Hayden Valley, and witness Old Faithful blow off some steam.
  • Cody: Jump into the playground of the wild west. Glimpse into the "Spirit of the West" at the Buffalo Bill Center for the West Museum complex. Boasting five museums on its campus, this “Smithsonian of the West” will immerse you in the sounds and sights of the Wild West. You'll feel like you've been transported back to a time of cowboys and cowgirls, outlaws and Native American warriors.
  • Little Big Horn: There's no better place to learn about the Battle of Little Bighorn than visiting the famous historical site itself. Explore the Visitor Centre to get oriented with the history of Custer's Last Stand. With your Travel Director driving along Battlefield Tour Road where General Custer and his men were roundly defeated by combined forces of Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal warriors in 1876, feel echoes of the past come alive on this one-of-a-kind experience.
  • Black Hills: Unlock the history of Crazy Horse Memorial. Learn how construction began in 1948 after Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, commissioned Korczak Ziolkowski, who worked on construction of Mount Rushmore. While the original idea was to carve a face into rock like Mount Rushmore, the monument will ultimately have a full body and horse. There is no completion date yet, but the face of Crazy Horse was completed in 1998 at 87 feet 6 inches (26.7 m) high. Enhance your visit exploring The Indian Museum of North America that is also part of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.
  • Mount Rushmore: The grand faces of Mount Rushmore National Memorial await. View the faces of four of America's most important presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt - dramatically etched into the granite rock. Mount Rushmore tells the story of the birth, growth, development and preservation of the United States. From the history of the first inhabitants to the diversity of America today, visitors will come face to face (literally) with the rich heritage we all share.
