Sea, Surf & Sanctuaries

Leave vibrant Lisbon behind and start to get acquainted with some of Portugal's smaller gems. Stop in the medieval town of Obidos and join an orientation walk through some of its picture-perfect streets. Next, visit the charming coastal town of Nazaré, a magnet for surfers. Take a short drive to Alcobaça for some free time to visit the Church of Santa Maria Monastery. Later, en-route to Tomar, stop at Fatima, one of the most important Marian shrines, and visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. (B/D) 130 mi / 210 km.

TOUR HIGHLIGHT - LEGENDARY LIVES: The monastery of Alcobaça is a unique masterpiece of Gothic Cistercian art. See the tombs of King Pedro I and his Castillan lover, Ines de Castro, and hear about the heartbreaking tale of these ill- fated lovers. The king never stopped loving Ines even after she was murdered, and during his life he commissioned matching tombs that sit together so that they can look at each other as they rise from their graves.

Today, three historic towns are on the menu. This morning, visit the stunning town of Tomar and discover the town's strong links to the Knights Templar when you visit the Convent of Christ. Later, continue to Coimbra and visit the University, one of the oldest in Europe, which gives it the nickname the “City of Knowledge.” Enjoy a scenic drive en-route to Porto. (B) 130 mi / 210km.

TOUR HIGHLIGHT - CULTURE & TRADITION: The University of Coimbra is distinguished as the oldest university in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world, it is also one of the best known and internationally celebrated. Reach Evora in the heart of Alentejo and visit a traditional cork factory. (B/D) 224 mi / 360 km.

LOCAL FAVORITE - LOCAL CRAFTS: Known as the “cork capital of the world”, Portugal is the world's leading producer and exporter of cork, with the Cork Oak tree being native to the region of Alentejo. For hundreds of years, one of the most well-known uses of cork is as a wine bottle seal, however it's much more versatile and many articles such as bags, keyrings, jewelry, and shoes made of cork can be found in local shops. Portugal in depth   0 , TAS, Australia, Jun 2025
Wonderful experience with the very professional Globus staff. We travelled to so many places, entered into buildings that I would perhaps not have given a second look at to discover beautiful gardens and architecture. We even back in time to working townships from the 10th century .I would not been able to have covered the breadth of Portugal nor learnt read more so much history as I did with the Global staff. I met many fellow travellers who said they only do Globus tours, I am now a convert to bus trips!
Portugal in Depth 1 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2024
A comprehensive tour with a very knowledgeable guide in Pedro. The whole itinerary was enjoyable. Whilst so many, the cathedrals and castles were stunning and scenery breathtaking. A highlight for me was Porto - it has been my screensaver for several years! A trip not for the faint hearted with cobbled tile pavements and at times challenging steps into read more buildings. Accommodation in Lisbon at the Hilton felt like a prison, stark black corridors on each floor with room numbers impressed into the carpet at the door. Globus we arrived early and you offered transfers airport to city for A$80 pp each way! The airport was less than 10 kms away and organized transport could be booked for A$40 a car each way - not nice. The group of over 40 was a good one - everyone mixed and proved good company. (GJ. Organised transfers offered by the operator will always be more expensive than local transport options which is why, if tour clients are confident travellers, we recommend catching an Uber or taxis in most cases. However, some clients prefer the safety and knowledge that everything is pre-planned and pre-paid before they arrive.)
Comprehensive tour of Portugal 10 , QC, Canada, May 2019

Fabulous Portugal trip 9 , QLD, Australia, May 2019
Portugal In Depth was an excellent tour. We got to see so much of the country and I just loved it. Everything was quality. The guide was well informed and the coach was new. The hotels were all good as were the meals. A great tour of people. Just couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
Excellent itinerary for a tour around Portugal   11 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2018
This was a well planned itinerary visiting many places of interest. The hotels were of a very good standard and all were centrally located. The tour guide and driver were excellent and the included meals were of a high standard.
Extensive Trip Through Portugal   29 , WA, Australia, Oct 2017
The accommodation throughout was excellent with spacious twin rooms. Breakfasts in all of the hotels was of a good standard. The coach provided was very comfortable and the driver was pleasant and skilled. Out tour director was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and very enthusiastic in showing us his country. We all learnt a great deal from the read more tour director ( Rui ) as he was able to answer any queries and questions put to him. He was at all times jovial, gracious and inclusive with all passengers.

Schedules were all adhered to and the days itinerary was presented and explained to us prior to departure or on the bus as we left for the day. Rui was very concerned with client comfort and went out of his way to point out amenities required along the route and offered a variety of suggestions for our free time. The local city guides were also pleasant and knowledgeable and provided us with plenty of local information, history and anecdotes.
One of my best tours 10 , WA, Australia, Aug 2017
Really organised, had a great driver and tour leader and my fellow travellers were great. Saw some absolutely beautiful areas and sights. Dined both on the street and restaurant style. Was really looking forward to Portugal and this tour didn't disappoint.
Delightful information trip through Portugal 7 , VIC, Australia, Aug 2017
This is an excellent way to see Portugal. The Tour Guide was very informative, if anything he spoke a little too much. The accommodation was very good some of the hotels were 5 star, not expected for the price of the tour.
The tour was excellent value for money and went at a very comfortable pace.
11 day Portugal in Depth (Globus) 10 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2017
Overall the tour was very good. The tour guide Rui was excellent - his personality suited the job. He was v knowledgeable, patient and responsive. We enjoyed his company and the group awarded him a medal for his efforts. The hotels were mostly good a couple in Oporto and the Algarve did not have air circulation or air conditioning and we had a few hot read more nights!

From the itinerary description we thought we would see Sintra (the brochure said Sintra district) but did not which was disappointing. Luckily we stayed on and saw Pena palace etc later. The tour group was larger than we expected but it was very well managed by Rui the tour guide. We enjoyed our holiday.
Portugal in Depth is a wonderful way to see Portugal!! 9 , QLD, Australia, Jun 2017
Our tour started in Lisbon on 29 June which was a perfect time as the weather was just perfect. We had no rain on our whole trip and saw some amazing places. Our Tour Guide, Uri, was very helpful especially as one of our travellers had a back problem and couldn't visit all the places so Uri just organised for her to rest up at a lovely spot so that read more she could take in the atmosphere at least.

We met some travellers from other parts of Australia, the UK, and America so it was a varied group and the coach was so comfortable and fitted with Wifi so easy to keep in touch with family at home. My favourite place was probably Lagos on the way to the Algarve and we could have just stay there for days and days but unfortunately we had to move on to the Algarve instead which was equally enjoyable too.
