Overview

Read 8 reviews and enjoy exclusive savings on Cosmos 22 Day Canadian Train Odyssey with Alaska Cruise. This train adventure across Canada begins in Toronto, ends in Vancouver, and includes beautiful scenery and fun-filled activities in some of Canada’s most popular cities. A highlight of this Canada train tour is the 3-day, 3-night journey on VIA Rail’s the Canadian—a premier continental train—from Toronto to Jasper. In refurbished art deco rail cars and domed observation cars, enjoy views of the ever-changing landscapes as you leisurely travel through Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and read more Alberta. The spectacular landscapes on your train trip are just a part of the amazing scenery you’ll witness on this Canada rail tour. Marvel at thunderous Niagara Falls on your boat cruise past the falls.

In the Canadian Rockies, ride the Ice Explorer—an all-terrain vehicle—on Columbia Icefield, an expanse of ice that is 750-feet thick. Stop in breathtaking Lake Louise, where gorgeous turquoise waters mirror the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Spend time in wonderous Jasper National Park—with its rugged mountains, glaciers, alpine meadows, rivers, and abundant wildlife—and Banff National Park, home to majestic mountains and picture-perfect scenery. Also travel through Yoho National Park, with its famous fossils, and Glacier National Park, with its scenic wilderness wildlife. From the Pacific Coast, sail to Victoria through the scenic Gulf Islands, a diverse archipelago.

Throughout this Canada train tour, enjoy included city sightseeing and also have time to explore on your own. Plus, enjoy a 7-night Alaska cruise through the stunning Inside Passage, one of the world’s most picturesque sea lanes. Hear the roar as ice breaks off and “calves” into the sea—it’s spectacular! Your cruise stops include Juneau; Skagway, an important town during the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898; and Ketchikan. See spectacular mountain scenery, stunning lakes, picturesque towns, gentle prairie fields, and exciting cities on this rail tour across Canada—with an Alaska cruise!

Itinerary

Welcome to Toronto! Your Tour Director is on hand late this afternoon to answer any questions.

Begin the day with an orientation tour of Toronto that includes City Hall, the downtown banking district, Rogers Centre, and the stunning CN Tower. Leave the city and travel along the shores of Lake Ontario to Niagara Falls. Sightseeing here includes a Niagara Falls cruise for an exhilarating ride to see the thundering Falls up close. Fall even more in love with the falls with an optional excursion to Skylon Tower for spectacular views and a buffet lunch. Return to Toronto and spend the evening exploring the city sights on your own.

Please Note: Operation of the Niagara Falls sightseeing cruise is subject to favorable weather and/or river conditions. Favorable conditions usually exist from May to October. When conditions are unfavorable, a visit to Journey Behind the Falls will be substituted.

This morning, transfer to Union Station for a departure on The Canadian, VIA Rail's premier transcontinental train. Spend the next three days and nights on this classic trip across Canada's heartland. Your Sleeper-Plus class rail cars are refurbished art-deco cars from the 1950s. Domed observation cars let you enjoy views of the Canadian countryside as you roll past Ontario's landscapes. Chef-prepared meals offer a tempting array of soups, salads, main courses, and desserts. (L/D)

Today, watch the scenery as you whisk by the ever-changing Canadian landscape and travel the full length of the Canadian National Railway's breathtaking mainline. (B/L/D)

The Canadian glides through Winnipeg, before continuing the journey through Manitoba's prairies and into Saskatchewan. (B/L/D)

Arrive in Jasper this morning and enjoy an orientation tour of the townsite. The remainder of your day is free to enjoy the ambiance of this wonderous mountain setting. Go with the flow on an optional scenic float trip on the Athabasca River.

Today is at leisure. Make your day magical with an optional narrated cruise on Maligne Lake to the much-photographed Spirit Island*. On the return journey, stop to view mighty Maligne Canyon. This afternoon, perhaps hike on the trails and watch for wildlife, or stroll the streets of Jasper.

*This optional excursion begins operating in late May/early June.

Board your motorcoach this morning and journey through Jasper National Park, stopping along the way at the Columbia Icefield to experience the Ice Explorer, an all-terrain vehicle that travels on ice measuring 750 feet (250 meters) thick! Continue down Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise, known for its stunning turquoise waters that mirror the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Arrive in Banff National Park for a leisurely 2-night stay. An orientation tour highlights Banff's unspoiled beauty.

The day is free to independently explore. Perhaps stroll Banff Avenue, the main thoroughfare with boutiques and souvenir shops in this resort town or hike in some of the surrounding 2,564 square miles of parkland which are home to wildlife, including elk, deer, and grizzly bear. Take your day higher with an awe-inspiring optional helicopter ride over the Canadian Rockies! Your Tour Director can offer many suggestions for activities and dinner.

This morning, leave Banff National Park and travel over Kicking Horse Pass on the Continental Divide. Travel through Yoho National Park, where pre-Cambrian fossils were discovered, and Glacier National Park, where recreational mountain climbing was introduced to North America a century ago. Late this afternoon, arrive at the cattle-ranching center of Kamloops.

As you travel through the Coast Mountain Range to its majestic Pacific coastline, the vegetation changes from desert landscape to lush alpine forest. Board your afternoon ferry for the spectacular crossing to Vancouver Island. Sightseeing in Victoria includes the Inner Harbour, Bastion Square, and Thunderbird Park. This evening, consider taking a relaxing stroll along the lovely Waterfront Promenade.

Be sure to discover some of the attractions this splendid city has to offer, including the Royal British Columbia Museum, Afternoon Tea at the Empress Hotel, and fine shopping along Government Street. Take time to smell the roses on an optional excursion to see the 55-acres of incredible floral displays at world famous Butchart Gardens or have an adventure at sea on an optional whale and wildlife watching cruise.

This morning, set sail across the Strait of Georgia and through the spectacular Gulf Islands. After arrival in Vancouver, transfer to Canada Place and board your cruise ship. Your package price includes Holland America's ‘Have It All Premium Cruise Package.' (D)

Spend the day cruising one of the world's most spectacular waterways. Located along the coast of British Columbia, the Inside Passage is the longest sheltered inland waterway in the world. Watch the water for orcas and humpback whales. (B/L/D)

Located at the foot of grand mountain peaks on Gastineau Channel, Alaska's capital city of Juneau has massive Mendenhall Glacier and the Juneau Icefield at its back door. Visit the rustic shops in town—or get out and kayak, raft, hike, whale watch, flightsee, or fish. There is no end to the adventure because of the long daylight hours. (B/L/D)

In winter, the sidewalks are all but rolled up in Skagway, so you can imagine the frightful conditions endured by gold prospectors who passed through en route to the Yukon. Take your time and poke your head into every little shop, from the Trail Bench to Lynch & Kennedy's Dry Goods. The Red Onion Saloon, with its honky-tonk piano and costumed barmaids, is a treasure trove of memorabilia featuring pictures of Klondike Kate, Peahull Annie, and other historic characters. To complete the picture of those rip-roaring days, visit the nostalgic Trail of '98 Museum. (B/L/D)

Glacier Bay has more actively calving tidewater glaciers than anyplace else in the world. How does it feel when a colossal chunk of ice splits off a glacier and crashes into the sea? The sound is like thunder. The impact shoots water hundreds of meters into the air. You hold your breath as you capture the moment on camera, then you wait for it all to happen again. (B/L/D)

Alaska's “First City” of Ketchikan is so named because it is the first major landfall for most cruisers as they enter the picturesque fjords of the Inside Passage, where the town clings to the banks of the Tongass Narrows, flanked by green forests nurtured by abundant rain. An important hub of the salmon-fishing and -packing industries—visitors can try their luck on a sport-fishing excursion or simply savor the fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants. It is also one of the best spots along the Inside Passage to explore the rich cultural sights of Native Alaskan nations like the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. (B/L/D)

Arguably one of the greatest cruising routes in the world, the Inside Passage stretches through stunning landscapes, from Misty Fjords National Monument to famed Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. Sailing the Inside Passage offers opportunities to spot some of Alaska's most iconic wildlife, with humpback whales and orca plying the bountiful waters alongside the ships, bald eagles soaring overhead and brown bears lumbering on the shoreline. (B/L/D)

Your cruise ends this morning. Sightseeing in Vancouver includes Stanley Park, Gastown, Chinatown, and many other famous landmarks. The remainder of the day is free to explore Robson Street and experience British Columbia's premier shopping and entertainment location. (B)

Today is at leisure for independent sightseeing. Maybe take a water taxi to lively Granville Island with its outdoor markets, street musicians, and waterfront cafés. Elevate your adventure on an optional aerial tram ride up the mountain for exquisite views and a walk through a rainforest canopy at Grouse Mountain & Capilano Suspension Bridge.

Your vacation ends this morning.

Mixed Feelings 0 , QLD, Australia, Jun 2025
About Tracey at Global Journeys - excellent service with our bookings and very helpful whenever we sent through a query. About the trip itself, we felt that we paid a premium price for a 3 star holiday, though the cruising part on the Zaandam was quite good. The Meet & Greet in Toronto, was more of a check-in than a social experience as there wasn't read more a Welcome Drink in sight. The guide was a nice person, but over the course of the journey, did not really seem interested in interacting with most of the people on the train leg or when we were off the bus, so many of us did not get a sense of any sort of personalised service from our tour guide.

Toronto accommodation was good, but generally went downhill (genuine 3-star places) from there, especially the property in Vancouver, where we encountered mice in our room. Most of the motels did not have a functioning restaurant or bar, which was disappointing after sitting in a bus all day ! A lot of people were not prepared for being without phone or internet access on the train - these sort of things should be better communicated to people. That is as much as I want to comment on for now, but while we saw and did some really nice things, we felt pretty disappointed with the overall trip part of the experience, not the booking and admin by Global Journeys! We would encourage people to really investigate the rail and bus part of this tour as there are quite a few things that we felt should have been said and done to match the price you pay for your adventure.
Canadian Train Odyssey 1 , WA, Australia, Aug 2024
I feel the Vancouver section of the tour should have been completed before the cruise and included Whistler or Capilano as this was a highlight - we did this ourselves, I also feel like we were dumped before the cruise and tour should have included sights of Vancouver. The accommodation in all places was excellent , the train journey to Edmonton was read more excellent and the food on the train was amazing. I felt parts of the tour overall were a little rushed. When we arrived in Vancouver we had a day before the cruise and 2 days after, I feel we should have had all the days before the cruise and there were places to see that should have been included like Capilano or Whistler. Overall it was a wonderful holiday.
Canadian Train Odyssey & Alaskan Passage Cruise   2 , VIC, Australia, Aug 2018
Could not be happier with the way our tour was organised and operated. All enquiries were answered promptly by Georgie before we left. Georgie made our decisions easier to make. All transfers, of which there were many, went exactly as planned which saved a lot of frustration and hassle. The tour director Scott McEwan was fantastic, very informative, read more answered any and all questions from us and made sure we were on time and where we were supposed to be.

The train from Toronto gave us spectacular views and we had fun sleeping, eating and rocking our way to Jasper. The coach tour through the Rockies exceeded our expectations, everywhere you looked there was a photo to be taken. We were very lucky with the weather, sunshine throughout. The transfer to the ship was well organised and we had 7 lovely days cruising, eating way too much, and looking at the sea life and beautiful scenery. It was a trip of a lifetime. Highlights were the train, glacier walk, scenery, zip lining, Grouse Mountain, Butchart Gardens... there were just too many.
Half of Canada and all of Alaska in three weeks. 5 , WA , Australia, Jun 2016
Scenery breath taking and beautiful especially the Canadian Rockies and Lakes. Highlights being Magline Lake and the Columbia Ice Field. The cruise with Holland America comfortable and satisfied except for the compulsory tipping both on board and the land tour. On board ship wine at meals had to be purchased which I found unsatisfactory. Train cabin read more very tiny and cell like. The Chelsea Hotel which began the tour from Toronto is like a railway station, large and with little atmosphere. Other hotels ranged from average to pretty good. Time of year mid June perhaps a little early for warmer weather but was not too bad. Take some warm clothing! Fellow travellers a mix of various nationalities. The Americans very friendly, others average and a couple of nasty Aussies.
Fantastic tour experience 4 , QLD, Australia, Jun 2015
I highly recommend this trip. Such a fantastic holiday. The Rockies are magical with stunning views. Canada and Alaska has spectacular scenery. I love the group enthusiasm amongst newly made friends. Fantastic tour experience overall.
The Cosmos tour was great 5 , NSW, Australia, May 2015
The Cosmos tour was great. The Tour director and driver were a wonderful, helpful and knowledgeable team. The accommodation provided was excellent, much better than I had expected. I would not hesitate to recommend a Cosmos tour. What I could not recommend was the train trip. I had a dream of travelling the world by train - that dream is gone. The read more train is always late waiting for freight trains so instead of adjusting the timetable they adjust the speed at night to make up the time. It is a well known practice apparently. For most of us it makes it too scary to sleep at night as the train jumped, rolled and banged its way across Canada. Most of us managed 2 hours sleep in the early mornings. So even though we were scared witless we still arrived in Jasper 7 and a 1/2 hours late, at 7.30pm - our free time in Jasper gone. The train staff gave no apologies, no sympathy and no lunch or dinner!!!!
