Itinerary

Welcome to Los Angeles! We begin our two-week trip uncovering the must-sees of the American West at our Welcome Reception in your hotel. Meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers this evening for light appetizers and refreshments before your first full day. (WR) Stay: Beverly Hills Marriott

This morning, unlock all the glitz and glam that Los Angeles has to offer. Cruise around Beverly Hills, known for its mansions, high end shopping and celebrity sightings. Snap a picture of the iconic Beverly Hills sign as we drive down Santa Monica Blvd.

Your next stop is Hollywood, a larger-than-life symbol of the entertainment business that beckons tourists with landmarks like the TCL Chinese Theatre and star-studded Walk of Fame, historic music venues like the Hollywood Bowl, and the Dolby Theatre, which is home of the Oscars. We'll have some free time to find your favorite celebrity star and grab some lunch on Hollywood Blvd before making our way to San Diego for two nights. (B/D) Stay: Embassy Suites

Embark on a sightseeing tour with your Travel Director, taking in some of the key sights of San Diego, California's second largest city. Travel through the city's historic Gaslamp Quarter and learn about its past, present, and local secrets. Move on to Balboa Park, one of America's most famous urban cultural parks and home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Finish up at historic Old Town, the first European settlement in present-day California, with free time for lunch. The afternoon is yours to relax or enjoy an optional experience of touring the USS Midway or taking a San Diego Harbor cruise. (B)

Cross large swathes of the desert southwest on your way through California and Arizona. Spot the iconic saguaros as you traverse the great Sonoran Desert stopping in Yuma and Gila Bend en route to the trendy Arizona town of Scottsdale.

This evening, the Valley of the Sun shines brightly as you enjoy free time to explore its galleries, boutiques, and chic eateries. Perhaps dine on Southwest cuisine or sip on a cool margarita as the sun sets. (B) Stay: Sonesta Suites Scottsdale Gainey Ranch

Explore the iconic red rocks of Sedona, awestruck by the majestic crimson rock formations. Spend the morning ambling through the various shops along the main road or opt for one of our jeep tours into the backcountry. Continue north along Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive, one of the Top 5 Most Scenic Drives in America, climbing 4,500 feet from Sedona to the top of the Mogollon Rim where the canyon opens to the foliage of oaks interspersed with evergreen pines, and the incredible backdrop of red-faced rocks and cliffs.

Arrive at the UNESCO-listed Grand Canyon National Park where you'll meet your Local Specialist, Canyon Tim, for an informative talk about the origins of the five-million-year-old canyon, its rock formations and impact now. (B) Stay: Grand Canyon Yavapai

Early risers, seize the morning on an optional helicopter flight over the heart of the Grand Canyon where incredible views of the south rim, north rim and Colorado River await. This morning, pack your bags and head to buzzy Las Vegas along Route 66, a symbol of the ultimate American road trip.

Stop by Seligman and Kingman, two iconic outposts for a taste of all things Americana, complete with classic motels, kitsch petrol pumps and steaming slices of Apple pie. As if by magic, spot the neon lights of Las Vegas looming in the distance; an entertainment oasis surrounded by dry desert with a reputation almost as big as the fortunes many have made (and lost) there. Choose to join a Sights and Lights Sightseeing Tour or rest up for another big day. (B/D) Stay: Horseshoe Las Vegas

Today is all about you. Spend it as you wish and perhaps join one of our many optional experiences in Sin City. Delve into an engineering marvel on the Hoover Dam Tour. View the dam from the newly completed Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, the largest concrete arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere standing 900 feet above the Colorado River and gaze in amazement at the largest dam of its time.

Or, visit The Mob Museum, officially the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, exploring the artefacts, stories and history of organized crime in the United States. Or, go back in time to experience the iconic stars and personalities that helped define the soul of Sin City at "Vegas! The Show". (B)

We leave Sin City behind as we head towards the mountains of Mammoth Lakes. To get there, we'll travel through the vast arid landscapes of the Mojave Desert. Keep your eyes peeled for photo ops as we journey through this otherworldly terrain. When we arrive in Mammoth Lakes, you'll have an evening at leisure to enjoy this outdoor adventure playground amidst the rolling peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. (B) Stay: Mammoth Mountain Inn

Descend from the Sierra Nevada Mountains through stunning Tioga Pass (seasonal) and enter UNESCO-listed Yosemite National Park. We journey through Yosemite Valley, admiring the natural wonders of Bridalveil Fall, Yosemite Falls, and El Capitan's imposing granite cliffs.

Spend the rest of the day learning about the natural history, flora, and fauna of one of the world's oldest national parks. Not just a great valley, but a shrine to human foresight, the strength of granite, the power of glaciers, the persistence of life, and the tranquility of the High Sierra. Yosemite National Park is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area and much more. (B) Stay: Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Oakhurst Yosemite

Today we leave California's Central Valley en route to Northern California. Join a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER ® Experience in Oakland for a Black Foodie Walking Tour where you'll learn about the rich culinary offerings and growing business scene of the Black community here. Then, it's off to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Embarcadero, and the infamous trolleys.

Continue your discovery of the local cuisine or dine on dim-sum joining an optional Chinatown Illuminations Tour in the evening. (B/L) Stay: Hilton Union Square

San Francisco is your playground today with several optional experiences to choose from. Get acquainted with the must-see sights of the city on a San Francisco Sightseeing Tour led by your Travel Director. Admire the eclectic mix of architecture (Victorian and Modern), culture and cuisines. Stroll through the lively hotspot of Fisherman's Wharf to Union Square, a historical landmark linked to the American Civil War, lined with interesting shops.

This afternoon, choose to join a walking tour across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge before making the short drive down to quaint seaside Sausalito for some free time before we take a ferry on the Bay back to San Francisco passing famous Alcatraz Island. (B)

Arrive in Monterey's Cannery Row, named in honour of John Steinbeck and his novel that described a colourful past. Now, Cannery Row's buildings are updated, shinier versions of turn-of-the-century canneries with eclectic shops, local artists' galleries, and restaurants. Stop for a Be My Guest lunch at Happy Girl Kitchen Co. where owners Todd and Jordan Champagne host a three-course vegetarian-based lunch highlighting locally sourced ingredients.

Then, learn about Jordan's fun and unconventional methods and secrets for making fruit preserves from the comfort of your home kitchen. You'll even get to take home a sample of preserves she makes onsite.

This afternoon, cruise the scenic 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove passing famous golf courses, mansions, and scenic attractions, including the Lone Cypress, Bird Rock and the 5,300-acre Del Monte Forest of Monterey Cypress trees. (B/L) Stay: Paso Robles Inn

The morning is yours to do as you please. We'll start with a visit the quaint seaside town of Morro Bay before exploring the rest of California's central coast. This evening, say goodbye to your fellow travellers and enjoy one final three-course dinner together. (B/D)

Kick off your final day in the American Riviera of Santa Barbara. Located on a pristine stretch of California's central coastline, Santa Barbara brings together the Golden State's Spanish influence, laid-back vibe, and upscale sensibility in a way few places can. You'll have some time to explore State Street, the Old Mission Santa Barbara, the Museum of Natural History, or the Museum of Art. You'll also have time to get lunch on your own today before we head to Los Angeles International Airport arriving at approximately 3:30 PM. (B)

Western Discoverer 3 , New Zealand, Sep 2019
I journeyed through California, Arizona and Nevada on the Trafalgar Western Discoverer tour along with my husband in Sept/Oct 2019. The tour was fast paced with not a lot of down time. But then it was an adventure rather than a holiday and we certainly saw many great sights and participated in fun activities. It was a good balance of spending time in read more the big busy cities, small towns in the wilderness as well as the various beach side places we stayed at.

My personal highlights were an evening stroll watching the sun go down over the Grand Canyon, walking the Golden Gate Bridge, jeep riding in Sedona while my husbands highlights were the helicopter ride through the Grand Canyon and setting foot on Pebble Beach Golf Course. The hotels were excellent although some were a little noisy. Our guide Randy was informative, very organised and helpful to those in need. There were long travel days on the bus during this tour but these were unavoidable as the towns and cities we stayed at were sometimes miles apart.
Fabulous West Coast tour 5 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2019
A great tour by Trafalgar, which did the loop, leaving Los Angeles down to San Diego then inland to Las Vegas, up to San Francisco and back to LA. Wonderful tour, the coach, accommodation, included excursions and optional excursions were excellent.

A large tour group of 50, from many different countries. Due to the distance of this trip, we had read more a couple of days where we just travelled in the coach, but this could not be helped. The tour director, Todd, was excellent and very informative about the history of each place we visited. Would be happy to go on another Trafalgar tour.
Wonderful Experience   4 , QLD, Australia, May 2018
We had an absolutely wonderful experience on this tour. It was well organised, the accommodation was good and our Tour Director was fantastic. Being a "Discoverer" tour the pace is quicker than some tours, but not so much that we felt rushed, or that we missed anything, and we did see and experience so many great places. We often had options to be as read more active or sedate as we wanted and the travel times were kept as comfortable as possible. We highly recommend this tour and Trafalgar. We plan to do more of their tours.
Country meets city the best of both worlds 10 , ACT, Australia, Aug 2017
This is a fantastic tour taking in the key sights throughout California. Highlights include the optional extra of flying over Grand Canyon, Old town San Diego, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, and Vagas. We stayed in 4.5 star hotels and dined in some fabulous restaurants. The bus was mostly comfortable with stops every 1.5 to 2 hours in small read more city towns or rest stops. The tour guide was knowledgeable and happy to accommodate special requests where needed.
Great time In Western USA   4 , NSW, Australia, May 2017
Stayed at some very nice hotels and were given lovely inclusions on the tour. Our tour guide and coach driver were excellent and gave us a smooth and worry free experience. The tour was at times fast paced, but we did have some distances to cover in certain areas. Highlights included Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and meeting some wonderful fellow travellers.
Western Discoverer 3 , WA, Australia, May 2017
Trafalgar was excellent to travel with, the accommodation was of a very good standard. Our tour director Todd was very knowledgeable & always available to assist with our queries. We got to visit some amazing places, the Grand Canyon being the WOW moment of the trip. Booking with Global Journeys was exceptional service. Michelle handled the booking read more very professionally. Overall a very positive experience with some awesome memories.
America is a wonderful country   5 , ACT, Australia, Sep 2016
Online booking was handled very efficiently and the travel documents were received in plenty of time. The coach was full which meant, as a solo traveller, I was seated next to a "new friend" who chose not to communicate; reason unknown. It is always enjoyable travelling in the USA, broad smooth highways, and lots of interesting sights to see. Of the read more optional excursions I did, most were OK, except the jeep tour in Sedona which was disappointing since it did not visit the advertised sites of Cathedral Rock or the Chapel of the Holy Cross. There wasn't much time at some destinations. For example, arriving late in the afternoon at Santa Barbara at a hotel some distance from the town centre, meant there was no time to explore. The Tour Leader did a very good job organising and explaining logistical arrangements, leaving times, dinner times, etc. The commentary given on the coach was cheerful but not very informative. I would have liked to hear more about the region we were in, the issues facing the population in the past and present, the Indian wars, etc, and American life in general.
USA Western Discoverer 1 , NSW , Australia, Aug 2016
Happy with the itinerary. Optional tours - highlights were Grand Canyon helicopter ride and Walk on the Golden Gate Bridge. Definitely worth taking these two extra optionals. Hotels were great, road trip to so many different landscapes just amazing. However, about the group photo it was simply poor photography! We were 54 fellow travellers in two long read more rows, so our faces are barely recognised. There was no date and place mentioned on the photo.
Great Trafalgar Tour 1 , NSW, Australia, May 2015
We had a wonderful trip, not only amazed by the nature's wonders, but also enjoyed colourful city culture and life. Accommodation and included meal were great. The tour director Jay and coach driver Gary are very professional. Many thanks for Yvonne helping us to book this great Trafalgar Tour. We will definitely to book another trip with Global Journeys and Trafalgar.
We have never seen such scenic splendor 3 , Australia, Sep 2014
We have never seen such scenic splendor. The tour was extremely comprehensive and enabled us to experience a range of panoramic locations and exciting cities. Thoroughly recommend both the tour and Global Journeys professionalism.
