Itinerary

Welcome to Switzerland, a land of snow-capped summits and romantic lakes that has attracted poets, musicians and travellers for centuries.

On arrival at Zürich airport, transfer to your hotel in Lucerne. Meet your Travel Director and travel companions for a pleasant dinner at a local restaurant. (D) Stay: Astoria Lucerne

Explore Mount Stanserhorn on a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, as an open-top cable car powered by solar panels takes you up the summit. Admire unrivalled views of the surrounding mountains and, on a clear day see as far as Alsace in France and the Black Forest in Germany. Walk along beautiful scenic pathways, keeping an eye out for marmots and other native animals, with the chance to hear a conservation talk by a Swiss ranger, to learn about local wildlife and flora.

Return to the beautiful 14th-century city of Lucerne to see its storybook wooden bridges, Baroque church and sorrowful Lion Monument. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at your leisure to walk along the lake or perhaps shop for a special timepiece or chocolate. (B)

In Bern, your Local Expert, a local English teacher, shows you the Cathedral of St. Vincent, Federal Palace and floral displays. Gather at the clock tower to watch the mechanical procession of painted figures before viewing the Ogre Fountain. Your travels continue into the wide, green valleys of the Vaud Alps with snowy summits filling the horizon. Continue through vineyards and alpine meadows to the fortified town of Gruyères, that gives its name to the well-known cheese. Enjoy time on your own to explore the pretty main street and 13th century castle.

From Montreux, travel along the shores of Lake Geneva to visit a winery. Admire the stunning panorama overlooking the lake and savour a tasting of tantalising, local wines. Delight in a delicious Farm-to-Table light dinner, made from locally sourced produce, and learn how the family that owns the farm is preserving the estate for future generations on this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. (B/D) Stay: Eden Palace Au Lac, Montreux

On the western bay of Lake Geneva, visit Chillon Castle for a special tour of the former home to the Dukes of Savoy, immortalised by Lord Byron's 'Prisoner of Chillon.' Country Roads of Switzerland-August 29th, 2023 3 , kuala lumpur, Malaysia, Aug 2023
We had a great time on this holiday trip. The pace was good and well organized. The scenic drive along the country roads is incredibly scenic with stunning views of the snowcapped Swiss Alps, romantic lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, vineyards, green pastures, old towns, and charming hillside villages. On the second day, we had truly a wonderful experience read more getting up to the summit of Mount Stanserhorn aboard an open top funicular cable car and the opportunity to take great photo shots of the wonderful mountain scenery. Among the stunningly snowcapped Swiss Alps, the iconic Matterhorn and the world famous Eiger Mountain offer spectacular views and lifetime experiences. Overall, this was a memorable holiday, complete with exciting train rides, cable cars, luxury cruise of Lake Geneva and spacious touring coach on our drive covering most of the major Swiss cities. We commenced our 14-day trip on 29/08 and had expected the weather to be cool and clear but sadly most of the days were hot and sunny.
Truly magical 2 , VIC, Australia, Aug 2023
I don't have the words to describe how wonderful this trip was every day brought a new highlight. Our tour guide (Matt) was every engaging and insightful. Only downside was it is VERY expensive more so than I expected but even that didn't spoil the experience nor beauty.
Excellent comprehensive tour of the beautiful sights of Switzerland 4 , WA, Australia, Aug 2019
The Country Roads of Switzerland Tour was very comprehensive and well-paced with plenty of 2-3 night stays and offering free time. We enjoyed the train journeys and all the spectacular sights of Switzerland and touching on the Italian lakes. Switzerland is very expensive, especially with the low value of the Australian Dollar and the cost of all the read more optional excursions made the tour quite expensive but all the excursions added to the experience.
Country Roads of Switzerland 3 , NSW, Australia, May 2019
Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Great bunch of Aussies, Americans and Malaysians. Our Insight tour director was amazing with a great cultural and knowledge base. Scenery was stunning and we were blessed with great weather. Be prepared for high cost of everything in Switzerland. Wonderful tour and all our trip was wonderful, organised by Hannah from Global journeys.
Spectacular Switzerland 2 , SA, Australia, May 2019
This was a very good tour of Switzerland. The pace was good, not too rushed and the tour guide Helen was excellent. The hotels were all very good and well positioned. All the places we stayed were interesting and the scenery was spectacular. One point to note though, Switzerland is quite expensive. Be prepared to pay about 50% more for food and drink read more than you would pay in Australia.

My only criticism of this tour would be the coach. There were a few seats which did not have the Insight Vacations signature Business Class legroom. I would suggest these few seats were barely Premium Economy so at 6 foot 2 inches I had a couple of slightly cramped days on the coach. I suspect they use a smaller coach on this tour due to the narrow and winding roads taken on the tour.

Otherwise Switzerland is a beautiful, safe and clean country, albeit a bit expensive.
Beyond Expectations 12 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2018
We were aware of Switzerland's reputation for its scenery but it is awesome! The country is easy travelling with relaxed starts and free time allowing us to absorb the beauty of this country of lakes and mountains. Travelling by both coach and train added another dimension of the engineering marvel of the Swiss railways. Although we had a full complement read more of 40 people the Tour Director Matt did a great job. Friendly, organised and professional, his communications, advice and directions on times and options were clear and concise. The result - 40 people on the coach, on time, every time the entire trip. A remarkable achievement.
Great trip through Switzerland 10 , NSW, Australia, Aug 2017
The scenery was amazing, just what you had seen on every postcard for Switzerland. Every where we went was splendid, green and clean and tranquil. Accommodation was excellent in quality and terrific in location.
A wonderful scenic trip in Switzerland and Italy! 10 , QLD, Australia, Aug 2017
August is a good month to travel in Switzerland. The weather was fine for most of the time although colder in the mountains. Maria Reisterer was an interesting and caring guide which, as a senior solo traveller, I really appreciated. The coach with our skilled driver was quite comfortable. I loved the itinerary with mostly two night stops in carefully read more chosen locations and three in Montreux. The scenery was magnificent with mountains, lakes and pretty picture postcard towns and villages. Thank you to Yvonne at Global Journeys for her help and organisation. Everything went smoothly as planned.
Trip of a lifetime 7 , VIC, Australia, May 2017
The tour content was perfect and exceeded our expectations, but the tour director was disappointing as he was ill-prepared and unfamiliar with several destinations. His poor organisation and vague instructions saw one family left behind on the excursion to Jungfrau and needing to find their own way back to the hotel. So, except for the choice of tour read more director, a perfect trip and a good case for leaving the payment of gratuities until the end of the tour.
