Itinerary

Welcome to Los Angeles! Your Tour Director is on hand late this afternoon to answer any questions.

Begin the day with a sightseeing tour of Tinseltown. Drive through Hollywood and see the world-famous TCL Chinese Theatre. An historic gem, this cinema (formerly, Grauman's) has hosted some of the most exclusive movie premieres in Hollywood history. See the Dolby Theatre, the first permanent home of the glamorous Academy Awards, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame where iconic terrazzo stars grace block after city block of Hollywood Boulevard. Explore The Original Farmers Market, with more than 80 shops and restaurants then head to the Santa Monica Pier and the ultimate Southern California beach.

The remainder of your day is at leisure; your Tour Director will have suggestions for further exploration of the city.

Journey to the desert oasis of Palm Springs. Ever since Hollywood stars first came here in the 1930's laying claim to ranch-style estates and holding up in elite hotels, the clean dry air and sunshine have made Palm Springs irresistible.

Travel through cacti-covered desert towards Old Town Scottsdale where Western storefronts create an aura of the past. Enjoy free time to explore a taste of the Old West with the Western bars, wooden beams, wagon wheels, and abundant cowboy hats, you will feel like you have traveled back in time to the era of outlaws and saloons.

First stop today is a visit to the red rocks of Sedona, a center for Southwestern and New Age arts. Climb through Oak Creek Canyon with its weather-sculpted formations of dramatic, color-tinted crags. Then pass by the San Francisco Mountains and beautiful pine forests to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and be awed by the grandeur and stunning vistas of this natural wonder of the world.

See the canyon from the sky aboard an optional helicopter flightseeing excursion for thrilling views of the canyon's flame-colored walls plunging 6,093 feet into the Colorado River. Stay overnight in Williams, a picturesque mountain town with Route 66 as the main street. (B)

Cross the Mojave, that still has traces of century-old ghost towns set in the natural beauty of the desert. Look out for Joshua trees, a species of the Agave family, that grow to 40 feet high and can live for more than 300 years. Arrive in the man-made oasis in the Nevada desert that is Las Vegas, a fantastic city of feverish gambling, neon lights, and entertaining shows. An orientation tour upon arrival shows off many of the themed casino resorts along the colorful “Strip.”

This evening, consider a night on the town with an optional Brazilian steakhouse dinner and find your inner Rat Pack at “Vegas! The Show,” to relive the iconic performances of Sinatra, Elvis, and more legends who made Las Vegas the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” (CB)

The day is free for exploring on your own. Perhaps try your hand at the blackjack table, check out some of the over-the-top hotel lobbies, or lounge by the pool. Your Tour Director will also have plenty of ideas and can recommend favorite restaurants and shopping areas.

Departing the neon lights of Las Vegas, we continue across the desert landscape of Nevada before crossing into California. See the vast Mojave Desert, which covers one-fifth of California. Pass through some of the state's most productive agricultural land and overnight in Selma in the central San Joaquin Valley.

This morning, we enter Yosemite National Park, a wonderland of giant granite domes, towering pinnacles, cascading waterfalls, and lush forests. See magnificent Half Dome, El Capitan, and Bridal Veil Falls. Afterward, drive to Sonora.

This morning, we continue west to the “City by the Bay” San Francisco, famous for its cable cars. After lunch, included sightseeing takes in the spectacular Golden Gate Bridge, Nob Hill, and bustling Fisherman's Wharf. (B)

The day is free for you to explore more of this fascinating city. Perhaps visit legendary Alcatraz Island, explore bustling Chinatown, or go on an iconic cable car ride. Take your adventures higher with an optional walk through the soaring 600-year-old redwoods of Muir Woods or view the stunning cityscape on a scenic San Francisco Bay Cruise.

Please Note: Consider advance ticket purchase for Alcatraz Island with the National Park Service.

This morning, travel south to picturesque Monterey, which was once Spain's Californian capital. Visit Monterey Harbor's historic Old Fisherman's Wharf to look for sea lions and otters, then visit Cannery Row, made famous by John Steinbeck's novel of the same name. Later, take in the spectacular Pacific Ocean waves from legendary 17-Mile Drive and the rugged Pacific coastline en route to Carmel Bay. Nestled in a pine forest beside the picturesque coastline, Carmel by the Sea is a storybook setting not to be missed.

Today, you will experience one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world—Big Sur. Experience stunning views, redwood forests, and the Pacific Ocean crashing below. Keep your camera handy, as there will be plenty of scenic photo stops. Visit Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and experience the deep shade and cathedral-like beauty of California Redwoods, and the dramatic mountains meeting the sea.

Enjoy time in San Luis Obispo before making your way to Solvang, where Denmark has been recreated with picturesque buildings and windmills. There's time to walk the flower-lined village streets and enjoy the “Old World” architecture. Tasty bakery treats and perhaps a Danish smorgasbord for dinner all add to the unique experience.(CB)

Please Note: The drive along the coast to Big Sur is dependent on current road conditions on Pacific Coast Highway 1.

From Solvang, it's a short drive south to coastal Santa Barbara. There's time to wander along the vibrant waterfront, visit the pier, or do some shopping in some of the most talked-about boutiques. Then head to Los Angeles International Airport for guests with outbound flights. Please schedule flights after 5 pm.

Golden West Adventure   6 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2019
Overall, I liked the tour and had a good time. Craig Cherry, the Tour Director was awesome, very knowledgeable of the places we visited, funny the entire trip and enjoyed his commentaries. Jayson was a great driver and got us to/from destinations safely. The accommodation was very good in some places and very average in others. I would have preferred read more to have more breakfasts as there were only 4 breakfasts included in this 15-day trip. The optional excursions were mostly good and sights were breathtakingly scenic! I would highly recommend this tour to all my friends and definitely interested in travelling with Cosmos again.
Wonderful tour through the Golden West of USA 4 , SA, Australia, Oct 2019
From the moment we contacted Global Journeys to the time we boarded our plane for the return trip to Australia everything was organised and hassle free. Our Travel Director (Craig) and our Coach Driver (Jason) were a mountain of information and assistance with some unexpected surprises thrown in. The majority of accommodation was as expected except read more for one or two of them were below par due to renovations happening. My only complaint is that breakfasts should be included as it was a tad annoying having to find a breakfast spot first thing in the morning though Craig did point us in the right direction.. The motel/hotels that did provide breakfast made for a more relaxed morning pack up and boarding of the coach of course the breakfast would bump up the cost but we were still paying for it on a daily basis. All in all it was a great tour with highlights every day.
Golden West Adventure 2 , NSW, Australia, Aug 2019
Enjoyed the trip. Very well organised. Both Tour director & coach driver were very experienced and responsible. Very happy with most of the hotels except for a strong smoke smell in the room at Las Vegas. Hotel changed me to another room the next day. Coach was very comfortable.
LA and beyond 7 , VIC, Australia, Jul 2019
This was by far the best trip we have taken with Cosmos. The tour was well planned, the tour leader (Judi) was brilliant giving us all heaps of info, telling us the quickest away to get to places etc. The driver was the best, never stressing in the heavy traffic and even got off to remind a car that he was in the bus lane.
Fantastic holiday 4 , NSW, Australia, May 2019
Whole experience of this holiday was fantastic. From the initial booking to the Tour Guide (Linda), our coach driver (Jason), our adventures along the way... Great vacation.
Trip of a lifetime 7 , VIC, Australia, Oct 2017
This was my second Cosmos tour and I have to say it was another great tour. I met two lovely ladies on the UK tour I did last year and they became my travel buddies for this trip. We saw some amazing places - some favourites were the Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park & Las Vegas. The tour was for 16 days which I think was long enough, having 3 read more days in Vegas & San Fran was great.

Our Driver Craig was very quiet but a nice guy and our tour guide Craig Cherry was great, very knowledgeable and helpful. We had a coach of 25 people and everyone of us were Australian, came away with some more friends to keep in touch with.

The only downside was that we travelled as a triple and were told beforehand that in the room we would either get a rollaway bed or a pull out couch for the 3rd bed, that didn't happen. Apart from that the majority of the accommodation was great. A couple of places were a bit dodgy but they were just overnight stops (get in late/leave early) and we had a couple of hotels where we had Wi-Fi issues and that was a problem for me in San Francisco as I had work stuff I needed to sort out.
The 16 Day Golden West of USA was an excellent holiday/experience/education   6 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2017
The Excellent Bits:
1. Our tour director, Ken Hartford, was very experienced, knowledgeable, passionate about California, prepared, organised, entertaining and could second-guess just about everyone's needs. Jason, our driver, was skilful, courteous and careful.
2. Wi-Fi on the coach.
3. The 3 night stays in Las Vegas and San Francisco gave read more us a chance to get a feel for the places as well as a break from living out of a suitcase.
4. The Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park.
5. The included tour of Alcatraz.

The Good Bits:
1. 5 included breakfasts at some of the overnight stops.
2. Monterey Aquarium (optional)
3. 17 mile Drive/Pebble Beach

Overall:
This tour exceeded our expectations in almost ALL areas. In our opinion it was a 4-star tour at a 3-star price. Thank you Cosmos and Hannah at Global Journeys.
A very well organised trip with a great variety of included excursions.   2 , New Zealand, Sep 2017
Our tour guide, John was extremely knowledgeable of the areas we traveled and often had lots of extra info and stories as we were driving along. This is an easy & safe way to see places that would be too tiring to do as a road trip for a couple, so was made very relaxing by coach trip. Only downside was a few very long days and a couple of very early read more starts.

Some of the overnight stops were a bit remote with not a great selection of restaurants around but most of the hotels were very comfortable and nicely appointed. Harrahs in Las Vegas is under renovations and has been for a long time and I think Cosmos needs to have either an alternative hotel or make sure its guests are accommodated in the already renovated floors and rooms as there was a lot of noise & dust during the day but in saying that we weren't in our room during work hours.
Cosmos Western Treasures 15 day Tour 5 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2017
Just arrived back from a fabulous 15 day tours of Western USA. We were very impressed with the whole process from booking the tour to completion. The booking process on Global Journeys website was easy. The Tour Director was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful - nothing was too much trouble for him. The Bus Driver was friendly, very experienced read more and handled the busy roads without any problems. The highlights were our helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon, El Capitan and Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite National Park, Las Vegas, the differences in the landscape of California, Arizona and Nevada and the magnificent clear photos we were able to take of San Francisco from Twin Peaks.
