Itinerary

Welcome to Los Angeles! Your Tour Director is on hand late this afternoon to answer any questions.

Begin the day with a sightseeing tour of Tinseltown. Drive through Hollywood and see the world-famous TCL Chinese Theatre. An historic gem, this cinema (formerly, Grauman's) has hosted some of the most exclusive movie premieres in Hollywood history. See the Dolby Theater, the first permanent home of the glamorous Academy Awards, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame where iconic terrazzo stars grace block after city block of Hollywood Boulevard. Explore The Original Farmers Market, with more than 80 shops and restaurants then head to the Santa Monica Pier and the ultimate Southern California beach.

The remainder of your day is at leisure; your Tour Director will have suggestions for further exploration of the city.

Journey to the desert oasis of Palm Springs. Ever since Hollywood stars first came here in the 1930s, laying claim to ranch-style estates and holding up in elite hotels, the clean, dry air and sunshine have made Palm Springs irresistible.

Travel through cacti-covered desert toward Old Town Scottsdale, where Western storefronts create an aura of the past. Afterward, enjoy free time to explore a taste of the Old West with Western bars, wooden beams, wagon wheels, and abundant cowboy hats, you'll feel like you've traveled back in time to the era of outlaws and saloons.

First stop today is a visit to the red rocks of Sedona, a center for Southwestern and New Age arts. Climb through Oak Creek Canyon with its weather-sculpted formations of dramatic, color-tinted crags. Then pass by the San Francisco Mountains and beautiful pine forests to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and be awed by the grandeur and stunning vistas of this natural wonder of the world. See the canyon from the sky aboard an optional helicopter flightseeing excursion for thrilling views of the canyon's flame-colored walls plunging 6,093 feet into the Colorado River.

Stay overnight in Williams, a picturesque mountain town with Route 66 as its main street. (B)

Cross the old Mojave, that still has traces of century-old ghost towns set in the natural beauty of the desert. Look out for Joshua trees, a species of the agave family that grows to 40 feet high and can live for more than 300 years. Arrive in the man-made oasis in the Nevada desert that is Las Vegas, a fantastic city of feverish gambling, neon lights, and entertaining shows. An orientation tour upon arrival shows off many of the themed casino resorts along the colorful “Strip.”

This evening, consider a night on the town with an optional Brazilian steakhouse dinner and find your inner Rat Pack at “Vegas! The Show,” to relive the iconic performances of Sinatra, Elvis, and more legends who made Las Vegas the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” (CB)

The day is free for exploring on your own. Perhaps try your hand at the blackjack table, check out some of the over-the-top hotel lobbies, or lounge by the pool. Your Tour Director will also have plenty of activities to choose from and will recommend favorite restaurants and shopping areas.

Departing the neon lights of Las Vegas, we continue across the desert landscape of Nevada before crossing into California. See the vast Mojave Desert, which covers one-fifth of California. Pass through some of the state's most productive agricultural land and overnight in Selma in the central San Joaquin Valley.

This morning, we enter Yosemite National Park, a wonderland of spectacular lakes, giant granite domes, towering pinnacles, cascading waterfalls, and lush forests. See magnificent Half Dome, El Capitan, and Bridal Veil Falls. Afterward, drive to Sonora.

This morning, we continue west to the “City by the Bay” San Francisco, famous for its cable cars. After lunch, included sightseeing takes in the spectacular Golden Gate Bridge, Nob Hill, and bustling Fisherman's Wharf. (B)

The day is free for you to explore more of this fascinating city. Perhaps visit legendary Alcatraz Island, explore bustling Chinatown, or go on an iconic cable car ride. Take your adventures higher with an optional walk through the soaring 600-year-old redwoods of Muir Woods or view the stunning cityscape on a scenic San Francisco Bay Cruise.

Please Note: Consider advance ticket purchase for Alcatraz Island with the National Park Service.

Your vacation ends this morning. You may choose to extend your vacation with extra nights and explore San Francisco further.

Wonders of the West! 1 , VIC, Australia, Jun 2024
The 12 day tour was wonderful and the best way to see the highlights of the Southwest in a short space of time. Thoroughly enjoyed The Grand Canyon and Yosemite. We would definitely recommend travelling with Cosmos and booking with Global Journeys.
Excellent North America Tour   1 , NSW, Australia, Aug 2023
Was an exceptional tour to see the most in a short amount of time. As a solo traveller from Australia to never have been to the USA yet was a real adventure and dream come true. The tour guide was average though, very basic and had been in his job for far too long, had lost the spark of travel I think. The hotels were amazing and superiorly comfortable read more no issues there. There was a lot of free time so it was up to yourself to get how much out of the trip you wanted. So if you planned and looked into things you wanted to do in the town you were in or travelling to, a day or two ahead then it was epic. However, if you weren't on the ball and waiting for someone to tell you what to do all the time you would have missed out.

Initiative and planning went a long way in this trip. I think at the very start of the trip a group dinner and meet and greet should have been formally arranged at an appropriate time to break the ice and get to know everyone as I found we were meeting people and getting to know people much further into the trip when it definitely should have been arranged from the start as there were so many nice people in the tour that had we been properly introduced from the start we would have done things together on the trip in our free time as we had common interests. Either way this trip is worth doing if you want to see many highlights in North America in only two weeks.
Great tour all round 4 , WA, Australia, May 2019
Had an absolutely wonderful time on this tour from booking to the end of the tour every detail was looked after. Saw wonderful sights, attended great optional tours, stayed great hotels. My tour director Judy was the best I've had, nothing was too much for her to do. Our driver was experienced interactive. Great tour all round, recommend for sure.
Amazing snapshot of the American Southwest   3 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2018
This 12 day tour was a fantastic way to see the highlights of the southwest in a short space of time. Grand Canyon was a personal highlight for me. Unfortunately due to wildfires we couldn’t go to Yosemite but went to Sequoia National Park instead. Our tour guide, Craig was fantastic! He was knowledgeable of all our stops and kept us entertained the whole trip!
Western Wonders 2 , NSW, Australia, Apr 2018
A very enjoyable trip and appreciated the assistance from Jemma of Global Journeys. Highly recommend their services. Randy was our tour guide for the whole journey and his services were marvellous. He is an experienced, knowledgeable and attention to details type of person. This is the first time we engaged on a Cosmos tour and certainly won’t be the last.
A taste of the National Parks and cities in the West. 5 , SA, Australia, Aug 2017
Yosemite and Grand Canyon were the highlight of the tour for us, having previously enjoyed the Trans America NY to LA tour and the Bryce Canyon, Zion, South side of Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. The hotels were good and the pace of the tour perfect. Our Tour Director was excellent. He was passionate about nature and shared his knowledge at every opportunity. read more The bus was very comfortable and our driver was excellent. They were a great team, always cheerful, friendly and willing to oblige.
Great insight to the West Coast ofUSA 3 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2017
Excellent Cosmos tour of the West Coast of USA. The tour exceeded my expectations, we visited some great cities and we enjoyed exceptional sight seeing opportunities and experiences. Would strongly recommend travelling with Cosmos and booking through Global Journeys.
Worry free 4 , QLD, Australia, Apr 2017
We always book online and have found our trips run very well. Flights and tours go together without problems. Tour itself run perfectly with Ken Hartman at the helm. Perfect time to travel as weather was good and the snow was still melting in places.
12 Day Western Wonders Cosmos 3 , VIC, Australia, Oct 2016
We really enjoyed the natural wonders we visited on this Tour. The Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Muir Woods were an experience not to be missed. Of the cities, San Francisco was the standout.
Interesting look at California and the desert.   4 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2016
The highlight for us was San Francisco and the Grand Canyon. Our coach driver Dave was fantastic and couldn't do enough for us. Our lack of commentary was the downside, because we got to learn very little about the areas we travelled through.
