Touring in Africa
Top Tips for Africa!
Tipping – Tipping etiquette will vary from country to country throughout Africa, however, generally tipping will be appreciated. Check if gratuities and porterage have already been included in your tour or ask your local guide if you are unsure what is appropriate. Power plugs – The socket configurations and voltages vary throughout the continent of Africa. Check what style of adapter is required for the countries you will be visiting. Consider a universal adapter and current converter for your appliances. Currency – Each country in Africa as its own currency. Check with your bank for the options available to you (and fees involved) for accessing your funds overseas. Advised your bank of your travel plans to avoid having your transactions blocked while you are away.
What should I bring?
Toiletries and accessories – Pack your personal items, including some anti-bacterial wipes and tissues for your trip. Not all toilets will have toilet paper or running water, so it is handy to have some toiletries with you. Include some bug spray, lip balm and sunscreen for your trip as well as a hat for protection. Comfortable shoes – Pack comfortable protective footwear for your trip to Africa. Depending on the countries and climates you will be visiting, consider adding a waterproof layer to your shoes before leaving home. For a second pair, consider some sturdy sandals which will still offer comfort for a day of sightseeing. Daypack – Whether you are exploring the laneways of Africa's vibrant cities and towns, or searching for the Big Five on the savannahs, a lightweight waterproof pack will come in handy. Choose a bag that zips up completely to keep your possessions safe, and with enough room for your toiletries, extra layers, essentials – and camera!
Don't miss these authentic experiences on tour!
Spot the wildlife – Depending on where and when you visit, you will get to witness different migrations and species of wildlife. Get up close and personal with the Gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda, spot the Big Five on the plains of South Africa, or float past hippos on the waterways of the Okavango Delta. Experience the culture – Africa is a patchwork of different cultures, with threads of different tribal philosophies and traditions weaving their way throughout the continent. Your local guide will bridge social and linguistic barriers to showcase the customs of the diverse nations you visit and bring to life both the modern traditions and those of their ancestors. Explore the landscapes – Nothing can quite compare to the vast landscapes of Africa. The contrast of the lush deltas, the sparse deserts, the open savannahs, and the diverse vegetation spread through the forests and woodlands is something to be treasured. Keep your camera handy to capture these scenes as you won't believe them with your own eyes.
