Itinerary

Welcome to New England! Your Tour Director is on hand from 3-6:00 p.m. to answer any questions.

Head north into Maine, famous for its beautiful coastal region, its legendary lighthouses and lobster industry. Stop in the historic maritime city of Portland and enjoy an included city sightseeing tour. See the famous Old Port waterfront with its cobblestone streets lined with working fishing wharves and converted warehouses with restaurants and shops. Continue northeast via Bangor, to Bar Harbor, a popular seaside resort and gateway to Acadia National Park. (CB)

Bar Harbor is situated on Mount Desert Island, home of ruggedly beautiful Acadia National Park. Drive through woodlands, past beaver lodges, rocky beaches, and rounded mountains to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, enjoying panoramic views along the way. At 1,530 feet, Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the East Coast and one of the first to see the sunrise.

Your afternoon is free to explore the quaint village of Bar Harbor on your own. Perhaps walk the Shore Path, or visit the shops, galleries, and boutiques that line the streets. Your Tour Director will have suggestions for sightseeing and dining. (CB)

Explore the roads less traveled of inland Maine, past pristine farmland with stone walls that mark centuries-old farms, blueberry barrens, peacefully still lakes, and forests noted for their vivid colors during the autumn. Stop to enjoy the small-town hospitality in Farmington, settled by veterans of the American Revolution. Overnight in North Conway. (CB)

Today, you are greeted with picture postcard views of New Hampshire's charming rivers as you drive along Kancamagus Scenic Byway, renowned for its fall leaf viewing. The “Kanc,” as the locals call it, remains unspoiled by homes or service stations for its entire length. A drive through White Mountain National Forest brings you to the spectacular mountain pass, Franconia Notch. Continue on and visit an eighth-generation sugarhouse and learn about traditional maple sugaring before ending the day in Montpelier, the capital city of Vermont. (B)

This morning visit Woodstock, its village green reminiscent of 19th-century England. Then explore Vermont's rural heritage at Billings Farm & Museum, a living museum and working dairy farm, home to a famous herd of dairy cows. Travel to Quechee Gorge State Park, Vermont's little Grand Canyon, and marvel at the views. Then return to simpler times with a visit to the charming Vermont Country Store in Rockingham. End today with an overnight in North Adams, a town nestled in the beautiful Berkshires. (B)

Drive across Massachusetts today to Plymouth, the first landing place of the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620 and see Plymouth Rock. Then cross the Cape Cod Canal, the widest sea-level canal in the world, on your way to the town of Hyannis, on the Cape Cod peninsula. Hyannis is known internationally as the “All-American City” and where you will find the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, award-winning restaurants, and quaint storefronts.

Today, drive the arm of the Cape, to the old whaling port of Provincetown. This eclectic seaside town is a tiny haven often referred to as “Land's End.” Stroll MacMillan Pier with its fishing boats and craft shacks, browse the colorful shops of Commercial Street, or dig into a lobster roll, a delicious Portuguese pastry, or some tasty fried clams. There's also time to kick up your wheels on an optional Sand Dune tour in National Seashore Park. Return to Hyannis, where the remainder of your day and evening are free for independent activities.

Depart this morning for Boston. Upon arrival, your guided tour focuses on the city's most prominent landmarks. See the historic sights of the Freedom Trail like Boston Common, the Old State House, the Old North Church where two lanterns were hung on the night of Paul Revere's famous ride, and Faneuil Hall. Fall foliage on the Classic New England Tour 6 , QLD, Australia, Oct 2019
In mid-October we saw the Fall foliage in all its glory. The national parks of Acadia and White Mountains were highlights but the roads generally were lined by swathes of red, yellow, brown, pink - wonderful. The Globus tour guide, Nancy was excellent with lots of stories and history and she handled any tricky moments with tact and kindness. Our driver read more Jeff was also superb and willing to go the extra distance to ensure everybody was catered for. The hotels were all of good standard. Perhaps the first one, Comfort Inn in Boston, was basic and in an unattractive area but it was OK for overnight.

If the foliage is not in place, and unless you are interested in hunting or fishing, I would not recommend these states as a travel destination. Bar Harbour, where we spent two nights, was very interesting but other towns like Bangor, Smithfield and Battleboro do not seem to have much for the tourist. Newport in Rhode Island was well worth the visit. The tour finished in Boston where the traffic seems to be in semi-permanent gridlock. A 1 1/2 hour city tour in the bus was not satisfactory. A step-on guide talked on but it was difficult to see out of the bus - one needs an open-top bus for such a tour. I would prefer to have this activity deleted and finish earlier.
Breathtaking Fall Foliage in New England 4 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2019
Travelled on 1st October 2019 with Cosmos Classic New England Tour. Perfect timing as foliage was at its peak, it was even more spectacular than I imagined. I loved the small towns, their hospitality and shopping. It was even better because of the Pumpkins and Halloween decorations which were everywhere. This was the 4th Cosmos Tour I have taken but read more unfortunately the Tour Director on this Tour, Penny Harrington, had no idea how to do her job, had no organisation skills and obviously had no real experience and most travellers were very disappointed with her management of the tour. We still had a great time.
Extraordinary Experience 3 , QLD, Australia, Oct 2016
We had done 3 previous tours with Cosmos and thought we had seen the best of their offerings. We experienced an absolutely fabulous New England Traditions Tour in October 2016 - in fact we would call it positively life changing
Many, many thanks to Hannah at Global Journeys who arranged our tour including extensions and to Doris an absolutely professional read more and competent Tour Director on tour 8100 and to Bruce - the calm, efficient, safe and professional Driver on our road trip. Thank you Cosmos & Global Journeys - we'll be back!
Craving for next tour in North America   10 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2016
It is a wonderful trip visiting new England this Oct and experiencing the beautiful autumn and of course a best season in North America. The whole journey has been arranged with a good physical pace and enough free time to explore the places on our own. My excitement is a few hidden gems on the way. e.g. unforgettable landscape in Newport and fall foliage read more in New Hampshire. I suggest that we could have spend one more night in Boston, where there are lots of historical spots to visit. My overall impression in the accommodation is good, except for the tiny room in New York. I would say a big thanks to my tour guide and coach driver, whose useful suggestions perfected my journey.

It's been such a pleasure to book my 4th overseas tour with Cosmos and this is also my 3rd connection with Global Journeys. And I highly recommend the tours with them. Attached photo was taken in Mirror Lake, located in Lake Placid. It's one of the highlights in my tour.
Excellent tour guide 2 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2015
We had an excellent tour guide for our New England Fall experience. John was so informative and new all about the history of the six New England States having resided in Boston. We found this tour very leisurely with plenty of time to wander around the villages. It was also great that the coach could go off the highways and go through the small towns. read more Also Barry our coach driver was very efficient and courteous. We could not fault the lovely hotels we stayed in fantastic beds!! We will certainly be taking another Cosmos tour in the future to the west coast of USA again.
Exactly what I was hoping for 2 , Australia, Sep 2014
Thank you Hannah, for all your help and patience. This tour was exactly what I was hoping for, everything was organised perfectly, and nothing was too much trouble. Our tour director and coach driver were great. Will definitely recommend Global Journeys and Hannah.
