Overview

Read 4 reviews and enjoy exclusive savings on Albatross 11 Day Christmas in an Italian Castle. Imagine celebrating this Christmas in a glorious 2000-year-old Italian Castle set in the charming foothills of the Italian Dolomites. Add visits to the picturesque Austrian Lakes District, the Christmas Markets of Salzburg and Innsbruck, the chic ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo and the romantic city of Venice.

Itinerary

Your tour commences this evening in cosmopolitan Munich. Shopping is always excellent in Munich – particularly around the town hall and the decorated wooden Christmas Market stalls - which if you have time prior to the tour commencing, we recommend you visit! Before your Bavarian-style buffet dinner, enjoy a welcome drink in the hotel. (D) Stay: Maritim Hotel Munich, Germany

A leisurely start as we cross into Austria to spend lunchtime in Mondsee on Lake Mondsee, and visit the church made famous in the wedding scene of the film ‘The Sound of Music’.

Later we drive deep into the lakes district and visit Hallstatt. Set on a rocky terrace jutting into the quiet dark water of the lake surrounded by towering peaks, this is considered the oldest inhabited village in Europe and perhaps the most beautiful in Austria.

Afterwards, passing Wolfgangsee (lake), we soon reach Fuschl - the tiny country village on Lake Fuschl. Only 30 minutes from Salzburg this is our home for the next two nights.

This evening join in a torchlight village walk followed by mulled wine. (B/D) Stay: Hotel Jakob, Fuschl am See

Today includes a full day excursion to Salzburg. Our first stop is at the nearby village of Oberndorf where we visit the famous ‘Silent Night’ Chapel on the site where the Christmas carol was first performed. We then continue on to Salzburg – the baroque city of Mozart sitting beneath its enormous Festung (Fortress). A walking city tour with an expert local guide will introduce you to this enchanting city, including several locations used in the film ‘The Sound of Music’.

As a finale you will gather amongst the fir trees in the small stone courtyard of the St Peter’s Keller, dating back to the 1500’s and Salzburg’s oldest restaurant, for a hot drink and biscuits. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the city. Maybe take time to visit the huge castle for a fascinating view or savour the atmosphere of the famous Salzburg Christmas Markets. (B/D) Stay: Hotel Jakob, Fuschl am See

This morning we follow the spectacular Inn Valley through the Tyrol to Wattens to visit Swarovski ‘Kristallwelten’ (Crystal Worlds)... a weird and wonderful crystal experience. We continue the short distance to the winter resort of Innsbruck. After checking into our centrally located hotel you will have plenty of time to explore the Old Town on your doorstep. Make sure you enjoy the picture perfect Christmas Markets in the old medieval square beneath the famous ‘Golden Roof’. (B/D) Stay: Hotel Grauer Bär, Innsbruck

Driving up over the beautiful Fern Pass we enter Southern Bavaria and visit the tiny village of Hohenschwangau.

After a brisk walk uphill you enjoy a guided tour of one of the most inspiring and famous castles in the world – ‘Mad’ King Ludwig’s romantic Neuschwanstein Castle. The staterooms, halls and throne room are all reminiscent of a Wagner operatic saga.

In the afternoon we also visit the ‘Passion Play’ village of Oberammergau, with its ornately painted buildings and stop at Kloster Ettal Monastery with its incredible painted ceilings. Dating back over 700 years this is one of the finest examples of Rococo architecture in existence. Your evening is at leisure. (B) Stay: Hotel Grauer Bär, Innsbruck

Today we cross into Italy via the Brenner Pass and visit Bolzano, capital of Alto Adige region. Intricately carved gables, painted timber façades and an elegant arcaded main street illustrate the influence of both Tyrolean and Italian cultures.

We have included a visit to the Museum of Archaeology where you can see the mummified remains of Ötzi – the famous Ice Man – along with a fascinating exhibition documenting the Ancient History of Italy’s South Tyrol. At Trento we cut across the scenic Valsugana and reach the foothills of the Dolomites and our superb CastelBrando. Located above the village of Cison di Valmarino this 2,000 year old Roman fortress was turned into a sumptuous Noble’s palace in the 13th century.

On arrival we have included a guided tour of the castle – there is a lot to see – and this will be your home for the next four evocative nights. (B/D) Stay: Hotel CastelBrando, Cison di Valmarino

Christmas Eve! Today we visit nearby Venice – arguably one of the most romantic cities in the world. At Tronchetto we board a boat to take us to St Mark’s Square where we join our expert local guide for a walking tour and to visit the pink and white marble Doges Palace. The rest of the day is free to shop and explore the myriad of narrow, water lined streets and canals spanned by humped back bridges.

Tonight we enjoy Christmas Eve with dinner back in ‘our’ castle. (B/D) Stay: Hotel CastelBrando, Cison di Valmarino

Christmas Day as it should be…in a wonderful location - relaxing, eating and drinking. A day to savour the delights of your castle. Maybe take the hotel funicular to the village below, have a ‘winter walk’ or warm yourself on one of the castle’s sun terraces. Highlight of your day will be the exceptional 5 course Christmas lunch accompanied by a welcome cocktail and a selection of local wines. A Christmas to remember! (B/L/D) Stay: Hotel CastelBrando, Cison di Valmarino

Boxing Day! Time to have some fun in the snow as we drive north into the spectacular Dolomites to visit the chic Italian ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo. ‘My Time’ to shop and enjoy the breath-taking scenery of the dramatic, snow laden peaks surrounding you, or perhaps take the cable car (not included) up the mountain. (B/D) Stay: Hotel CastelBrando, Cison di Valmarino

Leaving our castle we head for the shores of Lake Garda where we take a morning break in the incredibly picturesque town of Sirmione with its tiny harbour surrounded by cobblestoned walkways and cafés.

Later we continue to the stylish city of Milan for time at leisure before enjoying a farewell dinner in a local restaurant. (B/D) Stay: Starhotels Anderson, Milano

Your Christmas tour ends this morning in Milan. (B)

No white christmas, but had a great time 3 , SA , Australia, Dec 2015
I would recommend Global Journeys to anyone wishing to book a holiday. Everything went off with out a hitch and we had a great time. The Albatross trip was great because we spent very little money as everything was mostly included and all the people we travelled with were great. The food and the wine included were terrific although I put on 3 kilos!. read more I would travel with them again, its a pity they dont have more of a variety of places they go.
Excellent, well thought out tour format 1 , QLD, Australia, Dec 2014
Excellent, well thought out tour format. Plenty of time to enjoy destinations. Great accommodation and included meals. Highly recommended for anyone who doesn't want to stress or worry about what to do next, where to go next or where to find great food whilst on holidays!
No hesitation recommending Global Journeys and Albatross 9 , Australia, Dec 2012
We booked the tour with a little trepidation because we heard about tours that had oversized & grumbling tour groups, ordinary & poorly located hotels, overbearing tour guides, bland food and so on. However, our fears were totally unfounded on Albatross's 'Christmas in an Italian Castle' tour. All hotels were well located in city centres and were of read more good 4 star type quality. We will especially remember the family friendliness of the staff of Mohrenwirt at Fuschl and the historic elegance of the palace of Castelbrando. The food was fantastic, almost always good, plentiful examples of local fare, with the several course Italian Christmas dinner at Castelbrando a standout. Not everyone on our group liked everything put before us (although we did!), but all were willing to have a go, as sampling local food is part of the adventure. Surprisingly (and happily), wine was amply included at several of the dinners. The places we visited in this tour were all stunning and it is hard to pick one as a highlight. However, one special place worth mentioning is the historic little town of Hallstatt, on the side of a hill next to a lake. It's quiet beauty and charm is straight off a biscuit tin lid!

The tour was generally well paced with a good mixture of guided tours and opportunities to 'do your own thing' and wander through historic townships on your own. Our only complaint was that we would have liked to have spent more time at some of the sites such as Bolzano and Sirmoine rather than move on and shortly after have lengthy meal/comfort stops at service stations. Best of all was the charming, eloquent, informative, helpful and patient tour guide, Gilberto, who led our group. Gilberto's knowledge, enthusiasm and informative anecdotes about the places we passed by or visited really added to the value of the experience. He is an outstanding asset to Albatross's organisation and, if their other guides are as half as good, they are well ahead of the pack. We can't finish without mentioning Marco, our tour coach driver, every inch a charming Italian gentleman himself. His skillful driving along snow covered, winding roads was reassuring and something to admire. We will have no hesitation in recommending Global Journeys and Albatross. Our consultant, Frances, was fantastic and helped organise our trip professionally and without fuss.
Well organised, good value for money, great itinerary 5 , Australia, Dec 2012
We had a fab time and were very happy with Albatross and believe that the 'Christmas in an Italian Castle' was very well organised, good value for money, great itinerary, not too rushed and it was great having at least 2 nights or more in most places. We met some great people on the tour with us with a good mixture of ages. The tour leader Deryk Brown read more was very helpful, pleasant and a wealth of information having been in that job for many years. One family on our tour were onto their 5th Albatross tour which speaks for itself. The highlight was a visit to Hallstatt, the oldest known village in Europe and as they say possibly the most beautiful in Austria. I was happy to be able to ski fresh powder in Italy and the Castle for the four days over Christmas was stunning to say the least. We were very happy with your service, particularly as I was a bit stressed about Glenns back in mid 2012 and worried about if we should/would be able to go. I will recommend Global Journeys to family and friends, and yes please upsell this particular tour when you can.
