Welcome to Munich, capital of Bavaria! Meet your fellow travellers and tour director this evening for a welcome cocktail.

On our morning walking tour we admire some of Munich's iconic attractions, including the Frauenkirche church and Marienplatz, the busy town square. We explore Munich's famous Viktualienmarkt, an original farmers market which has developed into a gourmet and culinary paradise. The afternoon is free to relax or explore at your own pace before a typical Bavarian welcome dinner this evening. (B/D)

A stunning day trip into the hills of Bavaria lies ahead. The imposing Neuschwanstein Castle, also Walt Disney's inspiration for the Magic Kingdom, perches high above the quaint village of Hohenschwangau. We'll visit the castle this morning, along with the beautiful palace of Schloss Linderhof and the charming town of Oberammergau, famous for the 'Passion Play' that takes place there once every 10 years. (B)

Munich - Salzburg

Enjoy the beautiful alpine scenery as we make our way into Austria. Before arriving in Salzburg, we visit the infamous Eagle's Nest. A unique engineering feat, the structure was built as a teahouse for Adolf Hitler atop Kehlstein Mountain at an elevation of 1,843m. This afternoon we'll see the sights made famous by 'The Sound of Music'. (B)

This morning we visit the Hallein Salt Mine in the Dürrnberg plateau. In operation for more than 2,500 years, the salt from the mine provided for and brought wealth to the locals, and built the beautiful city of Salzburg, ensuring it would become a powerful trading community. The afternoon is at leisure. (B)

Salzburg - Vienna

Our sightseeing in Vienna begins with the impressive baroque Imperial Palace complex of Schönbrunn. We'll stroll through the 18th century gardens and wonder at the sheer opulence of the rooms of the Residential Palace. We will also see Belvedere Palace, Hofburg Palace and St Stephen's Cathedral.Special Experience: We visit the famous Naschmarkt. Be tempted by the smells and maybe try the local specialties - Palatschinken or Kaiserschmarrn!Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. (B)

Spend the day at leisure to enjoy this glorious city at your own pace. (B)

Lake Bled

The region around Bled is one of the most beautiful in Europe, set amongst stunning mountain peaks and brimming with forests and greenery, waterfalls and streams. Here we enjoy a wonderful sightseeing tour including a visit to Bled Castle, before we visit the lake valley of Bohinj. (B)

Lake Bled - Dolomites

The Dolomites, in the northern Italian Alps, offer some of the most interesting mountain landscapes in the world. Along the way we'll stop at the Cibiana murals, where artists have painted the village's history on the buildings. “Spectacular Highs of all Kinds”

I think the spectacular and breathtaking scenery through Bavaria, Austria, beautiful Slovenia (which I had previously known little about) the Dolomites in Italy then the Swiss Alps, was really the key to my enjoyment of this tour. Our Slovenian guide Ales, was a mine of information and passionate about his subject and he looked after the fifteen of us really really well. Being a small group we were more like a family;this was fun and reassuring for those of us who were sole travellers. The summer weather was fantastic, our drivers were skilled and really, I couldn't recommend this tour highly enough. A couple of hotels might be changed(we were the first group to do this tour) and I won't be eating sauerkraut again for at least a year(!) but these are minor details. An extra day in Interlaken would be good. A Mozart concert is Vienna could be an option;I would have preferred that to the Sound of Music tour, but that is only a personal thing. I will never forget the thrill of being up The Matterhorn.
