Itinerary
Welcome to Shanghai, China's largest city and centreof trade. Hotel rooms are available for a midafternoon check - in.
Sightseeing today includes a stroll through the Old Town and the beautiful Yu Yuan Gardens, a place of peace and tranquility in this bustling city. Visit the Shanghai Museum, where superb antiquities and fine arts dating back 6,000 years are on display. Walk along the famous Bund with its colonial architecture, and explore the restored Xintiandi area with its unique 1920s - style Shikumen buildings. You will also visit a silk factory to learn about the silk - making process. Tonight, join your travelling companions for dinner at your hotel. (B/L/D)
Explore Shanghai at leisure. You may opt to join an optional excursion to the historic water town of Wuzhen, renowned for its Old World charm and picturesque setting. (B)
Today, fly to Xi'an, the former ancient capital. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. (B)
One of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world when China dominated the silk trade, Xi'an today is an archaeological treasure trove. Sightseeing begins with the enormous tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, accidentally discovered by local farmers in 1974. Marvel at the legion of Terracotta Warriors that has been guarding the burial site for 2,000 years. Later, walk along the ancient city wall of Xi'an. The balance of the day is at your leisure. (B/L)
This morning, take a walking tour through the lively Muslim Quarter to explore the Islamic food markets before your flight to Beijing, capital of China. (B)
Sightseeing today includes a stroll through Tian'anmen Square past Chairman Mao's Mausoleum and to the treasure - filled Forbidden City, the largest and best - preserved collection of ancient buildings in China. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was home to emperors as well as the centreof politics. (B/L)
The Great Wall of China once stretched 4,000 miles across China's barren northern terrain from the Bohai Sea to the Gobi Desert. Head north to a village where the Great Wall is well preserved and walk along the wall to enjoy sweeping vistas of this mammoth fortress. Our first insight into China 3

Our tour was exceptionally organised using planes, trains and coach to see the major "must see" parts of China. The local guides made each place far more meaningful even though we'd taken definitive guide books with us. The tour guide who was with us for the entire time was able to give us continuity and deal with the logistics of each day and how ...read more we were going to achieve the itinerary with regular toilet stops. We were primed the night before as to what we'd need in the way of wet weather gear by being told the local weather forecast. Anna our guide was the best that we've ever met. She was totally organised and her English was excellent and she lay down her expectations of us like being on time and where we were to meet. She called us Anna's family which gave us all a sense of belonging.

We also were impressed at the way China is tackling pollution, the very good roads, the quality of the new buildings and the advances in education. Too many great highlights to mention but the Terracotta Warriors and the Great Wall were among the best.

It was a tour filled with endless attractions. Items such as the acrobatics show was out of this world. Dances that we saw were fantastic. All in all we had a jolly good time. Tour Director Charles was a friendly, helpful, caring and knowledgeable person who provided a professional service throughout the tour.
The only improvement that is needed is ...read more to find a way of minimising the need for tour participants to carry heavy (main) luggage over long distances at the airports and railway stations - even through escalators. In fact a suitcase fell on me while on the escalator and I fell down on the person behind me. Luckily he was strong enough to catch me thereby preventing any injury. This is important because the majority of participants are senior citizens. Anyway it was a fantastic tour that we would recommend to anyone.
