There is so much to discover across Australia, from vibrant cities to dreamy coasts and impressive wilderness. APT have introduced a new series of itineraries to showcase it all in Australia’s Southeast pocket, giving guests memorable experiences in an intimate small group setting.

APT’s new South Coast Explorer Tours take in national parks, stunning coastlines, and outback landscapes in New South Wales and Victoria. With a maximum of just 20 passengers, these small group discoveries run as either an eight day trip or 14 day journey.

8 Day South Coast Explorer – Sydney to Melbourne

Leaving from Sydney, this journey takes in the Royal National Park, the iconic blowhole of Kiama, Jervis Bay and Booderee National Park – and that is just day one! A highlight of today’s adventures is joining a local indigenous expert to learn about traditional bush food, medicine and survival skills.

Day two is equally enjoyable, with an eco adventure off the coast of Huskisson where you’ll be in awe of the rocky headlands and romanced by the beauty of Honeymoon Bay. To top it off, you’re taste buds will be set alight with dinner at Rick Stein at Bannisters.

Onward to Kosciuszko National Park where you will discover the intriguing formations of Jillabenan Cave, soak in a spring fed outdoor thermal pool, take in sweeping views from the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, and dine 1,937 metres (6,354 feet) above Thredbo village savouring the vistas and the flavours of Eagles Nest Restaurant.

Step back in time as you cross Victoria’s stunning high country into Kelly Country and get an insight into the life of notorious bushranger, Ned Kelly and his gang. Visit iconic sites like Stringybark Creek where the gang had a shootout with police, Benalla Heritage Trail bursting with stories to tell, and the site of the Last Stand of Ned Kelly at Glenrowan.

Finish your tour on a high with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Healesville Sanctuary and enjoy a delicious lunch in the Yarra Valley wine region, raising a glass to an incredible trip and your fellow travellers before concluding your journey in Melbourne.

Melbourne, Victoria

This tour also operates in reverse travelling from Melbourne to Sydney, or if you can’t get enough of this Australian region, perhaps consider the 14 day South Coast Explorer itinerary.

14 Day South Coast Explorer – Sydney to Melbourne

Following the same route between Sydney and Melbourne, this itinerary adds some time in the incredible Blue Mountains and on the breathtaking Great Ocean Road to your journey. Similarly, it can be travelled in either direction, from Sydney to Melbourne or from Melbourne to Sydney.

Starting out in Sydney you’ll head west into the Blue Mountains to ride the Scenic Railway and the Scenic Cableway offering views that will leave you awestruck. You’ll enjoy two nights amidst this beautiful landscape, giving you time to see the iconic Three Sisters rock formation and enjoy sunset drinks perched above unforgettable panoramas.

Leaving the Blue Mountains behind you’ll return to Sydney where you will cruise atop the waters of Sydney Harbour and spend a night amidst the city lights before hitting the road following the same itinerary as the 8 Day South Coast Explorer.

Where the shorter itinerary comes to a close in Melbourne, this longer journey continues from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road, where every curve throws up incredible coastal scenery. Enjoy a visit to the seaside town of Torquay, where the Great Ocean Road begins and make Lorne your base from where you will travel on the next day to see the famous 12 Apostles. Back to Lorne for a second night, you will return to Melbourne and bid farewell to your exploration of the South Coast.
