If you're a weekend warrior looking to climb the tallest peak in northern Africa in a little amount of time, well, look no further. Starting from the village of Imlil, you’ll make the epic trek to Mt Toubkal rocky summit and back over two days of exhilarating hiking and jaw-dropping views. Challenging yet so freakin’ rewarding, this active adventure will have your heart pumping, your legs burning, and your heart yearning for even more Morocco.
Itinerary
Arrival Day. Please arrive at the meeting point no later than 2:30PM before your departure to Imlil. Enjoy a brief welcome meeting with the group before transferring by bus to Imlil, our base for the trek and a major trekking hub in the High Atlas. Upon arrival your team cooks will be preparing a delicious meal for dinner. Stay: Auberge Tafraout Armed (D)
You’ll be able to see the small villages clinging to the surrounding hills and the valley of the Oued Rhirhaia seeming to fold out forever towards the horizon. You’ll begin the trek at 1740m and climb to the camp at 3206m. Food tonight will be provided by Berber cooks and the camp is at the base of Toubkal with beautiful views of the valley. Stay: Toubkal Refuge (B/L/D)
Travel back to the town of Imlil for a total hike of 19km. While it will be easier to hike down the whole hike will take between 11 and 12 hours making for a very long day. When you arrive to Imlil enjoy free time to grab a delicious meal before getting some well deserved rest. Stay: Auberge Tafraout Armed (B/L/D)
After breakfast transfer back to Marrakech, arriving around 12pm. The tour ends on arrival to the airport or at the Marrakech hotel for those have booked post-tour nights. (B)
Trip Inclusions
- Conquer Mt Toubkal over a long weekend.
- Soak in the incredible views over the Atlas Mountains.
- Trek to and from the village of Imlil with mules herdsmen.
- Challenging mountain hikes to summit Mount Toubkal (2 days)
- All transport between destinations and to/from included activities
- Hotel (2 Nights, possibly multi-share), mountain refuges/ tented camps (1 Night, multipshare)
- Local mountain gîtes: Gites are accommodation in family homes, or mountain huts, usually in mountain villages and are very, very simple. If you have this expectation in mind we are sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Sleeping arrangements are multi-share. Mattresses are provided. You will need to have your own sleeping bag and sleeping sheet, and bath towel. Bathroom facilities are basic and shared. Hot water is often not available. You will enjoy delicious homemade dinners of local produce, dining in a traditional manner, often sitting on the floor in a cozy salon.
- Camping: We sleep in modern two person tents which are easy to set up. Foam mattresses are provided for you to sleep on during our camping. If you would like more comfort please bring a light weight self-inflating mattress such as a thermarest. Pillows are not provided so you may also wish to bring an inflatable pillow. You will need to bring a sleeping bag and we recommend a lightweight sleeping sheet as well (for extra warmth or for when hot). Bathroom facilities are "au naturelle" We will hide our "hole in the ground" toilet with a tent, and ask that all toilet paper is burnt. You can also make use the toilets and showers at the Toubkal refuge, but you will be asked to pay and often the camp is some distance from the refuge. Don't forget your flashlight/torch. Those worn as "headlamps" are especially useful.
- Hotel: In Marrakech we will stay in a local hotel in the new town. This is approximately a 25 minute walk to the central medina.
- Please note that Morocco is a developing country and as such the infrastructure is not as reliable as you would expect at home. Expect quirky plumbing and the odd cold shower!
