Itinerary

Darwin is the kind of place that excites all your senses. It's always tropical, which means you have a constant glow. The aroma of Top End delights wafts from markets. The horizons are wide and sunsets blazing. Take in sights and attractions that tell stories of the NT capital's history on a city tour.

As the day begins to disappear, follow the lead of the colourful locals to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market. Your Travel Director will give you the lowdown, highlighting the eclectic range of cuisine on offer – expect everything from Greek to Japanese but it is always hard to go past a Laksa (own expense). What a tasty start to your getaway. Stay: The Leaa Resort

The ancient landscapes of Litchfield National Park are shaped by water, as you'll fast discover when exploring this immense protected wilderness. There are rivers, waterfalls and waterholes. Get set to visit Florence Falls, then take a dip in the gin-clear pool of Wangi Falls, this dreamy setting enveloped by monsoon forest (Swimming is seasonal and opening is controlled by NT Parks).

The landscape is also shaped by termites. The national park is pocked with enormous termite mounds, which are architectural feats complete with tunnels and nursery chambers. Small creatures with a big vision. (B/D) Stay: Contour Hotel Katherine

The region's main attraction is its stunning Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, which carves the countryside in spectacular form. This awe-inspiring natural wonder features a series of gorges sculpted from ancient sandstone, offering breathtaking views and unique geological formations.

Sit back and enjoy a cruise through this ancient landscape, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, home to the Jawoyn people, where you'll have the opportunity to learn about their rich cultural heritage and traditions. The cruise not only provides a visual feast but also enriches your understanding of the deep spiritual connection the Jawoyn people have with the land.

In the afternoon, join Tom Curtain's award-winning Katherine Outback Experience to delve into the Northern Territory's unique pastoral history and culture. (B)

Today is your chance to reset your body's natural rhythms with a morning dip in Katherine Hot Springs – because days are better when you begin them in thermal waters. These hot springs will have you relaxed in no time. Before venturing deep into Kakadu, you're poised for refreshments with a short stopover in the film-set-like town of Pine Creek, where buildings date to the heady gold rush days. In Kakadu, you'll take a guided walk to view ancient Aboriginal rock art at Burrungkuy (Nourlangie). (B) Stay: Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel

If you want a different perspective, sign up for a scenic flight over the national park, revealing just how wide, wild and wonderful this part of the world really is (own expense). Australia is home to some of the oldest art in the world, and much of it decorates rock walls at Ubirr – this jaw-dropping site protects Aboriginal rock paintings and carvings dating back more than 20,000 years. If you thought that was impressive, wait till you see the view over Kakadu from the top of the escarpment.

This afternoon, there's nothing between you and nature, the dramatic escarpments, waterholes and abundant wildlife of Kakadu looming large. Speaking of large, there are saltwater crocs to spot while you drift away on a Yellow Water Billabong cruise. Your local cruise guide will share the secrets of these ancient waterways. Top off your holiday sharing a Farewell Dinner with your Travel Director and travel mates. (B/FD)

Following your Kakadu tour, you may also spot enormous ‘salties' lurking in river crossings you pass by. Plus you may also see them at Fogg Dam. But here you will definitely witness a cacophony of birds. This really is a twitcher's paradise. A fitting end to this epic wilderness journey. (B)

Top End Highlights   2 , Australia, Jun 2025
Both tour guide and driver were great. Tour guide had great knowledge of everywhere we went. We saw amazing country and the billabong cruise was are highlight. The culture experiences were very interesting. The days were packed and a few of the walks were a bit difficult for some on the tour.
Top End fantastic holiday 2 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2022
The Top End Highlights tour was fantastic, guides knowledge and humour added to the experience. Was hoping to see Aboriginal art and see landscapes but came away with far more knowledge regarding history and the artwork and landscape was mind blowing. Really appreciated the work Hannah from Global Journeys put in to make our experience so memorable.
Excellent Top End tour 4 , NSW, Australia, May 2022
We really enjoyed the tour covering Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks. We had an excellent tour guide, Liz, who was always cheerful and nothing was too much trouble for her. She had challenges finding places for us to have lunch due to staff shortages but always managed to sort things out. Liz was also very knowledgeable about the NT. We really read more enjoyed the flight over Kakadu which was an excellent overview of the area. We were happy with the accommodation provided which was always clean and comfortable. We were very happy with the help we had from Georgie Walpole at Global Journeys with this booking.
Great Introduction to the Top End 3 , QLD, Australia, May 2021
First time touring with AAT Kings but we'd travelled previously with associated companies Trafalgar and Insight Vacations. The top end scenery was great and we saw and did what we expected: swimming in waterfalls, Katherine Gorge cruise, Kakadu cruise, saw fresh and saltwater crocodiles, lots of birdlife and Aboriginal art on sandstone cliffs. The colours read more in this area are so vibrant! Accommodation was good, everything worked but don't expect anything flash. Included food was ok. The Tour Director told us at the tour meeting at the start that there were limited food options available due to lack of hospitality staff, we had to buy sandwiches for lunch every day as that was all that was available. There was only 1 optional and we didn't do that. A full bus of Aussies - all states except Tassie represented and all travellers were on time. Excellent Tour Director - Liz, she shared her extensive knowledge of flora and fauna as well as the local history. Thoroughly enjoyable tour.
Top End Highlights of NT 2 , VIC, Australia, May 2021
A great tour organised by AAT Kings of the Top End Highlights. The tour director Liz and Driver Mark were exceptional and were always available and nothing was a problem. They made sure everyone had plenty of water as it was quite hot. We ended up seeing what we wanted to see, and when we had to isolate we were not forgotten. This is the third read more time we have organised trips with Global Journeys and would not hesitate to book again.
Wonderful trip through The Top End 1 , QLD, Australia, Jul 2017
Excellent tour guide Tony! Very knowledgeable - overall it was a great trip for me and my wife. Good organisation by Global Journey too. Highlight was the stay in Wilderness Lodge although it was too short - an additional day would have been better. Kakadu Air scenic flight was also very good. The Katherine gorges dinner cruise and dinner was very good. read more "Be my guest" experience at Katherine was too long. A nice relaxing tour of Darwin, Katherine and Kakadu.
Great Road Trip in the Top End of Australia 2 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2017
To start with we had a great Tour Director Cam and a very careful and friendly Driver Narelle. We were are friendly group of 26 people that got along well and helped each other when required and I would highly recommend this trip to others.
Top End Highlights 2 , New Zealand, Aug 2016
The hotels were a mixture but the highlight was the last night at the Wilderness Lodge. Really lived up to expectations. The best bit of the tour was the dinner cruise at Katherine Gorge. The scenery was spectacular and the food was the best on the trip (they really made a great effort for the vegetarians). Was not impressed with the first night in read more Darwin - The Vibe is expensive and there are so many nice hotels to choose from in Darwin that I would rather stay somewhere more friendly. Darwin is a lovely city and I cannot wait to return. I did not take the optional excursions.
Enlightening trip with wonderful tour director And driver 1 , VIC, Australia, Jul 2015
Our tour was an enlightening experience all made possible by both wonderful Tour Director And Driver. Their passion and knowledge of the culture and land was exceptional. My criticism of the accommodation is a little unfair as what was provided was the best available in the area. Future guests should however be aware that some properties would rate lowly on a star basis.
Extremely satisfied with the tour 2 , Australia, Aug 2010
My tour to the Top End was excellent and I would recommend it to everyone who hasn't seen this part of Australia. Our tour director (Lisa) and driver (Sheldon) were friendly, professional, helpful and very knowledgeable. Lisa is a very experienced tour director and Sheldon has additional local knowledge. The standard of accommodation was very good (the read more resort at Katherine could have been better, however the food was a good standard), The Vibe at Darwin and the Croc at Kakadu were outstanding. The included day excursions were very good - cruises on Katherine Gorge, Yellow Water Billabong and East Alligator River, and there were optional excursions as well. In summary, I was extremely satisfied with the tour and would definitely undertake further escorted tours with you.
