Itinerary

On arrival in tropical Darwin, enjoy a tour of the cosmopolitan city before joining your Travel Director and fellow travellers at the colourful Mindil Beach Sunset Market to experience a spectacular sunset under the coconut palms. There's plenty of time to explore the art and crafts, aromas and atmosphere of the marketplace. You may like to try some fresh BBQ seafood or authentic Indian, Chinese, Greek or Japanese cuisine. Stay: Travelodge Darwin

Travel to Litchfield National Park, pausing to examine the amazing phenomenon of hundreds of magnetic termite mounds standing up to two metres high in a wide swathe of otherwise empty terrain. Stop at Florence Falls, a spectacular double-plunge waterfall leading to a popular swimming hole, before venturing on to tropical Wangi Falls for a swim in its large waterhole surrounded by spectacular monsoon rainforest. Continue to Katherine, a thriving town that was originally established as an outpost on the Australian Overland Telegraph Line. (B/D) Stay: Contour Hotel Katherine (2 nights)

This morning, meet Manuel Pamkal to share his passion for the rich traditional culture into which he was born. There is the opportunity to purchase some local Indigenous art. Later, sit back and relax in tranquil surroundings as you cruise on Katherine Gorge. A series of thirteen deep gorges carved through ancient rock, there are many Aboriginal paintings on the sandstone walls throughout the system, some of which are thousands of years old. Discover the history and culture of the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of Nitmiluk, as you explore the magnificent gorges with a backdrop of stunning rock-faces that change colour with the setting of the sun. Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles nesting along the banks. This evening, consider the optional experience of the Stockman's Bush Dinner under the stars. (B)

This morning you have the opportunity to swim in the waterholes of magnificent Edith Falls. Then pass through the mining town of Pine Creek, where buildings date back to the heady gold-rush days. Travel deep into World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park and discover spectacular escarpment, serene waterholes and teeming wildlife. Board the famed Yellow Water Billabong Cruise, spotting basking crocodiles and abundant birdlife with a local guide. Later, take a guided walk to view ancient Aboriginal rock paintings at Nourlangie, regarded as one of the premier rock art sites in the Top End. (B) Stay: Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel, Jabiru (2 nights)

This morning, perhaps take an optional experience scenic flight over Kakadu. Later, visit Ubirr, another of Kakadu's foremost rock art galleries. The paintings here provide a fascinating record of Indigenous life over thousands of years: look for naturalistic paintings of animals, traditional x-ray art, and paintings of early contact with European people. Before leaving the site, climb to the top of a nearby rocky outcrop for superb views over the floodplains and escarpment country. Celebrate your Top End journey this evening at a Farewell Dinner with your Travel Director and new-found friends. (B/D)

Leave Kakadu this morning to return to Darwin. Keep an eye on the murky river crossings to see if you can spot saltwater crocodiles. Your final stop is Fogg Dam, a birdwatcher's paradise. Bid farewell to your fellow travellers as your holiday comes to an end. (B)

Excellent Top End tour 1 , NSW, Australia, May 2022
We really enjoyed the tour covering Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks. We had an excellent tour guide, Liz, who was always cheerful and nothing was too much trouble for her. She had challenges finding places for us to have lunch due to staff shortages but always managed to sort things out. Liz was also very knowledgeable about the NT. We were very happy with the help we had from Georgie Walpole at Global Journeys with this booking.
Great Introduction to the Top End 2 , QLD, Australia, May 2021
First time touring with AAT Kings but we'd travelled previously with associated companies Trafalgar and Insight Vacations. The top end scenery was great and we saw and did what we expected: swimming in waterfalls, Katherine Gorge cruise, Kakadu cruise, saw fresh and saltwater crocodiles, lots of birdlife and Aboriginal art on sandstone cliffs. The colours ...read more in this area are so vibrant! Accommodation was good, everything worked but don't expect anything flash. Included food was ok. The Tour Director told us at the tour meeting at the start that there were limited food options available due to lack of hospitality staff, we had to buy sandwiches for lunch every day as that was all that was available. There was only 1 optional and we didn't do that. A full bus of Aussies - all states except Tassie represented and all travellers were on time. Excellent Tour Director - Liz, she shared her extensive knowledge of flora and fauna as well as the local history. Thoroughly enjoyable tour.
Top End Highlights of NT 1 , VIC, Australia, May 2021
A great tour organised by AAT Kings of the Top End Highlights. The tour director Liz and Driver Mark were exceptional and were always available and nothing was a problem. They made sure everyone had plenty of water as it was quite hot. We ended up seeing what we wanted to see, and when we had to isolate we were not forgotten. This is the third ...read more time we have organised trips with Global Journeys and would not hesitate to book again.
Wonderful trip through The Top End 0 , QLD, Australia, Jul 2017
Excellent tour guide Tony! Very knowledgeable - overall it was a great trip for me and my wife. Good organisation by Global Journey too. Highlight was the stay in Wilderness Lodge although it was too short - an additional day would have been better. Kakadu Air scenic flight was also very good. The Katherine gorges dinner cruise and dinner was very good. ...read more "Be my guest" experience at Katherine was too long. A nice relaxing tour of Darwin, Katherine and Kakadu.
Great Road Trip in the Top End of Australia 1 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2017
To start with we had a great Tour Director Cam and a very careful and friendly Driver Narelle. We were are friendly group of 26 people that got along well and helped each other when required and I would highly recommend this trip to others.
Top End Highlights 1 , New Zealand, Aug 2016
The hotels were a mixture but the highlight was the last night at the Wilderness Lodge. Really lived up to expectations. The best bit of the tour was the dinner cruise at Katherine Gorge. The scenery was spectacular and the food was the best on the trip (they really made a great effort for the vegetarians). Was not impressed with the first night in ...read more Darwin - The Vibe is expensive and there are so many nice hotels to choose from in Darwin that I would rather stay somewhere more friendly. Darwin is a lovely city and I cannot wait to return. I did not take the optional excursions.
