The Kimberley region is wildly beautiful. If you've been lucky enough to explore this ruggedly remote corner of the world, you’ll have many memories and pictures that paint this same spectacular story. If you are yet to visit, then now is the time.

Located in the northernmost region of Western Australia and covering over 423,000 square kilometres, the Kimberley is three times larger than England – but with a population of less than 40,000. However, despite its iconic remoteness and sparse population, the Kimberley is flourishing with life. Here you can find sprawling wilderness, soaring canyons, and some of Australia’s most stunning freshwater swimming holes and gorges.

On a tour of Western Australia, each destination and sight will outdo the last. With so many reasons to discover this wild land so close to home, AAT Kings have outlined their top Kimberley highlights.

El Questro – Chamberlain Gorge

This three kilometre long fresh waterhole nestled in the El Questro Wilderness Park is fringed by tropical vegetation and framed by towering escarpments. Here you can spot freshwater crocodiles, archer fish and barramundi beneath the surface, or watch as the reflections of soaring facades ripple across the glassy waters. A cruise along Chamberlain Gorge with a sparkling wine in hand is the perfect way to soak up the serenity as this natural paradise comes alive around you.

Exploring Emma Gorge with AAT Kings

El Questro – Emma Gorge

With acres upon acres of wilderness stretching as far as the eye can see, it is no wonder El Questro has many secret (and not so secret) places to discover. Emma Gorge is arguably one of Australia’s most magnificent waterfalls, accessible by a peaceful and picturesque walk over rocky terrain. You’ll be rewarded with an oasis complete with a crystal clear water hole cradled by rugged cliffs. It is the perfect place for a dip, but aim for the right side of the waterfall where a thermal spring makes for a warmer soak (the water in the main pool is usually freezing cold!).

Gantheaume Point, Broome

Broome – Cable Beach & Gantheaume Point

There are very few places that capture the essence of Australia’s West Coast like Cable Beach. With 22 kilometres of white sand meeting the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, it is the perfect canvas waiting to be painted with the vibrant colours of a spectacular West Coast sunset at the end of the day. Adding to the breathtaking colours of the region are the deep red rock cliffs that overlook the coastline. Preserved in the reef rock are said to be footprints of dinosaurs and plant fossils, making this special place not only scenically stunning, but also a treasured paleontological site.

The Bungle Bungles, Western Australia

Bungle Bungle Ranges – Purnululu National Park

The Bungle Bungles are recognised as one of the world’s most fascinating geological landscapes thanks to the iconic orange and black striped sandstone domes that call Purnululu National Park home. This beehive-style natural phenomenon has been shaped by the elements over millions of years, and is now an iconic Australian experience. Take a helicopter flight over this landscape, taking in the series of unique formations from the sky, or opt for a 4WD option as your guide shares the history, culture and geological significance of this remarkable area.
