'Patea' (Doubtful Sound) meaning ‘place of silence' in Māori, spans a staggering 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the head of the fiord to the Tasman Sea. It is the deepest of New Zealand's 14 fjords and its enormity leaves all who visit feeling humbled and in awe of its powerful presence.
