“Ancient Egypt”
- QLD, Australia Jul 2019

We did the 9 day Nile Valley Highlights small group tour with Peregrine. Overall the tour was great. Our guide, Hoda, was absolutely brilliant. Everything was organised perfectly and Hoda was extremely efficient and planned everything to a tee. We also had a very good group of people that we travelled with. Seeing the ancient sights of Egypt was amazing. It certainly isn't a "luxury" tour (I don't really think Egypt does luxury very well) but had some unique experiences (especially the overnight train ride to Luxor!!). For the price the overall experience was amazing and would highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to see the main sights of Egypt.

“Wonderful tour of East Africa”
- ACT, Australia Jun 2019

I booked with Global Journeys for a Peregrine Tour of East Africa. They offered a very competitive price and I was very happy with the service they provided. I was kept up to date with any changes in the itinerary and all correspondence was made in a very timely manner. The tour suited us perfectly. The group was small (10 people) which worked very well for a tour spanning four national parks in Kenya and Tanzania. This tour is highly recommended, particularly around the migration season.

“Magic world of Morocco”
- QLD, Australia Apr 2019 View Photo

What a fantastic trip. Morocco has been one of the best trips we have done. Tremendous scenery, colour, sights, sounds, smells, the people and the culture all made for a wonderful trip. Our riad accommodation was generally very good, and the overnight stay in the desert camp was a first class experience.

Everything worked like clockwork. Our Tour Leader, Samir, was absolutely fantastic - a wealth of knowledge, very personable, catered for each individual's needs, organised the tour guides to perfection and if anything was not up to scratch with local arrangements, food, etc, he did not hesitate to step in and make sure it was corrected. Full marks Samir, an absolute treasure.

Global Journeys handled the changes to trip details, hotels, and travel arrangements very expertly. I have absolute confidence in recommending them to fellow travellers - well done Jemma, top marks for you too.

The extension to Essaouira was magnificent and is highly recommended to all fellow travellers - don't miss this lovely seaside fishing village.

“Very enjoyable small group tour of Portugal”
- QLD, Australia Apr 2019 1 Helpful Vote View Photo

The trip was well worth it. The itinerary was well balanced with plenty of time for walking to/around attractions and points of interest. Our Tour Leader, Isabel, did a great job in handling all the tour arrangements and had excellent knowledge of Portugal to pass on. The group members all got on very well, for a very enjoyable trip.

The only slight negatives are: 1) the length of time we had to stand around waiting for our coach to get back to our pick-up point due to the strict parking and pick-up arrangements placed on all tour buses and cars. Sometimes this took up to 30 minutes before we could be picked up; and 2) too much time was spent at Sintra's Pena Palace and Gardens, this provided little interest to most tour members - we would have preferred to spend additional time walking in the small town of Sintra, much more interesting.

“Fantastic Borneo Exploration”
- QLD, Australia Mar 2019 View Photo

This was a fantastic small group tour. Except for one hotel, we had good accommodation, excellent meals, great company and a fantastic tour guide who taught us about her country and their lives. Seeing some of these endangered species in the wild was a unique and rewarding experience. This trip is highly recommended.

“Highlights of Morocco”
- New Zealand Jan 2019 View Photo

We had a fantastic time on this trip! This was our first time with Peregrine and they didn't disappoint in delivering what we were looking for. This was a winter trip which had its advantages of being in the low season therefore less crowds at most places and much cooler and more comfortable than in summer.

The highlight of the trip was the Sahara Desert - it was absolutely memorable for us. We had the best food there in fact, cooked by the camp's staff who were also the entertainers in the evening by the fire! All the local guides were great and very knowledgeable, and the most outstanding one was Rehda at the Kassar Amridil!

Accommodation in all the riads was mostly comfortable except for a few problems we encountered from insufficient or lack of hot water showers, blocked drainage, to a burst pipe in one of the bathrooms! Special commendations to our tour guide leader, Abdel Jalil, whom we were very lucky to have on this trip. He was entertaining, most helpful and attentive to our needs and extremely knowledgeable. We plan to request for him to be our tour leader the next time we return to Morocco!

The only thing we were quite disappointed about with this trip is it didn't cover the northern cities like Tangier and Chefchaouen which I believe would make this a true Highlights of Morocco trip.

Footnote: Have sufficient, in fact plenty of local cash on hand as not many places takes credit cards and not every ATM machine accepts foreign bank cards either!

“Holiday of a lifetime in Antarctica”
- NSW, Australia Jan 2019

Antarctica in January is spectacular!!! I cannot recommend this cruise enough. The check-in was easy, the cabins were clean and quite comfortable considering their small size, the food was amazing and the scenery...beyond words. The Drake Passage is as bad as everyone says, make sure you take prescription medication. Day 1 in Antarctica and we had a continental landing, spotted penguins and seals, had Orcas approach the ship who swam underneath us and I was lucky enough to camp on Antarctica!

Believe it or not but each day was better than the last, we had a mixture of weather; it snowed, we had clear skies and it was overcast at times (great for photos). We witnessed all sorts of bird life, whales and seals. I loved the Islands with penguin colonies and sending a post card from Port Lockroy was a highlight. The presentations from the experts were interesting and all staff are so friendly and inclusive.

I will remember this trip forever. I would advise that you do not start the tour in Buenos Aires, instead begin from Ushuaia and explore Tierra Del Fuego National Park and the port town of Ushuaia on your own. Those who toured the park through the included trip seemed rushed.

Curated experiences

Why travel if not for the experience? To meet people, see things and do things that you can't see and meet and do at home?

Peregrine start with the highlights, but when the big tour groups hop back on their coach, our local guides will help you find a more unique, personal experience. The pace is more relaxed too. We spend more time in each spot, so you can explore, relax and unwind at your own speed.

Intimate small groups

On a Peregrine tour you'll be travelling with, on average, just 9 other people. So when we say small groups, we mean it. You'll get more personal and attentive service from your local guide, make lasting friendships and explore places off limits to the larger tour groups (like that tiny noodle bar in Hanoi or little Parisian boulangerie).

It's also how we reduce our travel footprint, preserving local experiences for future generations. Peregrine tours are also a popular choice for those travelling solo as they're a great way to meet others with similar interests.

Quality accommodation

Our accommodation is hand-picked by our destination experts for its quality, character, amenities and central location. So your stay is not only memorable, but convenient. This year we're introducing something a bit special: our feature stays.

Each of our tours includes at least one stand out property – places that offer a deeper level of cultural immersion or unique perspective of a destination. It could be a heritage stay in a Rajasthan Palace, a wilderness lodge in the Sri Lankan jungle, a splash of luxury in a Moroccan Riad, or a night in stilt cottages over Myanmar's Inle Lake.

Your expert local guide

Peregrine learnt long ago that the best way to see a destination is with the people who live there. That's why we pioneered the concept of employing local guides: expertly trained, and with a depth and breadth of knowledge you won't find anywhere else.

Want to know the secrets of Tibetan Buddhism? Where to find the best steak in Buenos Aires? Or what makes a Languedoc merlot so special? Your guide, and their local connections, have the answer.

Peregrine's Independent Journeys

While we feel that travelling with a small, like-minded group can elevate a holiday experience, we recognise that some travellers may prefer to see the world with just their friend or partner. So we've created a selection of itineraries for just one or two travellers in both up-and-coming and well established destinations.

You will travel independently and be met by a specialist Peregrine guide in each destination. This allows you to enjoy the benefits of a fully comprehensive itinerary but with the freedom and intimacy of a private tour.

Peregrine Tour FAQ's

Frequently asked questions for clients considering travelling with Peregrine

Getting prepared
Where do I get more information about our trip?

There is a button at the end of each online itinerary that allows you to download detailed trip notes. These provide a more comprehensive itinerary, inclusions and other useful information. Once you've confirmed your booking Global Journeys will send out pre-departure information for your specific trip, which will give you the lowdown about visas, vaccinations and other vital information.

What should I pack?

Once you've confirmed your booking we will send out a detailed pre-departure information pack covering all sorts of practical information, including a general packing list and any other special items you may need to bring.

What immunisations do I need?

Immunisations vary from country to country and we strongly recommend you visit your local doctor or contact the Travellers Medical and Vaccination Centre ( to discuss health requirements for your trip. These organisations will advise you about appropriate inoculations. In some places anti-malaria medication may also be required. Some vaccines need to be administered a few weeks before departure, so allow plenty of time. It is also important that you obtain a certificate of vaccination to bring on your trip. Please note that in some cases a certificate of vaccination is compulsory in order to obtain a visa.

Do I need to take any medical supplies?

Your pre-departure information pack will contain a suggested list of items to bring, but it doesn't cover medications. We recommend you carry personal medical items for managing common minor ailments such as colds, diarrhoea, blisters and sore throats etc. Travellers who take regular medication should take an appropriate supply. Asthma sufferers should ensure that they have an adequate supply of their routine medicine as some major cities have high levels of smog.

How much luggage can I take?

As a general rule you should pack light but bring all the essentials. Leave space in your luggage for souvenirs. You will be required to carry your own bags, and sometimes you will need to lift it on and off public transport, so you should consider using a backpack or soft duffel bag. Suitcases are okay on some of our trips, but not always practical (particularly on the cobbled streets of Europe). Each airline has specific rules about luggage allowances – check directly with them or ask your travel consultant to confirm for you.

Will I be able to do laundry?

Some places we stay have laundry facilities, and those that don't may have laundry facilities nearby. It is a good idea to bring some travel wash and a travel clothesline to cut down on packing space. It is particularly useful if you are on a multi-day activity adventure, such as trekking in remote areas.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

It depends on the trip. Generally these will only be used for more active trips, though we will let you know in the pre-departure information pack that is sent out to you on confirmation of your booking.

How fit do I need to be?

Our trips are designed to be enjoyed by anyone who is reasonably fit. However some trips visit remote areas with limited or non-existent medical facilities so you must be in good health. Factors such as bumpy roads, dust, traffic, stairs, humidity, delays and unfamiliar customs and cultures also add to the physical toll. Keep in mind you will sometimes need to carry your own bags.

Do I need to get a visa for my trip?

Many countries require you to have a visa before arrival. After you've booked your trip Peregrine will send you a pre-departure information pack containing all the visa information. It's best to get visas sorted in advance because the processing time can be quite long.

Do I need to take Travel Insurance?

Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory for all Peregrine trips. Domestic government medical insurance and private health schemes will not cover you in most overseas countries. Peregrine has a policy designed to cover participants in our programs; please ask your consultant for full details. You may take other cover, of course, but you must be adequately insured before participating in our tours. Please check the terms of the policy carefully, particularly the limits of cover (eg. for replacement of photographic equipment, baggage loss etc) and the procedure for making claims (most policies stipulate that claims must be made within a certain time after completion of your journey).

Your policy MUST cover medical costs in case of hospitalisation, emergency travel and repatriation. If you are going on one Peregrine's activity holidays, make sure your insurance covers you for this activity. Once you have paid your deposit or full payment, certain fees will apply if you cancel. Therefore we recommend taking insurance at the time of booking to protect yourself against unforeseen circumstances. Your Peregrine leader will need two copies of your policy - the Tour Leader and our Ground Operator will keep one copy each in the unlikely event of an emergency. The copies must show the policy number and the emergency hotline phone number.

I am going on an activity holiday (trekking, cycling etc). Do I need to pack differently?

Probably. Once you've confirmed your booking with us, we send you an information pack that is specific to the trip you're going on. So if you're climbing Aconcagua or cycling through Provence, we'll send you all the relevant information before your departure date. If you still have questions or want more information you can always contact us via email or phone.

Booking your Peregrine trip
Why should I book my Peregrine trip through Global Journeys?

Our partnership with Peregrine ensures your entire booking process will be handled by your own Global Journeys dedicated Travel Advisor who specialises in all types of touring. You'll receive the best price - guaranteed, and if you return to book another trip (even with another Operator) you'll receive our additional loyalty bonus. The Global Journeys team were awarded Australia's "Best Online Travel Agency" in 2015 by AFTA at the prestigeous NTIA Awards.

Can I just do part of the tour?

Unfortunately it is not possible to do sections of Peregrine tours. However, some of their longer tours are made up of smaller tours completed back-to-back, so it might be possible to book a shorter trip separately

Does the tour price include international flights?

The prices quoted on our site do not include international flights. But our partnerships with the major airlines means we can get you the best price on flights for your intended travel dates. Just ask.

How far in advance do I need to book?

This is a tricky one. We don't know when other people will book, so it's hard to know if and when the tour will fill up. Our advice is to book as soon as you've made the decision to travel, that way you won't be disappointed. However, we can usually take bookings right up until the departure date if there are spaces left so request a quote and we will check availability.

When is the final payment due?

Generally the final payment is due in full 60 days before the departure of your trip. If you've booked your trip within 60 days of the departure date, full payment is needed at the time of booking. Last minute bookings require payment up front before confirmation. Please note that polar trips require full payment 125 days before departure.

You and your travelling companions
Do Peregrine operate typical group tours?

Peregrine doesn't offer typical group tours, and their customers aren't typical group travellers. Peregrine travellers are looking to see a side of a destination they wouldn't see on their own. They want to immerse themselves in the cultures they visit. It's all about authentic experiences with highly experienced leaders who are local to the region. Many meals are included, you will mostly travel in private transport and you will stay in comfortable accommodation with private amenities.

I am a solo traveller, is that a problem?

Not at all. Every year Peregrine take thousands of solo travellers around the world. Their small group tours are twin-share (single ladies share with ladies, chaps with chaps), there's no single supplement to pay on the majority of our small group tours. Of course if you'd prefer to have your own room (at a little extra cost) we can arrange this on most trips. Let us know when you book. For Adventure Cruising and Polar tours, there may be a single supplement to pay depending on the tour, though this will ensure your own cabin - please enquire when booking.

Who will I be travelling with?

While every group is different, Peregrine tours are generally an international crowd with people often coming from Australia, New Zealand, the UK and North America. Most Peregrine travellers are in their 40s, 50s & 60s.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Some of Peregrine's trips include travel by boat, ship or canoe. They will assume you can swim unless you tell us otherwise. If you cannot swim you must let us know so we can inform your Peregrine. Swimming is by no means compulsory during any of their trips, and you do not have to swim if you don't want to.

How much spending money do I need?

Peregrine's trip notes give you an idea of some typical prices in the places you're visiting, and your pre-departure pack will have more details. Remember that with Peregrine some of your meals, your transport, accommodation and entrance fees to major sites are paid in advance so you don't need to factor these into your budget.

What is the best way to take money with me?

Peregrine recommend a combination of cash, an ATM card and perhaps a credit card as back-up. Travellers cheques are a safe way to carry money, however in some places it can be difficult to cash them. As a general rule, American dollars are accepted throughout the world but make sure you have small denomination bills, and that they are not ripped or marked, as this may affect your ability to change them. And remember to check with your bank about using your cards overseas.

Do I need to tip the local guide?

Your tour leader works hard to ensure you have a great trip, so please don't hold back if you feel they have earned a tip for their efforts. You can choose to tip them individually or make a group presentation at the end of the tour. Full details of tipping are covered in the trip-specific pre-departure pack that we send before you leave.

Is a Peregrine small group tour for me?

If you're inquisitive and adventurous, want to travel in small groups and see a culture through the eyes of a local, then the answer is 'yes'!

On your trip
Why do Peregrine use local tour guides?

One of the main reasons travellers choose Peregrine is because they use tour leaders who were born and raised in the region. They are highly qualified, speak excellent English and boast intimate knowledge of their homeland. Travelling with a local leader means you will enjoy a local perspective, meeting their friends along the way, eating where the locals eat and seeing sights you won't find in guidebooks. Aside from the benefit to you we are providing income and training to local people. We work to ensure our staff and local partners are the best in the business. Throughout the regions we visit, our operators possess a wealth of knowledge and experience so you can be confident you're in safe hands. They are out in the field, continually monitoring and refining their adventures to ensure we offer the most innovative trips, as well as the best value for money.

Do I get any free time on my trip?

All Peregrine trips are a combination of organised activities and free time. Their detailed itineraries give you an idea of how much free time to expect. It also depends on the trip, eg. some of their trekking adventures may have less free time than other trips. Many of your most memorable experiences will occur when you branch out and do your own thing, so Peregrine know it's important that you have time to yourself. The framework is in place and the details are taken care of, but on many days you decide what you want to see and do.

Will there be time to explore the start and finish cities or should I allow extra time?

Despite designing balanced itineraries that allow you to explore the places you are visiting, Peregrine know there is always more to discover. So if you want to arrive early or extend your visit after the trip has finished we can help arrange additional accommodation. Peregrine also have trip extensions around some of the start and end cities, for example many people add a Zanzibar beach extension to the end of their Mount Kilimanjaro trip!

What standard of accommodation should I expect?

You'll stay in centrally located, quality accommodation with private amenities. Peregrine generally choose smaller hotels to avoid large chains, and ty to offer more authentic accommodation that reflects a region. The trip notes will tell you if accommodation differs from the regular style.

What will the food be like?

Peregrine love introducing you to the flavours of the world. Their leaders are local to the regions you visit, meaning they can take you to out of the way places for the most interesting cuisine. Their local knowledge comes in handy for deciphering menus and you can get tips on local delicacies and the most interesting markets to visit.

I'm a vegetarian or have special dietary needs, is that a problem?

No problem. Just let us know in advance so we can inform our local leaders. That way they can make sure you are looked after in the local restaurants. Keep in mind that in some places your diet might be slightly limited, as meat often forms an integral part of the local diet.

Can I book extra accommodation for the start or end of the tour?

Yes. In all cases, we can organise extra accommodation for the start and end of the tour. Just let us know and we'll get a quote for you. Peregrine also have trip extensions in many of the destinations they travel to, meaning you can take a short break after the main event. One small exception – visa regulations prevent us from booking additional accommodation in Bhutan.

What type of ground transportation is used?

Peregrine mostly use private vehicles, and sometimes local transport where it adds to the experience (ie. Shinkansen). The trip notes can give you more information. In certain areas, whether it's the old quarter of a city or a remote rural valley, the best way to explore is on foot, so we try to incorporate some walking. Peregrine might also use boats, ships, camels, bicycles which can all add to the authentic nature of their trips.

Are there any long travelling days?

Peregrine's itineraries indicate travelling time and mode of transport. Although there are some days where you travel relatively long distances, their trips are organised to make travelling as convenient and efficient as possible. Peregrine occasionally take domestic flights. Travelling by land between different parts of a country or region is sometimes a highlight of a trip, with interesting communities and spectacular landscapes encountered en route.

Arrival & departure details

Airport transfers are usually included in the price of Peregrine tours – just check the itinerary (trip notes) or with your Global Journeys travel consultant. Tours always start in a specified hotel and we let you know exactly when you need to be at that hotel.

Terms & Conditions

All the boring small print. We recommend you read them, as no one likes surprises!
