Itinerary

Welcome to Antananarivo, the capital and largest city of the gorgeous island nation of Madagascar. The fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar sits like a jewel in the crown of the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Mozambique. Antananarivo itself is a pretty city, known for its heart-shaped lake surrounded by jacaranda trees in the middle of the city centre. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to get your bearings, before meeting our local guide over a welcome dinner this evening. (D)

This morning we'll enjoy a leisurely scenic drive towards the eastern side of the island and Andasibe National Park. Along the way we'll stop at the Reserve Peyrieras Madagascar Exotic to see the many varied species of reptiles found on the island. After a lunch stop in Marozevo, we continue to Andasibe National Park. The rainforest here is home to 11 species of lemur and many other endemic rare and endangered animals. After our arrival, we'll embark on an evening visit to the park to discover some of the fascinating nocturnal wildlife. (B/D)

Today we'll visit Analamazaotra Reserve, once part of the larger Mantadia National Park. This protected forest is home to 108 different species of bird, 14 species of lemur and 84 types of amphibians. Enjoy the wonders of the rainforest as we hike, tracking lemurs, spotting exotic plants, trees, insects and Madagascan reptiles along the way. If we are lucky, we may spot the iconic 'Indri Indri' lemur, the largest species of lemur in the world. We'll also have a chance to explore Vakona Island, including many photo opportunities and close up experiences with the animals. (B/D)

Leaving the rainforest behind this morning we continue south along the famous National Road 7, towards the town of Ambatolampy. Here we meet the villagers who handmake traditional pots from recycled aluminium. We'll continue our travels to arrive in Antsirabe this afternoon, famous in Madagascar for its warm thermal waters and colourful rickshaws. (B/L/D)

Continuing south through the highlands this morning, we'll stop at the town of Ambositra, the handicraft capital of Madagascar. This town is well known for its unique type of woodcarving, called Zafimaniry Art, which has been added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Here, we'll visit some different craft workshops and enjoy a special lunch, during which if we're lucky some folk dancers and musicians will entertain us with a show. In the late afternoon sit back, relax and enjoy the passing scenery on the way to the rainforests of Ranomafana National Park. (B/L/D)

Admire stunning natural beauty whilst exploring the lush Ranomafana National Park today. It's an early start this morning as a park ranger and a tracker take us through the park to view the unique flora and fauna of this region, including 12 species of lemur and 115 species of birds. The afternoon is at leisure to further explore or simply to rest and relax. This evening we'll do another trek, this time along the National Road in search of nocturnal lemurs, such as the microcebus or mouse lemur, and other nocturnal animals including chameleons. (B/L/D)

Today, we bid farewell to the spectacular Madagascan highlands and enter the dry bushland and semi-desert of southern Madagascar. The people in this area are specialists in handmade high-quality silk and paper products using old traditional methods. After visiting some of these mills, we'll stop for lunch in Ambalavao, before continuing to the Anja Reserve. Managed by the local village community, this reserve is home to many unique species of lemurs, including the very famous ring-tailed lemur. (B/L/D)

Get ready for a Jurassic-age adventure today, experiencing the wonders of the Isalo National Park. Accompanied by a park ranger we'll hike through the canyons, oases and lunar landscapes of the national park before arriving at a stunning waterfall. Formed during the Jurassic period, the unique flora and fauna of this region have evolved to adapt to the local conditions. This afternoon, we'll have the opportunity to swim in the stunning natural swimming pool. Special Experience: Savour the opportunity to star gaze as you've never star gazed before in the hauntingly beautiful Isalo National Park. (B/D)

After breakfast, our sightseeing continues as we head towards the Mozambique Channel. Along the way, we pass several villages formed during the Sapphire Rush and stop at the Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park, a landscape of dry forest, marshes and savannahs. We also stop in the port town of Toliara where we have some time to explore. Later this afternoon we'll make our way to the quiet fishing village of Ifaty, home to a beautiful palm-fringed beach. (B/D)

Early this morning, visit the Reniala Reserve, known as the 'Spiny Forest', thanks to its unique tall and spiny bushes that are endemic to southern Madagascar. Then we discover an impressive forest of baobab trees and other medicinal plants. After we return to the hotel for breakfast, we'll have the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to relax and unwind, or to explore more of this colourful seaside town at our own pace. (B/D)

This morning we say goodbye to Ifaty as we begin our journey back to the capital, Antananarivo. After our flight, the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure for you to relax. (B)

Discover Madagascar's pretty capital on an orientation city tour this morning. Here, we'll see some gems of the city, including the Old Upper Town, the city centre and the colourful Lower Town before visiting the Blue Hill (or Ambohimanga), a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site. Special Experience: Discover the culinary delights of Antananarivo during a lunch time cooking class. Enjoy some time to yourself before a group farewell dinner this evening. (B/L/D)

Today marks the completion of our adventure across incredible Madagascar. We hope you leave with fantastic memories! (B)
