Itinerary

Be met at Adelaide airport, where you will meet your Driver-Guide and board your 4WD vehicle. Travel to Port Augusta, situated at the head of Spencer Gulf. This iconic town sits at the crossroads of Australia, where the Sydney-Perth and Adelaide-Alice Springs railway lines intersect.

Today you'll also visit the award-winning Wadlata Outback Centre, where a walk through its ‘Tunnel of Time' provides the perfect introduction to this magnificent region by introducing you to the fascinating stories from the Dreamtime to the early explorers who embarked on camel-back voyages in search of an inland sea. Stay: Port Augusta, Standpipe Motel (L/D)

This morning, explore the Historic railway town of Quorn, filled with charming heritage buildings that have been a backdrop for films including Gallipoli and Wolf Creek. Traverse the Pichi Richi Pass, a heritage steam railway line. Stop for lunch at Parachilna's famous Prairie Hotel, a family-owned pub that was first licensed in 1876. Continue to the stunning Aroona Dam and admire its spectacular ochre-coloured pits, then call in at the ghost town of Farina, once a thriving community with around 600 residents, before arriving at Marree. Stay: The Marree Hotel (B/L/D)

Set off along the Oodnadatta Track towards Lake Eyre South, where you'll enjoy the dazzling salt flats subject to weather conditions. Keep an eye out for unusual creatures including the Lake Eyre dragon, as well as a variety of birdlife including corellas and wild emerald budgerigars. Afterwards, enjoy a pub lunch at William Creek and then embark on your Signature Experience.

Later, relax in the comfort of a 4WD coach whilst you travel to Munga-Thirri-Simpson Desert National Park. Witness the sun setting while enjoying drinks and nibbles and watch as nature displays its very own light show. You will spend the night in Birdsville at the famous Birdsville Hotel. Stay: Birdsville Hotel (B/L/D)

Signature Experience - Scenic Flight Over Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre Board an included scenic flight over Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, where you will be able to gain a bird's-eye view and true appreciation of this magnificent sight. Absorb the beautiful range of vibrant blue and pink hues - even when dry, the lake bed dazzles with its patchwork of geometric patterns. From this vantage point, you will see how it cuts an amazing track though the Munga-Thirri-Simpson Desert, all the way from Queensland, as you head for Poeppel Corner and the Big Red sand dune, prior to landing at Birdsville.

Depart Birdsville and follow the vast intermittent Diamantina River before returning to Marree via the eastern side of Lake Eyre North, the Cooper Creek and Lake Eyre South. Fly over the Marree Man, the largest geoglyph and work of art in the world, to this date little is known about its origin. Upon arrival, drive through the Flinders Ranges to Wilpena Pound and enjoy dinner at your hotel later this evening. Stay Two Nights: Wilpena Pound Resort (B/L/D)

This morning is yours to explore at leisure. Perhaps take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound to gain a true appreciation of this natural wonder (additional expense). Or alternatively embark on a self-guided walk to the spectacular Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheatre of mountains in the heart of the national park. After Lunch, venture into Flinders Ranges National Park and follow in the footsteps of Douglas Mawson as you spend the afternoon in the geological site of Brachina Gorge, an important refuge for the endangered yellow-footed rock wallaby.

Enrich Your Experience - Wilpena Pound Scenic Flight Perhaps take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound to gain a true appreciation of this natural wonder. (B/L/D)

After breakfast, drive to the world-renowned wine growing district of the Clare Valley. This afternoon, savour a Signature Experience. Later, return to Adelaide, where you will enjoy a Farewell Dinner at your hotel. Stay: Adelaide, The Playford (B/L/D)

Signature Experience - Dine at the Watervale Hotel Visit the highly acclaimed Watervale Hotel for a delightful meal featuring locally grown produce from the hotel organic, bio-dynamic farm in one of Australia's oldest wine regions, the Clare Valley. Lake Eyre experience 2 , NSW, Australia, Apr 2025
A wonderful experience, particularly seeing the Lake from the air as it started to fill following the Queensland floods. Our driver/guide, Kym, was very knowledgeable and professional. The local bush pilots are great and very informative. Some of the outback accommodation is challenging but that factor is well compensated by the local hospitality. read more Wilpena Pound flight is a must. Some long days on the road, but that's to be expected as we covered over 2,000 kms in a few days.
A Wonderful Holiday 2 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2022
The highlight of the holiday for us was the included plane flight to Birdsville were we had lunch then on the return trip fly over Lake Eyre. Seeing all the water come down the rivers then filling the flood planes is incredible. Then seeing the contrast of the dessert either side is amazing. Much better way to visit Birdsville than driving the Birdsville read more Track. We saw a wonderful sunrise and sunset at Marree. Our 4WD bus was comfortable and gave us a good view as we travelled on our journey.

Our additional flight over Wilpena Pound was incredible and a vast contrast to the first flight. Glad we did it. The tourist industry is still recovering from COVID and there were a few little glitches along the way but these were fixed very quickly. Everyone along the way were happy to see us and help us out. Thanks Georgie for organising this trip for us. We have already booked another trip with Global Journeys and APT.
Wonderful Outback Holiday   4 , VIC, Australia, Aug 2016
Our first APT holiday and we loved it. What a wonderful place the Outback is and to see how green it was after the recent rain was an added bonus. Lots of highlight including the scenic flight over Lake Eyre, climbing the Big Red sand dune and watching 4wd vehicles try to drive over it, staying at the iconic Birdsville Pub, driving the Birdsville and read more Strezlecki Tracks and Mungo National Park. With a couple of exceptions, the accommodation was excellent, the included meals were all really good and our tour guide Andrew was excellent. APT are not the cheapest but you do get value for money and I have no hesitation in recommending this tour.
