Itinerary

Your tour commences this evening in Norway’s capital Oslo. Join us tonight for a welcome drink before dinner. (D) Stay: Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel, Oslo

This morning we will visit Frognor Park to wander amongst hundreds of the artist Vigeland’s amazing giant sculptures. Next, on the Bygdøy peninsula, we visit the fascinating Norsk Folkemuseum where dozens of historic regional dwellings, houses, buildings and even villages have been saved, brought in and reconstructed. As a finale we visit the Museum of Cultural History.

The remainder of your day is at leisure in Oslo to explore. Perhaps take a stroll along Karl Johans Gate, the lively pedestrian mall, or visit Akershus Castle or the Royal Palace. Make sure you visit the pretty port lined with excellent cafés, bars and restaurants. (B) Stay: Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel, Oslo

After flying directly to the beautiful city of Stavanger we stop at Sverd i fjell – a massive monument of three gigantic Viking ‘Swords in the Rock’. Commemorating Norway’s unification into one kingdom in 872, they symbolise peace, unity and freedom.

Later we have ‘My Time’ exploring Stavanger’s delightful cobblestoned old town, wooden wharf and the colourful houses along the Øvre Holmegate. We stay two nights in Stavanger. (B/D) Stay: Radisson Blu Atlantic Hotel, Stavanger

As a highlight we enjoy a scenic cruise down the Lysefjord, one of Norway’s most breathtaking fjords, to the Vagabond’s Caves and one of the world’s most iconic sights – Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). For those that enjoy a good walk we have something special! Instead of taking the Pulpit Rock cruise, we can arrange for you to hike to the top and stand on that gigantic rock slab overhanging the fjord. A magnificent experience and the views on top are sensational! Your afternoon is at leisure exploring Stavanger’s cafes, shops and excellent museums. (B) Stay: Radisson Blu Atlantic Hotel, Stavanger

Our journey to Bergen today takes us along the coastal road and then inland through the spectacular landscape of mountains, glaciers and pristine fjords. We hop between lush green islands on bridges and ferries, hug the scenic shores beside deep fjords, before arriving into the famous Hanseatic city of Bergen, where we stay two nights in the heart of the old town. (B/D) Stay: Bergen Børs Hotel, Bergen, Norway

This morning we are joined by a local guide for a walking tour of this historic town and the old terraced houses of the UNESCO listed Bryggen on Vågen Harbour. We have also included a ride on the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen to take in the magnificent views over Bergen. The rest of your day is ‘My Time' – it is a pleasure exploring this historical port city. (B) Stay: Bergen Børs Hotel, Bergen, Norway

A fabulous day ahead! Catching the train, we cross the undulating hills of Vestland, through Vossevangen, to Myrdal where we ride on the world famous, scenic Flam Railway. After a stop beside the massive Kjosfossen (waterfall) we follow the picturesque valley to Flam.

Later, we take the dramatic Vikafjellsvegen high road across the Stølsheimen plateau. At Myrkdalsvegen, a photo stop for the colossal waterfall that crashes right next to a hairpin bend. Continuing, we soon reach Vik and visit the 800 year old Hopperstad Stave church, one of the oldest in Norway. Crossing the massive Sognefjord by ferry, we reach beautiful Balestrand set right on the fjord shores. This is the real Norway, far from the crowds, where we stay two peaceful nights. (B/D) Stay: Kviknes Hotel, Balestrand, Norway

A very leisurely start. A local guide will join us to take us on a short walking tour through the historic village, passing authentic wooden Swiss style character villas, small Viking mounds and a classic English church with a leprosy history. The rest of the day is entirely free in a perfect location. ‘My Time’ to relax, enjoy local walks, hire a bike or maybe visit The Cider House orchard and brewery*?*Cider House orchard and brewery is closed in September (B/D) Stay: Kviknes Hotel, Balestrand, Norway

After visiting the Fjordland Glacier Museum we enjoy a stop by the mighty Bøyabreen Glacier on the edge of the Jostedalsbreen National Park. Departing from Hellesylt we enjoy a wonderful cruise down the UNESCO listed Geiranger Fjord, passing the famous Seven Sisters waterfalls to charming Geiranger where we stay the next two nights. (B/D) Stay: Hotel Union Geiranger, Norway

This morning we drive up the Dalsnibba Pass to visit the incredible Geiranger Skywalk – Norway’s highest lookout with exceptional views across the snow covered mountain tops. Returning to Geiranger, the rest of your day is at leisure. Opposite the hotel is the Geiranger Museum and there is a waterfall walkway down into town. Maybe hike or catch a taxi up to the rustic restaurant cabin at Westerås, with its panoramic dining terrace. For the more energetic the Storseterfossen waterfalls are a must – here you can even walk on a rocky terrace inside, behind the falls. (B/D) Stay: Hotel Union Geiranger, Norway

Winding up a dozen hairpin bends of the Eagle’s Road we stop at Ørnesvingen lookout where the waterfall has been diverted over the cliff edge on a glass shelf. After a farewell look far down onto the fjord and Geiranger we then experience the zig zag walkway that snakes its way over the Gudbrandsjuvet gorge.

Next… the world famous Trollstigen or ‘Trolls Road’. From the lookouts we gaze down on the amazing hairpin bends and the route we will soon follow down the valley, and to the craggy mountains above – folklore tells us these are Trolls turned to stone by sunlight. Travelling through Elnesvågen (home of Jarlsberg cheese) we reach Bud. Here we make a fascinating visit deep down inside the WWII German artillery bunkers – an essential part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defence.

Now it is time to experience one of the world’s greatest drives as we follow the entire length of the Atlanterhavsveien – the Atlantic Ocean Road. Voted ‘the most beautiful coastal drive in the world’, this stunning route criss-crosses islands and skerries with sweeping bridges, passing incredible scenery. Later, we arrive in the old port of Kristiansund. Dinner tonight is included. (B/D) Stay: Quality Hotel Grand, Kristiansund

Your morning is at leisure in the old port town of Kristiansund before we continue north to spend the next 2 nights in the pretty city of Trondheim. (B/D) Stay: Radisson Blu Royal Garden Hotel, Trondheim

A leisurely start this morning before we walk you through Trondheim, Norway’s 3rd largest city. Dating back to the 11th century this photogenic town has colourful warehouses along the waterside, pedestrianised walkways.

This afternoon visit the striking Nidaros Cathedral – the world’s northernmost medieval cathedral. We have included entrance and a guided visit of the Cathedral, and entrance to the Archbishops Palace and Regalia (Crown Jewels Exhibition). The remainder of your afternoon and evening is free – ‘My Time’ to explore and do as little or as much as you want. (B) Stay: Radisson Blu Royal Garden Hotel, Trondheim

Crossing the Arctic Circle, we take a short flight north to Bodø (avoiding 3 days of driving!). From here we board another small aircraft for a breath-taking flight over scenic islands and skerries, into the wonderful Lofoten Archipelago. Arriving in Leknes we drive south through incredible scenery to Reine, where we stay the next three memorable nights in historic fisherman’s cabins. (B/D) Stay: Reine Rorbuer, Fisherman's Village

Here, in the most western part of the Lofoten archipelago, at the mouth of dramatic Reinefjorden, we stay in the village of Reine, set with an almost unbelievable backdrop of the majestic Lofoten peaks rising from the Arctic Ocean. After time to explore we board RIB boats (Rigid Inflatable Boats) to experience a ride to the tip of the Lofoten archipelago to see sea eagles and visit the giant Moskstraumen – the huge maelstrom whirlpool featured in Jules Verne’s ‘20,000 Leagues under the Sea’.

The rest of your day is free. ‘My Time’ to explore your sensational location, maybe on foot or hire a bike? Kayakers - you might like to join an escorted kayaking trip up the sensational, placid Reinefjorden. No experience is necessary, and it is an incredible experience! (B/D) Stay: Reine Rorbuer, Fisherman's Village

At the end of the road south we find the pretty harbour town simply called ‘Å’. This beautifully preserved village contains a number of heritage buildings, cafés, museums, shops, and the Lofoten’s oldest working bakery.

Afterwards we visit Flakstad Church, which honours the hundreds of sailors and fishermen from the local communities who have perished or been lost in the unforgiving sea. As a finale, we visit the amazing Lofotr museum with its Viking Longhouse, relics and treasures. 1,200 years ago, the Lofoten Islands were heavily populated by Vikings and this enormous Longhouse is the biggest ever discovered. A local guide will take us through the authentically reconstructed rooms, where costumed characters reenact the ancient Viking community life, before enjoying a bowl of steaming, traditional Viking soup. (B) Stay: Reine Rorbuer, Fisherman's Village

Sadly, it is time to leave these spectacular islands. This morning we make our way to Leknes Airport to board our flight to Oslo. This evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner in a local Oslo restaurant. (B/D) Stay: Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel, Oslo

Your tour ends today after breakfast. (B)

Beautiful Scandinavia   4 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2019
Firstly, dealing with Global Journeys was excellent. A big thank you to Juliet & Jodie for organising our group of 8. This was our first Albatross tour after studying their brochures for years. I had liked the sound of the smaller group size, relaxed starts, longer stays at each destination, no optional tours and tips included. Also the fact that many read more meals were included helped with budgeting. Normally they offer a drink with dinner, but that doesn’t apply on the Scandinavian tour. After seeing the price of drinks we could understand why. Expect to pay anywhere from $14 - $20 for a beer & $20 - $25 for a glass of wine!

This was a new tour for Albatross and I think with a bit of tweaking it would be fantastic. Not that we didn’t have a great time, because we did. Our fellow travellers were the best I’ve ever had on any group tour. So much fun & laughter. 24 Aussies & 3 Kiwis! We weren’t blessed with the best weather which was a bit disappointing. Scenic cruises & train rides aren’t quite the same in pouring rain! However, we did get to see some amazing waterfalls so it wasn’t all bad. The sun did come out in the Lofoten Islands which were breathtakingly beautiful. The scenery was amazing and some of the group even managed to glimpse the northern lights. The accommodation was generally good as was the food, although most meals were a set menu. It would be nice to be given a choice and it’s hard to understand why there’s not. For example, one dinner we were given roast beef & sauce so the gluten free lady in our group was given a beautiful piece of grilled salmon & veges. You would think they should be able to offer everyone the choice of beef or salmon. But that’s just a minor quibble. A couple of hotels had buffet dinners though which was nice. One thing we did miss was tea and coffee in our rooms. Some hotels provided it, others didn’t. Also some bathrooms had the shower over really high baths which some of the group found difficult to get into.

Our Spanish tour director was lovely and though she seemed a little unsure of the Aussie sense of humour at the start, by tour end she was joining in the banter as well! She went out of her way to ensure we all had a great time. It wasn’t made easy with the changeable weather or the fact many things were closed for the season. I would advise going earlier in the season if possible as some things on our itinerary were changed due to that fact. There was probably a few too many museums for my liking, but that’s just my opinion. Tips for Norway - bring a good quality raincoat and waterproof shoes and be prepared to pay a lot for food and drinks! All in all we had a wonderful, relaxing holiday and would be happy to travel with Albatross again.
Spectacular Scandinavia 2 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2019
While we were unlucky with the changeable weather, we were certainly not let down by the breathtaking scenery in Norway, and towns like Stavanger and Bergen were a delight. Among the highlights of Norway were the Lofoten Islands. The hotels were all very good, although the views from several allocated rooms were not.
Scandinavia with Albatross 12 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2019
This was our first Albatross. We felt qualified to make a fair judgement as we have done 10 tours with a variety of tour companies before. Please do not recommend this tour until at least 2021- this might give the company time to review and change many aspects to make this a good tour.

Our guide Annette had a stutter which made her difficult to read more listen to and obviously shortened her explanations. The tour offered one glass of wine on arrival and nothing after - not even on the last night. A glass of wine here and there and some aperitifs helps to develop the social side of the touring group. This group struggled to gel as there were few opportunities and no encouragement. There was also too much 'My Time' without any support or guidance.

The Hurtigurten day was up at 5 am for a flight, 2 hours in a shopping mall of no interest to anyone, followed by 2 hours waiting for the cruise to start, followed by 4 hours of cruising which was pleasant, followed by 1.5 hours to get to the accommodation. A really long day which wasn’t seen as worthwhile by our group. Lofoten islands were good but cabins varied in quality and views.

There were several in our group who had done other Albatross tours and we all felt this tour was not up to the standard it should have been. Very disappointing. Norway is a beautiful country but tour operator did not offer value in that market. I will advise against using Albatross for Scandinavia.

In contrast, our second Albatross trip - Italian Grande, taken straight after this trip was excellent. Our guide Antonia was outstanding. The trip could be seen to value the group and offered value for money. Alcohol appropriately offered and 'My Time' was well guided and supported. A fabulous trip and agreed by all in the group.
