Life’s a beach in San Diego, but we’ve places to go. Two laid-back days at sea, enjoying all that the ship has to offer, take us to Mexico and our first port of call, Puerto Vallarta, which has all the attractions of a modern resort town while still feeling authentically Mexican. We move on to Manzanillo, once used by trading ships as a shelter from pirates, and Zihuatenejo, where dolphins and turtles play in the waves, and then tick off El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica before a memorable passage along the Panama Canal.

Emerging in the Caribbean Sea, we make for Cartegena, on the coast read more of Colombia, a beautiful city that is listed by UNESCO. Enjoy lively Port Antonio in Jamaica, once the hangout of stars from the golden age of Hollywood, and explore the otherworldly salt flats at Cabo Rojo in the Dominican Republic. Pretty San Juan, Puerto Rico, comes next before we head for an overnight in Charleston, South Carolina, a city famed for its antebellum architecture. A final sea day offers time to relax before the adrenaline hits in New York City.

Itinerary

Departs: 19:00

Embrace the laidback lifestyle of this coastal Californian city, where the weather is as sunny as the dispositions of its inhabitants. There are 17 miles of pristine coastline, so pick a stretch of sand to lay your towel upon, admire cliffside views on a coastal hike, or take to the waves with a surf lesson – this is, after all, one of the world’s most renowned surfing destinations. In the heart of the city, you’ll find the 1,200-acre Balboa Park, a leafy oasis that houses multiple museums, as well as Japanese gardens and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Refuel at one of the many local taquerias or independent burger joints.

A day at sea with Crystal can be as relaxed or as engaging as you wish. Begin with breakfast on your veranda, take a walk along the Promenade Deck or spend the morning by the Seahorse Pool before retreating to the Aurōra Spa & Salon for a restorative treatment. Enrichment is always close at hand, with lectures, bridge, creative workshops, dance classes, wellness sessions and opportunities to fine tune skills from photography to golf.

Dining is a highlight throughout the day, from relaxed bites by the pool to elegant dinners at venues such as Umi Uma by Nobu, Beefbar or Waterside. As evening arrives, enjoy live music, theatre entertainment, comedy, social gatherings, cocktails in the lounges or a quiet night in with 24-hour in-suite dining.

A charming and buzzing seaside town that offers traditional Mexican culture with a modern twist. Second only to Acapulco when it comes to the Mexican Riviera's leading resort cities, Puerto Vallarta is embraced by rugged tropical mountains on one side and the lovely Banderas Bay on the other. The city brims with life, with its bougainvillea-lined cobblestone streets, picturesque alleyways, luxury hotels and smart boutiques, and stunning seaside location. Shop for leather goods here as well as shell and silver jewelry, hand-embroidered blouses or painted figures from Oaxaca.

Located on Mexico's Pacific coast, Manzanillo is a small city that derives its name from the manzanilla trees that thrived, laden with poisonous tangerine-colored fruit, beside its original wharves. Searching for Chinese treasure in the Pacific during 1522, Hernán Cortés and his minions dropped anchor in the Bay of Salagua, which is located just north of Manzanillo, while looking for safe harbors and good shipbuilding sites. Shortly thereafter navigator Alvaro de Saavedra discovered the Bay of Manzanillo and christened it Santiago de la Buena, or Santiago's Bay of Good Hope. It became a principal departure point for important expeditions and twice sheltered Cortes' galleons from marauding Portuguese pirates. Over the next 300 years, the Pacific Coast's history is filled with accounts of pirates from Portugal, England, France and even Spain assaulting, looting and burning ships for their rich cargos. In recent times, the harbor has been modernized and deepened to allow access to all major shipping lines from around the world.

Arrives: 07:00 Departs: 15:00

A-list visitors from Liz Taylor to Mick Jagger sought serenity in Zihuatanejo during the 1970s, enticed by the swaying palms and sweeping white-sand beaches lapped by warm waters. Today, this Pacific coast hotspot on the Mexican Riviera is just as popular with Mexicans for its authentic old-school charm, such as the boardwalk Paseo del Pescador where fishermen bring their catch to sell each sun-kissed morning. They also love to linger over a cafecito made from homegrown beans in the cafés along the waterfront. Look beyond the gently curving bay to the slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains – this is beachfront bliss at its best.

Unearth the charm of Acajutla, El Salvador's thriving port city, where sun-kissed Pacific beaches meet a rich history and a lively culture, crafting an extraordinary Central American experience. The seaside town of El Salvador is famous for its fishing culture and maritime heritage. In this charming town, you will be able to explore beautiful beaches, visit El Imposible National Park and taste delicious, fresh seafood dishes in the many local restaurants.

Arrives: 10:00 Departs: 18:00

San Juan del Sur, on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, woos travelers and surfers alike with its colorful, 19th-century clapboard houses and crescent of silver sand. Once a sleepy fishing village, it’s now a party town, watched over by Cristo de la Misericordia, a towering statue of Christ – hike to it up the hillside or, for a less strenuous walk, just go as far as the peach-and-white San Juan Bautista church. Microbreweries and fancy fish restaurants have joined the easygoing surf joints recently, meaning there are more spots to sip a cool craft beer or savor fresh fish tacos as the sky turns from blue to pink.

Arrives: 07:00 Departs: 17:00

Once the center of Costa Rica’s coffee-exporting boom, Puntarenas sits on a slender spit of sand that snakes into the Pacific Ocean. Still a working port, home to a charming blend of colonial buildings, chatty street vendors, and a must-visit market selling tropical fruit and handmade souvenirs, this place packs a punch. Ticos, as Costa Ricans are known, flock here to soak up the laid-back beachfront atmosphere and stroll along the promenade. The place is famed for its fresh seafood, and traditional dishes include zesty lime-drenched ceviche, best sampled at the family-run sodas, or restaurants, that line the old dock.

Panama is a cosmopolitan, dynamic city, where the modern and the traditional come together to create a cheerful and relaxed atmosphere. Three main sections make up the city, the historical ruins of the 16th century called Panama Viejo, the 17th century Spanish Colonial Casco Viejo and the modern skyscraper city.

Top Things to Do in Panama City:

  • explore Portobelo National Park
  • watch ships pass through the Panama Canal
  • shop until you drop at the Duty-Free Zone
  • ride a vintage train on the Panama Railway
Port:Fuerte Amador

Fuerte Amador, located at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal, is a man-made peninsula extending into the Pacific Ocean. The one-mile (1.6km) causeway is formed by connecting four small islands with rocks from the canal, and hosts shops and restaurants around a marina which serves as a tender dock to visiting ships. Offering panoramic views of Panama City's skyline, the causeway is also home to the Smithsonian Institute of Tropical Research. The tender dock is conveniently located, providing easy access to Panama City with a transfer time of around 25 minutes (14km/8.5mi distance).

Sailing through the legendary Panama Canal, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, brings to life the incredible potential of human achievement. Connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea, this engineering icon, which began operating in 1914, raises ships 85 feet above sea level to Gatun Lake, then lowers them at the other end. While traversing the Panama Canal, keep an eye out for monkeys and sloths in the lush surrounding jungle.

Lose yourself in the beautiful chaos of Cartagena, where layers of cultural influence intersect to create a city rich in character. The walled Old Town – established in the 16th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage site – is best explored on foot. Stop by a street stall for fresh lulo juice before setting off to explore the labyrinthine streets, filled with shady plazas, ornate former mansions, and balconies overflowing with flowers. Just outside the historic walls, you’ll find the colorful neighborhood of Getsemaní, where vivid murals adorn the facades of shops and galleries, and salsa music wafts from lively bars.

Errol Flynn called this place home in the 1950s, Tom Cruise muddled spirits here in the romantic comedy Cocktail in 1988, and Daniel Craig called by in a rare carefree moment as James Bond in No Time To Die in 2021. No wonder. This wild corner of Jamaica is framed by the beautiful Blue Mountains and its golden shores are lapped by the turquoise Caribbean. This is the gateway to the Blue Lagoon, and there are few finer sands than at Frenchman’s Cove. And kicking back with a rum punch at Geejam – a hotel with its own recording studio – listening to the house band, the famous Jolly Boys, play their mento melodies, well that’s the stuff of serious memories. Beyond the beach, go rafting on the Rio Grande River, hike in the rainforest, take a refreshing dip at Reach Falls, and learn about the Maroons at Moore Town, the fugitive slaves who escaped to form their own settlements in these hills.

This lively and picturesque town is a famous tourist destination on the island of Jamaica. Montego Bay has all you need for an idyllic experience, from sparkling blue waters, sandy beaches and diverse outdoor activities to great restaurants that showcase the best homemade Jamaican cuisine.
