You’ve seen the postcards, heard the stories, and put a bunch of iconic Aussie experiences on your ‘to do’ list. Now it’s your turn. Round up your mates for some (socially distanced!) fun and road test these new Aussie Adventures that take in the highlights of your backyard, brought to you by Contiki.

From iconic destinations like Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef to the lush green canopy of the Daintree Rainforest and the breweries of Byron Bay, there is plenty to explore right here on your doorstep. So, where in Australia can you travel on a new Aussie Adventure with Contiki?

Travelling the Whitsundays with Contiki

The Great Barrier Reef

The Sunshine State is brimming with beachside bliss and boasts one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Discover the Great Barrier Reef Highlights on a six day adventure that kicks off in the tropical paradise of Airlie Beach. Nestled in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, the 74 islands of the Whitsundays welcome you with secluded beaches ringed by crystal clear water. This itinerary includes a day trip to spellbinding Whitehaven Beach, complete with snorkelling and lunch, as well as free time to explore however you choose.

Heading north, another island adventure awaits. Magnetic Island off the Townsville coast is riddled with walking trails that wind along the beautiful shoreline and between the gum trees. Keep your eyes peeled for koalas as you stroll along, as hundreds of them call this beautiful place home. You’ll even get the chance to get up close to these cuddly locals at Bungalow Bay Koala Village. What better way to celebrate your time on ‘Maggie’ than to watch the sun set over the bay with a glass of champagne in hand. Bliss!

This six day itinerary concludes upon your return to Townsville or Cairns, depending on your preference. Not ready to say goodbye? Then perhaps opt for the longer North Queensland Adventure that combines this awesome trip with Contiki’s new three day Cairns Explorer and adds the Daintree Rainforest to your list of destinations. You’ll also get another chance to snorkel or dive the Great Barrier reef and spend some more time with the vibrant marine life of this underwater world.

Coastal trails of Noosa

The Sunshine Coast and Byron Bay

Kick back and enjoy the laid back vibes of the Sunshine Coast and Byron Bay with 11 days of Sunshine, Beaches and Breweries. There’s plenty of opportunity to connect with nature in some incredible pockets of Southern Queensland and Northern NSW, and equal opportunity to connect with your fellow travellers over a cold beer at some of the best breweries Australia has to offer.

Soak up the atmosphere of seaside Noosa, hit the local brewery trail, and then set off on a 4x4 adventure on Fraser Island. Lake Mackenzie’s clear blue waters will leave you in awe, the beaches are epic, and the sand dunes full of fun. The best part? You’ll get your own 4x4 for a self-drive adventure (don’t worry, your guide will show you all the best spots!).

Back on the mainland, you’ll enjoy a special stay at the Noosa Everglades Eco-Lodge. This is one of only two everglade systems in the world, and you can explore this incredible ecosystem on an included cruise and canoe tour. In the afternoon, perhaps enjoy a beer at the on-site microbrewery before you fall asleep to the sounds of nature in your glamping accommodation.

Coastal views, Byron Bay

Bid farewell to the Sunshine Coast and set your sights on Byron Bay and the Gold Coast for the next half of your trip. Arrive in style with a craft beer tasting at the iconic Stone and Wood Brewery in Byron Bay, followed by a full day beachside to enjoy your way. Visit The Farm just outside of town, brimming with local produce and home to a collection of micro-businesses, then take the vibe up a notch with your next stop – the Gold Coast.

Surfers Paradise is the perfect base to hit the beach or check out the theme parks before you are treated to incredible sunset views at the Q1 Skypoint. Your evening is your own to discover the local nightlife, but you’ll want to be sprightly for Lamington National Park the following day! Enjoy the soothing sounds of nature as you chill in your rainforest retreat and cross high suspension bridges on a treetop walk enveloped in the forest canopy. Dine on a picnic lunch at the Canungra Valley Vineyard, then sample the local produce and wines as you explore the valley.

If you are limited on time or just want to focus on one region, this comprehensive journey is also offered as two separate trips. If Noosa and Fraser Island are calling, then check out the Sunshine Coast Uncovered trip, or if you’re all about those Byron vibes then consider Contiki’s Byron Bay and Breweries tour.

Visiting Uluru with Contiki

The Northern Territory

The Northern Territory is home to some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes and whether you seek to explore the Top End or the Red centre you are in for a treat. Discover Darwin and the surrounding national parks on a five day Kakadu Dreaming itinerary or head to the Red Centre on the four day Uluru Explorer.

After you have explored cosmopolitan Darwin, you will head for the incredible setting of Kakadu National Park. Over two days you will get an insight into the local customs and traditions of the Aboriginal people and their connection with this timeless land. You’ll get the chance to take in the landscape from different perspectives – enjoy a Yellow Waters cruise, watch the sun set over Nadab floodplain from Ubirr lookout, and perhaps opt for a scenic flight for a birds eye view. To top things off, weave your way between the sandstone escarpments of Katherine Gorge, and enjoy a dip in the waterholes of Litchfield National Park (where it is safe to do so!).

If Uluru and the Red Centre are calling, spend four incredible days in the spiritual heart of Australia. See the impressive Field of Lights art exhibit, check out the rock formations of Kata Tjuta, hike King's Canyon, and of course marvel at the iconic monolith of Uluru. Get up early to watch sunrise light up the rockface, watch sunset over a picture perfect backdrop, and fill your time in between with incredible outback experiences.

You might want to see as much as you can in the Northern Territory on one trip. If so, take a look at the 8 day Outback Adventure which visits Kakadu and the Red centre (and more).

Coastal landscapes of Rottnest Island

Western Australia

Glamping on Rottnest Island and ample opportunity to snap a selfie with a friendly Quokka – need we say more? This slice of paradise boasts epic beaches, awesome nature trails, and lots of good vibes. The Rottnest Island Explorer spends two nights on Rottnest in plush eco-tents, so you’ve got plenty of time to soak up the surrounds. Explore at your own pace by foot or by bike, or join one of the optional activities on offer including skydiving, a seafood lunch cruise, or a helicopter ride over the island.

Starting and finishing in Perth, you can also check out WA’s capital and nearby Fremantle on this five day guided tour. If you’re hungry for more, consider the eight day Rottnest Island & Margaret River itinerary which continues south to indulge your palate in another stunning region.

Check out Busselton’s expansive jetty on route, then make laid back Dunsborough your base from which to explore the Margaret River region rich in food, wine, culture and beaches. Highlights here are sure to include the Kaya Cape experience that showcases the deep connection the indigenous Wadandi people have with the area, a tour of Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, and a group BBQ dinner with your Contiki family.

Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Southern Australia

Adelaide is a cultural hub with streets steeped in historic charm and brimming with delightful eateries. It is also the gateway to the Barossa Valley wine region and neighbouring Kangaroo Island, both of which you can visit on Contiki’s South Australia Wineries and Wilderness trip.

Start this five day itinerary with a walking tour of Adelaide to get acquainted with the city. Once you have your bearings, you can explore at your own pace or join one of Contiki’s optional tours. Perhaps tantalise your tastebuds with a Peel Street dinner experience or set off into wine country with a day trip to the Barossa Valley complete with a wine tour and tastings.

Next stop, Kangaroo Island. Spend two days in this paradise teeming with wildlife, from dolphins and seals to the locals of the koala park. How you spend your time here is up to you; hit the walking trails, kayak, or quad bike around the island. You will also get the chance to visit a local winery, go sandboarding at Little Sahara, and check out the natural landscapes of Seal Bay Beach and Flinders Chase.

Perfect as a stand alone adventure for those short on time, these experiences can also be combined with a Great Ocean Road Trip starting in Melbourne and taking in the iconic sights along the way, including the 12 Apostles. You will get to check out Apollo Bay and Mt Gambier (and much more!) before arriving into Adelaide where your wineries and wilderness experiences await.
