Overview

Sail the Mediterranean Sea to the shores of Africa. Immerse yourself in the fabled architecture of Barcelona and the Andalusian charm of Granada. See prosperous Casablanca and the vibrant West African city of Dakar, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Visit coastal Recife and revel in the exuberance of the former Brazilian capital, Rio de Janeiro. Discover the eclectic cities of Montevideo and Buenos Aires, and engage in European-influenced Latin culture.

Itinerary

Step on board your ship to begin your journey. Your overnight stay allows time to discover Barcelona on your own. Enjoy an evening stroll down the city's celebrated Las Ramblas boulevard. Admire the architecture of native son Antoni Gaudí.

Awake in Barcelona and further explore the Catalonian capital. Start on Las Ramblas, the mile-long leafy pedestrian boulevard. Or take a turn through the myriad side streets of the Gothic Quarter, where the ancient and the modern sit side by side, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Or head to the Passeig de Gràcia, a boulevard renowned for its architecture including works by Antoni Gaudí. You may also choose from one of the many optional tours.

During your final day at sea, indulge yourself in the serene Wintergarden. Sample global teas or sip a pint from our craft beer selections. Or, visit The Library to read more about your favorite destinations.

Today you can experience firsthand the stuff of Andalusian dreams. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Málaga is the gateway to Andalusia, the seductive province of rolling hills and endless olive groves. An included tour features the 11th-century Alcazaba Palace, residence of Arabian caliphs, the ancient Moorish Gibralfaro Castle, the Renaissance Cathedral and Picasso's birthplace. Or, choose to explore the mighty Alhambra palace in Granada, one of Spain's most treasured sites.

Steeped in romance, Casablanca lures visitors with its heady mix of neo-Moorish splendor and French influence. Known as 'Casa' to locals, its streets exude an atmosphere of bygone days. Made famous by the 1942 eponymous film, today it is one of Africa's most important ports. Parisian-style boulevards unfold past cafés and colonial buildings. Perhaps the most prominent legacy of French occupation is the massive white Casablanca Cathedral, a neo-Moorish masterwork built in 1930 for European Roman Catholics. The city's medina is a maze of warrens pulsing with old-world energy, the hollers of carpet merchants and the fragrance of incense. The most impressive structure is the Hassan II Mosque, the country's largest and most magnificent.

Perhaps renew your body and spirit in our Scandinavian-inspired Spa, a Nordic sanctuary of holistic wellness, today while we are at sea. Indulge in a soothing massage, facial or body treatment.

During your sea day, you might sign up for a destination-themed cooking class. The Kitchen Table's onboard cooking school lets you experience firsthand how our ships' world-class culinary staff brings distinct, local flavors from market to table.

Sail across the Atlantic Ocean as you continue to explore Africa. Choose from a selection of travel-inspired literature from The Library as you head toward your next destination.

Senegal's capital on the western tip of Africa is a bustling, lively and colorful city with wonderful beaches, busy markets and a bit of French flair. Explore Dakar and its highlights, including the African Renaissance Monument, a bronze statue that is the tallest in Africa, created to commemorate Senegal's independence from France. Explore its beautiful corniche and seaside promenade, and take in the views as you enjoy the ocean breeze. Visit the island of Gorée, where slaves were held before being dispatched to the New World, sending thousands of people across the waters. Today it serves as a reminder of its troubled past, and as a sanctuary that promotes reconciliation and peace.

Start your day with a walk around the Promenade Deck; once around measures ¼ mile. Later, you might indulge in a manicure or pedicure at The Salon and enjoy a first-run or classic movie in The Theater, popcorn included. Tonight, enjoy an elegant meal in The Restaurant.

As you cruise today, perhaps you will relax and enjoy the amenities of your stateroom, with its private veranda and beautifully designed, streamlined Scandinavian interior. Indulge in a morning cup of coffee on your veranda, with the majestic sea as a backdrop, or unwind on the couch with your favorite book.

Spend another relaxing day cruising Atlantic waters. As you sail, you might take in an illuminating enrichment lecture or enjoy a cocktail in the Explorers' Lounge.

Perhaps you will get a morning workout at the Fitness Center and soothe your body with a hot sauna and a few minutes amid the refreshingly chilled air of the Snow Grotto. This evening, enjoy cocktails in the Explorers' Lounge and an authentic Italian meal at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant.

Discover the colonial architecture that remains in Recife Antigo, the old city, and see how this colorful heart of the vibrant coastal metropolis delights its visitors with winding streets full of cafés, shops and restaurants. See the opulently decorated baroque churches, the New World's oldest synagogue, and the former provincial stock exchange, now converted to a marketplace for artisans. Nearby Olinda, one of the oldest cities in Brazil, is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its beautiful architecture and exceptional parks.

During today's sail, we invite you to experience the serenity of the Wintergarden. Under an elegant canopy of Scandinavian trellised wood, you can enjoy afternoon tea service.

As you cruise the South Atlantic, enjoy refreshments in the Explorers' Lounge and mingle with fellow travelers, and share your experiences.

The Cidade Maravilhosa, or 'Marvelous City,' is blessed with a stunning setting so unique that UNESCO gave it World Heritage Site status. Gaze at the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue perched atop Corcovado mountain and admire the azure-blue waters as they lazily wash the sun-kissed beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Take a cable car to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain and marvel at the panoramic vistas below.

As you cruise the South Atlantic, enjoy refreshments in the Explorers' Lounge and mingle with fellow travelers, and share your experiences.

Relax on board as you learn more about your upcoming destinations during an intriguing port talk, and explore your ship. Unwind in The Spa, where you can enjoy the Snow Grotto and Sauna, or by taking a dip in the Infinity Pool. Experience the serenity of the Wintergarden, where you can enjoy afternoon tea service under an elegant canopy of Scandinavian trellised wood. At night, try a regional specialty in The Restaurant, or take in a recent movie in one of our three theaters—two indoor and one under the stars at the Main Pool.

Uruguay's capital city boasts perhaps the highest quality of living of any city in South America. Rich in parks, sweeping vistas and architectural styles, Montevideo is blessed with a subtropical climate, guaranteeing warm summers and mild winters. A panoramic tour features highlights such as the Legislative Palace, a grand neoclassical building, the Ciudad Vieja, or Old Town, and the Batlle y Ordóñez Park with the iconic La Caretta Monument. Or enjoy an overland tour to marvel at nature at the magnificent Iguazú Falls.

Be captivated by the bohemian flair of La Boca, marvel at the grand homes of Recoleta, one of the finest quarters of the city, and discover the many facets of Buenos Aires. This evening, take in a romantic melodies of tango during a show complete with singers, dancers and a tango orchestra while enjoying dinner.

Disembark your ship this morning as your journey comes to a close, or extend your stay in Buenos Aires.

Lovely Viking cruise 7 , SA, Australia, Jun 2019
We recently travelled on the Viking Jupiter from Bergen, Norway to Greenwich, London. Our cruise ship was almost brand new, we had a very spacious room, staff were lovely and friendly, meals of very good quality. The scenery along the coast of Norway was stunning.

The optional excursions in each port were a little disappointing, not a lot to see ...read more or do in some of the ports and we had to use tender boats in most of the ports which was quite annoying. All in all though, a very good cruise, would definitely recommend doing a Viking cruise. Yvonne from Global Journeys organised our tour, she did a great job.
