Walvis Bay is the principal port of Namibia and is situated on the west coast of southern Africa - a quirky town focused around the busy harbour with many townspeople employed in the huge fishing and shipping industry that operates out of it.

One of the most unique and interesting aspects of Walvis Bay is it's huge natural lagoon. This always has numerous seabirds on and around it. Over 100,000 birds were counted on the lagoon, the most noticeable being flamingos and pelicans. These are joined annually by another 200,000 migratory birds, making this an excellent place for keen birdwatchers.

Richards Bay, situated on the northeastern coast of South Africa in KwaZulu-Natal, is renowned for its vast waterfront and deep-water port, one of the country’s largest. This bustling hub is not only vital for coal exports but also serves as a gateway to the region's rich natural landscapes and wildlife reserves. The nearby uMkhuze Game Reserve is part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering sightings of rhinos, elephants, and a variety of bird species.

For those who enjoy the sea, Alkantstrand Beach provides golden sands and warm waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. The city’s waterfront areas are perfect for leisurely strolls, revealing views of the large industrial ships and tranquil sea, illustrating the unique blend of industry and nature.

Mossel Bay, positioned along South Africa’s Garden Route, is a coastal town with a deep historical significance, often cited as the first place Europeans set foot on South African soil. The Dias Museum Complex commemorates this moment with the Maritime Museum and the iconic Post Office Tree, a centuries-old milkwood tree used by Portuguese navigators as a mail collection point.

The natural beauty of Mossel Bay is striking, with the Indian Ocean providing a stunning backdrop for a variety of water-based activities. Its mild climate makes it a year-round destination for beachgoers and those interested in shark-cage diving and whale watching. The blend of history and natural beauty ensures that Mossel Bay offers a rich, immersive experience for all who visit.

Delightful cruise visiting many ancient historical sites   5 , NSW, Australia, Jul 2023
A most enjoyable 10-day cruise to places of historical significance. Our favourite place in Turkiye was Istanbul where we spent an extra couple of days in order to take in the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Basilica Cistern and Sirkeci Station, the old terminus of the Orient Express. Bodrum in Turkiye, particularly the Castle and Museum read more of Underwater Archaeology, gave an insight into how ancient cultures dominated the area over the centuries. We also got an interesting demonstration of Turkish carpet weaving. In Ephesus we learned the origins of the Nike fashion brand name and logo.

The highlights of Greece were the tours through the island of Syros and its narrow streets only accessible by donkey and through the islands of Santorini & Mykonos with their windmills and numerous other tourists. In Athens we enjoyed the tour to the Acropolis as well as watching the changing of the guard outside the Parliament House. All this was done whilst temperatures reached the mid 40's C and preceded the evacuation of some islands due to bush fires after our cruise.

Oceania Cruises was well organised with a good itinerary, good food and reasonably priced excursions. The Nautica is a comfortable ship with a quality feel about it and we would definitely sail with them again. And finally Global Journeys and Georgie Walpole were very helpful and great to deal with throughout the booking process.
