Walvis Bay is the principal port of Namibia and is situated on the west coast of southern Africa - a quirky town focused around the busy harbour with many townspeople employed in the huge fishing and shipping industry that operates out of it.
One of the most unique and interesting aspects of Walvis Bay is it's huge natural lagoon. This always has numerous seabirds on and around it. Over 100,000 birds were counted on the lagoon, the most noticeable being flamingos and pelicans. These are joined annually by another 200,000 migratory birds, making this an excellent place for keen birdwatchers.
In Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth), cruise ships dock at the Port of Ngqura, which is roughly 20 kilometres (about 12.4 miles) from the city centre of Gqeberha, a 20-minute drive away. Transport services are readily available for those travelling into the city or to nearby attractions.
Gqeberha offers a pleasant blend of urban and natural attractions, including the beautiful beaches along Algoa Bay and the historic Donkin Reserve. The highlights of Greece were the tours through the island of Syros and its narrow streets only accessible by donkey and through the islands of Santorini & Mykonos with their windmills and numerous other tourists. In Athens we enjoyed the tour to the Acropolis as well as watching the changing of the guard outside the Parliament House. All this was done whilst temperatures reached the mid 40's C and preceded the evacuation of some islands due to bush fires after our cruise.
Oceania Cruises was well organised with a good itinerary, good food and reasonably priced excursions. The Nautica is a comfortable ship with a quality feel about it and we would definitely sail with them again. And finally Global Journeys and Georgie Walpole were very helpful and great to deal with throughout the booking process.
