Overview

Join Viking on a singular journey that spans continents. Discover the cultural legacies of the emerald-green island of St. Martin. Tour the garden island of Madeira with a Portuguese local. Step into Spain’s remarkable past in Seville and Valencia as residents share their passion for these magnificent cultural centers. And cruise a quartet of legendary waters: the Caribbean, Atlantic, Strait of Gibraltar and Mediterranean.

Itinerary

Arrive in San Juan to embark your ship today. This afternoon before our departure, you will have time to explore El Viejo San Juan, or Old San Juan, with its seductive colonial charms, easy island tempo and authentic culture. Wander its narrow lanes, literally paved with history, laid with blue adoquín stone once used to ballast Spanish galleons.

St. Martin is a fascinating mix of France and Holland and the island has been shared by the two nations since 1648. The early economy relied on cotton, tobacco, salt and sugar. A large salt pond remains, once harvested by the Dutch East India Company for trade. Today, the Dutch side of the island, anchored by its capital, Philipsburg, is dotted with resorts and casinos. The renowned Rotary Lookout Point offers stunning panoramic views of the Simpson Bay Lagoon and surrounding islands. Further north, the 1.5-mile swath of white sand at Orient Beach is ideal for sunbathing.

As you sail eastward into the Atlantic, take advantage of the many amenities of your ship. You might find your inner calm with yoga on the Sports Deck. Lounge by the Main Pool with its retractable roof and enjoy a cocktail at the Aquavit Bar.

Relax to the rhythm of your trans-Atlantic crossing. During your second day at sea, you might indulge in a massage or facial or take a sauna in The Spa. Tonight, try some food and wine pairings at The Chef's Table.

Begin your day with coffee and a real Norwegian waffle at Mamsen's gourmet deli. Later, perhaps you will swim in the Infinity Pool or mingle with newfound friends over tea in the Wintergarden. This evening, enjoy soft piano music in the Living Room or lively jazz in Torshavn.

Perhaps you will get a morning workout at the Fitness Center and soothe your body with a hot sauna and a few minutes amid the refreshingly chilled air of the Snow Grotto. In the evening, enjoy cocktails in the Explorers' Lounge and an authentic Italian meal at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant.

Start your day with a walk around the Promenade Deck; once around measures ¼ mile. Later, you might indulge in a manicure or pedicure at The Salon and enjoy a first-run or classic movie in The Theater, popcorn included. Tonight, enjoy an elegant meal in The Restaurant.

As you approach Europe, you might attend an illuminating enrichment lecture about an upcoming destination in The Theater. Relax in The Viking Living Room with a complimentary espresso and a good book from our thoughtfully curated Library.

Arrive in Europe today on Portuguese Madeira, often called the 'Garden Island' for its rich agriculture, terraced hillsides and beautiful flowers. Disembark to witness this beguiling paradise of craggy peaks and dramatic rocky coasts during a mountain drive. Alternately, you can explore Funchal. This grand capital exudes all the historic air of Lisbon with its harborside Old Town, iron balconies and blue azulejo tiles. There will be time to explore its inviting cobblestone streets.

After your exploration of Madeira, you might sample the Madeira wine that is produced on the island during your day cruising the Atlantic. You can also learn about your upcoming port, Cádiz, Spain, during a lecture. Tonight, choose from one of our fine dining venues.

Cádiz lies on Spain's breathtaking province of Andalusia and gained incredible wealth during the 18th century; riches from the Americas were unloaded here after the Guadalquivir River to Seville silted up. This scenic southern region is home the matador and world-class equestrian art. Seville, city of polyamorous suitor Don Juan, boasts plenty of its own glories. Its grand cathedral, Alcázar Palace and Tower of Gold were built from the coffers of Spanish kings, but its fiery flamenco defines its true spirit. It is best to ponder it all while sipping sherry at a bodega.

Sail the gateway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Its defining landmark, the soaring Rock of Gibraltar, was one of the Pillars of Hercules of ancient myth. As you sail, explore our well-curated library, tucked in a private alcove of The Living Room, and select from a broad range of titles. Read a book by the Main Pool, a calming oasis in any weather with its retractable roof, allowing for year-round swimming.

Valencia is steeped in 2,000 years of history and culture. Its Old Town is one of Spain's largest, a diverse medley of ancient buildings, wide-open plazas and cultural monuments. The Gothic Silk Exchange, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bears witness to Valencia's Renaissance trading power. A literal taste of Valencia's past bubbles up in every skillet of paella. The centuries-old rice dish was invented here and perfected by farmers; barracas throughout the city offer demonstrations and tastings of this famously rustic cuisine.

Arrive in Barcelona today, Spain's marvel of architectural wonders. Disembark your ship this morning to return home, or you can extend your stay here to absorb the city's laid-back culture.

Wonderful cruise with Viking 1 , Queensland , Australia, Aug 2023
Our first Viking ocean cruise and we were not disappointed! Everything was amazing, from the staff, to the ship facilities, to the included tours. Being a smaller ship with only 930 was so much nicer than sailing on the huge liners with thousands of passengers. No kids is also a bonus! For us it was well worth the money we paid. We left the ship with ...read more not a bill to pay as everything was included. Of course there are optional tours and drinks outside of lunch and dinner that cost extra, but we didn’t opt for those. We booked the lowest category cabin which certainly met our needs. All cabins include verandahs and our cabin was a decent size. We don’t tend to spend much time in our cabin anyway as we often travel in a group.

The great thing is that there are self serve laundry facilities which meant we could leave the ship with clean clothes for the next part of our 10 week journey through Europe. The service onboard was wonderful and the staff couldn’t do enough for us and always with a smile. In fact, the day of disembarkation, our transfer wasn’t until 1pm so we were invited to stay onboard in the public areas and even given lunch whilst the next group of passengers were embarking. The only negative, although no one’s fault, was the weather. It was so hot!! Europe was having a heatwave this year. So in future we would probably not leave home as early as we did (end of August). Maybe 3 weeks later would have been ideal. Many thanks to Georgie for organising our cruises (we also did Viking’s France’s Finest river cruise). She was always available for any queries we had and always prompt with the replies. 😃
Cruising the Dalmation Coast 0 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2023
Well organised cruise. Loved the talks and entertainment was excellent on board. Port guides and tours were excellent and boarding and disembarking procedures were also well organised. The only down side experienced was the ship was a little too cold outside our cabin and we needed to wear a jacket when we exited.
Great Med Cruise   2 , QLD, Australia, Nov 2022
A great cruise on a fantastic ship. We booked excursions and went off the ship every day - we probably should have taken a day or two to relax, but there was so much to do. Make sure you bring comfortable sneakers, as you will do a lot of walking. I was in the spa and sauna every day, as it was a great way to wake up and recharge after being out in ...read more the European autumn (~5-10°C). Overall, I had an incredible time on the cruise and highly recommend it to anyone. I can't wait to go on another Viking cruise. Make sure you order the strip steak from the World Cafe - it's the ship's best-kept secret.
Cruising the Caribbean in Comfort and Style 42 , QLD, Australia, Mar 2018
As a first experience of ocean cruising, Viking has probably spoilt us for a number of other lines. While not a small ship (~900 passengers), we did not encounter the congestion that we imagine happens in much larger ships. The stateroom was lovely, the bathroom larger than expected and very functional, with plenty of storage for everything.

Dining ...read more options were varied and all very good. Most notably, the tasting menus at The Chef’s Table, which we booked three times, were absolutely exquisite. All the included extras (shore excursions, drinks and wifi) as well as the “no casino, no kids” policy made a positive difference.

The “Viking Sea” is only 2 years old and is decorated in sleek and simple Scandinavian style, featuring beautiful Scandinavian artworks. The ship is spotlessly clean, and one of the highlights was the exceptional quality of all the onboard staff, who were friendly, helpful, engaging, and always happy to have a chat. Viking must have an impressive staff training program.

Our itinerary for the 11 day cruise was a busy one and the included shore excursions were all excellent and very well organised. We visited 9 different islands, with different history, scenery and cultures, shown to us by excellent local guides, and all were both beautiful and fascinating.

The days when we did additional optional excursions were very busy, but we especially loved the French Cooking Class with a local chef in Saint Martin. We were sad to see the lingering devastation of cyclones going back a number of years on all the islands. I would recommend this cruise to others and I am sure that we will travel with Viking again in future.
