Overview

Delve into Mediterranean treasures and enjoy a tranquil mid-Atlantic sojourn when you combine Western Mediterranean Explorer and Transatlantic Crossing on one enriching 27-day voyage. Immerse yourself in Tuscany's splendors, picturesque Marseille, stunning Spain and historic Lisbon. Relax amid Atlantic waters, calling on the lush Azores and pastel-hued Bermuda en route to vibrant Miami. Overnights in Barcelona, Lisbon and Bermuda help you explore fully.

Itinerary

Step on board to begin your journey. The ship will be berthed in Civitavecchia, the closest port to the airport and Rome. Relax and settle in to your stateroom, perhaps also unwinding at our Infinity Pool.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Tuscany with an included, well-curated tour of Pisa. Alternatively, enjoy a full-day tour that combines Pisa and Florence. Begin with a scenic drive through the countryside to Florence, where you will stroll by the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. Then on to the medieval Ponte Vecchio and the attractive Basilica di Santa Croce, resting place of Michelangelo. In Pisa, you will have time to explore the Square of Miracles, including the famous Leaning Tower, the Cathedral and Baptistery.

Enjoy a full day in Monaco, the playground for the rich and famous, as well as the gateway to the beautiful South of France. Visit medieval Monaco, stopping at the Prince's Palace and St. Nicholas Cathedral, the burial site of the royal family, including American actress Grace Kelly. You will have time to step inside the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the most prestigious and celebrated gambling mecca on Earth. As an option, venture out of town to the legendary perfumeries in Grasse, or stroll along the English promenade in glamorous Nice.

Visit Marseille, France's oldest city, rich in timeless treasures. Discover its atmospheric Old Port, overseen by two 17th-century fortresses. The picturesque quay was built on the order of Louis XII and Louis XIII and is one of the world's most romantic walks. As you explore, take in the beauty of its natural harbor, dotted with elegant yachts. Marvel at the church of Notre Dame de la Garde and Palais Longchamp, or venture to Aix-en-Provence with its tree-shaded squares and wide boulevards.

Explore Montpellier today, a center of learning for centuries. Its namesake university, founded in 1160, is one of the world's oldest, predating the Renaissance. The social and cultural center of Montpellier is the Place de la Comédie, anchored by the elegant Three Graces fountain and the stunning, neoclassical Opéra Comédie. Other sites pay tribute to a rich heritage, from the art-filled Musée Fabre and impressive St. Clement Aqueduct to the St. Pierre Cathedral with its 'floating' porch supported by a pair of towers.

Soak up the charm of sunny Barcelona, the Catalonian capital of culture. Stroll along Las Ramblas, take in the architectural masterpieces of Antoni Gaudí or explore the myriad side streets of the ancient Gothic Quarter. Take an included tour today, or opt for one of the many optional shore excursions we offer.

Awake in Barcelona and further explore the Catalonian capital. Start on Las Ramblas, the mile-long leafy pedestrian boulevard. Or take a turn through the myriad side streets of the Gothic Quarter, where the ancient and the modern sit side by side, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Or head to the Passeig de Gràcia, a boulevard renowned for its architecture including works by Antoni Gaudí. You may also choose from one of the many optional tours.

Spain's Mediterranean port of Valencia is a mecca for lovers of one of the country's most iconic dishes, paella. Choose from a wide array of variations of the dish at restaurants throughout town, perhaps with a glass of local wine. Or sample the city's other specialty, horchata. You'll also want to visit the famous Lladró porcelain factory, world renowned for its imaginative and delicate figurines.

Uncover the rich history of Cartagena today, brimming with remarkable architecture spanning the ages—from the days of Rome to art nouveau. Outside the city, marvel at the beauty of the sanctuary of the Virgin of Fuensanta, Murcia's patron saint, and the baroque- and Gothic-style cathedral. Alternately, explore Cartagena's impressive Roman Theater and Roman Forum.

Today you can experience firsthand the stuff of Andalusian dreams. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Málaga is the gateway to Andalusia, the seductive province of rolling hills and endless olive groves. An included tour features the 11th-century Alcazaba Palace, residence of Arabian caliphs, the ancient Moorish Gibralfaro Castle, the Renaissance Cathedral and Picasso's birthplace. Or, choose to explore the mighty Alhambra palace in Granada, one of Spain's most treasured sites.

At today's port, you'll have a rare chance to explore what many considered the gateway to the New World for all the voyages that left here for unknown shores. The port of Cádiz offers a wealth of treasures. On an included tour, you'll follow passageways into elaborate plazas. Stop at the Torre Tavira, once a lookout for merchants, and marvel at the city's baroque, gold-domed cathedral. Alternately, explore the colorful city of Seville, where a grand Cathedral, Giralda Tower and the Alcázar Palace were built by the wealth of Spanish kings. Spend free time sipping sherry at a bodega or shopping for local wares.

With its stunning setting at the Tagus River's mouth, Lisbon has inspired explorers for centuries. The labyrinthine streets of the Arab-flavored Alfama District carry echoes of 16th-century navigators who sailed on the winds of the Age of Discovery. The city prospered greatly from its trade and today's streets are lined with legacies of wealthy builders, including the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, stunning works that introduced Manueline architecture to the world. Also on the Tagus, the grand Monument to the Discoveries stares out to sea, reminding us of Lisbon's courageous captains whose spirit continues to shape their vibrant city. Your overnight stay in Portugal allows ample time to explore this city on your own.

Today, explore the labyrinthine streets of Lisbon's Alfama District and the 12th-century Sé Cathedral (Lisbon Cathedral). On an included panoramic tour of this seafaring capital, you will also trace the Tagus River to the Elevador da Gloria, a funicular train that takes you to the hilltop suburb of Bairro Alto. Soak up magical views and shop the lively Chiado Quarter. Or, consider an excursion through the countryside to Sintra, renowned for its multi-hued palaces and stalwart castles. You can also choose an excursion to see Lisbon's architectural masterpieces, including the ornate Jerónimos Monastery and the adjacent Belém Tower, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As we are docked here overnight, you will have plenty of time to enjoy dinner in town.

Enjoy another day in Lisbon, and perhaps take an included or optional tour today.

As you sail westward into the Atlantic, take advantage of the many amenities of your ship. You might attend an enriching onboard talk to learn about your upcoming ports. Lounge by the Main Pool with its retractable roof and enjoy a cocktail at the Aquavit Bar.

Start your day with a walk around the Promenade Deck; once around measures ¼ mile. Later, you might indulge in a manicure or pedicure at The Salon and enjoy a first-run or classic movie in The Theater, popcorn included. Tonight, enjoy an elegant meal in The Restaurant.

Call on the capital of the Azores, Ponta Delgada, once a staging post for explorers continuing their voyage to the New World. Today, the cultural center of the island of São Miguel hosts impressive churches and tidy white houses that recall its supporting role in the Age of Discovery. Sample the culinary traditions of the island during your visit as you set out into its rural reaches. Alternately, marvel at Portugal's famed 'lake of two colors' or explore Ponta Delgada by tuk-tuk.

Enjoy another day in the Azores, with a stop at the picturesque island of Terceira. It is home to charming Angra—the oldest city and historic capital of the Azores, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the northeast lies Praia da Vitória, whose historic city center is composed of narrow streets and alleys lined with brightly hued residences, shops and historic buildings displaying a range of architectural styles. Terceira is also home to the Azores Air Zone Command, shared by both the Portuguese and United States air forces since 1945.

Relax to the rhythm of your trans-Atlantic crossing. During your second day at sea, you might indulge in a massage or facial or take a sauna in The Spa. Tonight, try some food and wine pairings at The Chef's Table.

Begin your day with coffee and a real Norwegian waffle at Mamsen's gourmet deli. Later, perhaps you will swim in the Infinity Pool or mingle with newfound friends over tea in the Wintergarden. This evening, enjoy soft piano music in the Living Room or lively jazz in Torshavn.

Perhaps you will get a morning workout at the Fitness Center and soothe your body with a hot sauna and a few minutes amid the refreshingly chilled air of the Snow Grotto. In the evening, enjoy cocktails in the Explorers' Lounge and an authentic Italian meal at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant.

As you approach the Caribbean once again, you might attend an illuminating enrichment lecture about an upcoming destination in The Theater. Relax in The Living Room with a complimentary espresso and a good book from our thoughtfully curated Library.

You will dock in the heart of Hamilton, the capital and cultural center of the British Territory of Bermuda. Breathtaking pink-sand beaches and a distinct English flavor greet you at every turn as you walk the pastel-hued streets, tour the historic town of St. George, the longest continuously inhabited English settlement in the New World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore the island's old garrison.

You have today to discover more of Bermuda on an optional excursion or on your own. You have seven major islands to explore, and countless beaches to relax on. On the South Shore, you can visit idyllic Horseshoe Bay. Journey to the pink-sand Warwick Long Bay. Or join the locals in their Bermuda shorts on one of the many golf courses.

Today you will trace the coast toward the southern reaches of Florida. As you cruise, you can enjoy a cultural enrichment lecture on board, take a dip in the Infinity Pool or treat yourself to a spa treatment, perhaps a massage or a pedicure.

Disembark your ship today and depart for home, or extend your stay in Miami and take in the city's lively Cuban-American culture and fresh cuisine, plus the vibrant art deco architecture of South Beach.

Viking Homelands 11 , WA, Australia, Aug 2019
We were so impressed with our recent ocean cruise onboard the Viking Sky. We boarded the ship on 25th August to do The Viking Homelands, and loved everything about the whole journey. The Baltic offers so much in scenery, culture and history in a compact area and charming ports along the way. We love the mid-size ships and there was no hassles or queues getting off or on, the organisation was well done. We were blessed with wonderful weather everywhere which even Viking couldn’t have planned, only two showers in the whole two weeks, so all the warm clothing and raincoats were hardly needed. Viking Ocean cruising ... hard to fault 12 , QLD, Australia, Aug 2019
Thanks Jemma at Global Journeys for all the work to get us on this fabulous trip. The planning and documentation phases were perfect - as was the trip. We had travelled on a Viking river cruise before - so felt confident of our choice for Viking for an ocean cruise. Wow - the Viking ocean performance was absolutely fantastic in every aspect - from the ...read more pick up at the airport, including porters for our luggage to our cabins, to an outstanding itinerary, marvellous staff, food, entertainment and variety of shore excursions. The itinerary was amazing - taking in small and large ports with amazing scenery and activities onshore.

Iceland was amazing and provided stunning scenery. The trip to the Golden Triangle was well worthwhile as an optional extension trip. The days at sea between Iceland and the Faroes and Faroes to Norway were relaxing and filled with interesting activities. Faroe Islands also had much to offer and the stop at Torshavn and included tour gave a real insight into the life of this remote place. The 4 stops in Norway were also lovely and the trips to Geiranger and Flam were excellent with great shore excursions by coaches winding up amazingly steep mountains with spectacular views.

Everything about the trip and Viking was excellent - so much so that we've booked another Viking ocean cruise for next year. Viking has spoilt us for all other cruise lines and we won't be looking further when seeking a company for our future cruising holidays. Thanks Jemma and Viking for a memorable and wonderful time.
