A Journey Across The Mediterranean’s Edge & Into The Atlantic

Overview

Begin in Rome before Naples and Palermo introduce southern Italy’s layered character, followed by Tunis and Algiers, where North African culture reshapes the journey’s perspective. Returning briefly to Spain, Cartagena and Barcelona offer a familiar rhythm before turning south once more to Tangier and Casablanca. The route then opens into the Atlantic, where volcanic landscapes and quieter island life unfold across the Canaries and Madeira. Concluding in Lisbon, the journey traces a gradual shift from enclosed seas to open ocean horizons.

Itinerary

There's more to Rome than its ancient architecture. The Eternal City is home to a seemingly endless array of hidden gems. The artistic-minded can enjoy fashion aristocracy, street art, vespa jaunts to The Appian Way and toss coins into fountains. Or you can stroll by appointment to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel and the Pope's private quarters at the Vatican.

Explore the historic ruins of The Colosseum, Caravaggio churches, the Spanish Steps and The Pantheon. Learn how to make pasta the true Italian way, hunt truffles, nibble gelato, sip coffee and sink into a 3000 year old pool for a wellness experience. An ode to homespun pasta at a Renaissance piazza. When in Rome, fusing old with new makes it simple to indulge in whatever you like.

Pitched between mighty Mount Vesuvius and the volcanic calderas of Phlegraean Fields, history is revealed around every corner of Naples, cradle of Italian culture. Baroque churches, Italian-Renaissance palazzi and Neoclassical opera houses leave you breathless, so ride the funicular up to the top of Castel Sant'Elmo for dreamy views of the Bay of Naples and Sorrento Peninsula beyond, gateway to the spectacular Amalfi Coast. Beneath the cobblestone streets lies another Naples, a warren of subterranean tunnels hewn by legions of Roman and Greek settlers. Linger longer to visit the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, buried under the wrath of Mount Vesuvius, or hop over to the idyllic Island of Capri.

Be drawn into a balmy blend of olive-strewn landscapes, starkly beautiful Greek temples, Byzantine mosaics, and ricotta-filled farm-to-table delights. Wander Palermo's ficus-filled streets as you tour through the Florio family tale. Taste wine through a patchwork of fertile vineyards below rumbling giant Mount Etna and talented Teatro Greco, Sicily's most dolce vita hill town.

Take in noble UNESCO heritage sites, tour leafy Villa Tasca, marvel medieval mosaic masterpieces at Monreale or Cefalù and continue the Greek theme to visit tumbled ruins and secluded temples. Welcome Baroque brilliance, Aztec chocolate, and modern-day charms in Sicily's honey-hued deep south towns. From Michelin-starred temple dining to Trapani beaches and fishermen mending nets outside hipster bars - such contrasts are at the soul of this irresistible island.

Whitewashed buildings have welcomed seafarers to Tunis, gateway to North Africa, since time immemorial. Elegant mosaics carved wooden doorways and intricately tiled courtyards lurk around every corner of the ancient medina (old town), a warren of labyrinthine souks, white-domed mosques and beautiful madrassas (Islamic schools) with their iconic black and white archways and cool arcades.

French influence is palpable in the Ville Nouveau, where wide boulevards lined with eucalyptus lead to the monumental expanse of St. Vincent de Paul Cathedral. Don't miss the ancient Phoenician ruins and astonishing mosaics of Carthage near the pretty oceanfront town of Sidi Bou Said, muse of artists and poets.

With more time to reflect, rejuvenate, and embrace the Ocean State of Mind, days at sea with Explora Journeys invite moments of unhurried exploration. Against a backdrop of endless blue, indulge in a varied programme of wellness, dining and entertainment, enriching the mind and indulging the senses, designed to satisfy even the most curious of minds. These moments at sea offer a rare chance to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with yourself and your loved ones. With so many onboard experiences, each day at sea is unique and memorable.

Losing yourself is a rite of passage in the UNESCO-listed Casbah of Algiers, where labyrinthine alleyways reveal hidden courtyards, artisan studios and the remarkable architecture of Ketchaoua Mosque. In the palm-shaded gardens and poetic pathways of Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, cast your eyes uphill towards the upraised hands of Maqam Echahid (Martyr's Memorial), lifted in eternal gratitude to those who fell during Algeria's War of Independence. Delve deeper into Algeria's prehistory at the Bardo National Museum before strolling the Promenade des Sablettes under a sultry Mediterranean sunset.

March into a hidden Spanish gem with centuries of deeply ingrained culture and history. Not forgetting gourmet cuisine fit for a king. Take part in cookery lessons, wine samplings and coffee workshops, or the heart stopping elevator to the top of the Castillo. Head back to Roman times at the theatre and sanctuary for relics and mosaics. Inspect weaponry at the military museum and explore shipwrecks, artefacts and Mediterranean history at museums. View delightful street art in the bustling city centre and sample the traditional sailor tipple, Asiático. Cartagena has sites you won't see in the rest of Spain, from Roman ruins, Byzantine walls and Belle Epoque architecture to marble streets and war memorials.

Blue-domed cathedrals, cobbled alleyways and leafy plazas shaded by giant Ficus trees set the scene for magical moments in Alicante, gateway to Costa Blanca beaches, jagged mountains and medieval villages. Wander through the narrow streets of El Barrio and gorge on turrón and tapas, then climb the steps to timeless Santa Cruz, where whitewashed houses, flecked with colourful pots, cling to steep staircases on the flanks of Mount Benacantil. High above lies the mighty Castel de la Santa Bàrbara, a 1,000-year-old sandstone citadel commanding spectacular views of the glittering Mediterranean and the tile mosaic of palm-fringed Explanada de España on the harbourside.

Once an important Roman capital, Tarragona's wealth of antiquities has seen the Catalonia city crowned a UNESCO World Heritage site. There's the standout waterfront 2nd-century amphitheatre and a well-preserved Roman circus. But wander the charming narrow, cobblestone streets and cafe-lined squares and you'll stumble upon more beautiful ruins – ancient forum walls and soaring columns – layered amidst modern city life.

Outside the city ramparts, take time to pilgrim 4km north and walk across the glorious two-tier Ferres Aqueduct built by Emperor Augustus and if visiting in October, witness a Tarragona tradition at the city's annual castells competition, where teams from across the country gather in the old bullring to create human towers between six and ten tiers high.

Breathe in the cultural heart of Catalan; an elegant blend of high energy and undisturbed tradition. Muse over the origins of captivating Gaudi architecture within the enchanting labyrinth that is the Gothic Quarter. Savour the flavours of fresh tapas and crisp cava in breezy plazas, tranquil terraces and coveted cafés, or glide down to a shimmering beach club to unwind.

Imagine a visit to peaceful Passeig de Gracia, where modernist buildings merge to showcase iconic global labels. And, as dusk falls, prepare for urban action and swing by the lively bohemian bars to fiesta on the leafy stretch of La Rambla. If you're serious about style, this colourful city provides plenty to celebrate.

At the crossroads of Europe and Africa, this once rakish, countercultural Moroccan city has retained its bohemian, beguilingly artistic feel. People watch the demi-monde from the Petit Socco, heart of Tangier's seductive café scene, before strolling the Kasbah and cobblestone Grand Socco among a tangle of streets saturated in colour from tiles and painted cedarwood shutters and doorways. Iconic must-visits might include the 64-year-old Librarie des Colonnes, a sumptuous bookshop of literary greats; Café Hafa, for sunset sweet mint tea overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar; and El Morocco Club, for a nightcap on its rooftop terrace or in the city's only piano bar.

Like a lighthouse, the majestic Hassan II Mosque beckons us to the shores of this bustling port city, its minaret soaring 690ft to the sky. Africa's biggest mosque is one of only two in Morocco open to non-Muslims, inviting us to marvel its mosaics, marble columns and 50 Murano glass chandeliers. Casablanca conjures a charismatic collision of tradition and modernity, the Habous Quartier's faded grandeur of French colonial Art Deco, whitewashed Moorish houses, narrow alleyways, small souks and olive markets in companion to its cosmopolitan nightlife, buzzing restaurants and Parisien-style cafes.

Sun, sea, and atmospheric architecture are in abundance in Agadir, a buzzy coastal oasis nicknamed the ‘Miami of Morocco'. Stroll into a 1,000 years of memories along modern, tree-lined boulevards designed by Le Corbusier after an earthquake levelled much of the city in 1960. Like a phoenix, Agadir arose and arouses travellers seeking a tapestry of treasures. Meander the Marina to eat fresh fish by the harbour, stroll the beach-side promenade then cool off under the trees in the Valley of the Birds. Shop Souk El Had, with nearly 6,000 stalls laden with spices, tajines, and teapots, then climb the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, where history lives amongst massive rammed earth walls.

Artist César Manrique put little Arrecife on the map. Explore his eclectic works in underground caverns, fabulous murals and his former home in nearby Tahíche, or sate your artistic appetite in contemporary gallery MIAC and the surreal underwater world of sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. The spectral landscape of Timanfaya, once a seething sea of lava shattered by volcanic eruptions, is ripe for 4x4 exploration, while the year-round waves of Playa de Famara invite beginners and pros alike to grab a surfboard and take the plunge.

Set against volcanic hills and Atlantic light, San Sebastián de La Gomera is a place of quiet significance and natural beauty. From this historic harbour, Christopher Columbus once set sail toward the New World, and echoes of that legacy remain in its churches and whitewashed streets. Beyond the town, the island reveals a wilder soul—lush valleys, dramatic cliffs and the ancient laurel forests of Garajonay National Park. In San Sebastián, history and nature meet in a landscape shaped by time, wind and ocean.

The cobblestone capital of La Isla Bonita – the lesser travelled northwestern outcrop of the Canaries – was once among the most important ports in the Spanish empire. Uncover its history at a handful of museums, including the cloistered Insular Museo of Natural History, feel the Caribbean thread in the sugarcane stacks at the covered market, and stroll narrow streets with hanging wooden balconies, every house painted a different colour, to grand colonial mansions and the Plaza Espana, hustling bustling heart of Santa Cruz.

Funchal's web of ancient streets spills down from lofty heights. Ride the cable car up to the exotic gardens of Monte Palace at its peak, where peacocks prowl high above the Atlantic. Descend at speed in a wicker sleigh piloted by ‘Carreriros' elegantly dressed in crisp whites and straw boater hats since the mid-1800s. Swirl a glass of amber-coloured Madeira at a café overlooking chequerboard-tiled Praça do Município and prepare to explore lush could forests crisscrossed by hiking trails and black sand beaches below jungle-covered cliffs.

Enjoy the rich buzz of Lisbon. Dip into the city's strong architectural, cultural and historical connections. Wander charming-cobbled streets, colourful buildings, the river Sado and endless nature. Pilgrimage to Fatima, tour hilly villages, learn Portuguese cooking techniques and listen to the Lisbon blues. Slip to charming Cascais for quieter energy and golden beaches. And as you bathe in the captivating light, enjoy plates of petiscos which - like fado - you'll soon discover is vibrant, warm and most appealing.

We had an amazing experience on Explora 2 from Lisbon to Barcelona in early April. The boarding was seamless, our cabin a lovely quiet haven, the food and restaurants were amazing, with so much choice. The icing on the cake was the Explora team, everyone was so friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble. We loved it and will return. Thank you read more for such a wonderful holiday.
