Departing Yokohama near Tokyo, our first port of call is Shimizu, famous for its fresh tuna and fabulous views of the snow-capped Mount Fuji. Then we reach bustling Nagoya, the birthplace of Toyota, and Wakayama, where you can visit a restored 16th-century castle and stroll its cherry blossom-filled gardens. An overnight in Osaka brings plenty of time to enjoy this neon-lit city’s world-famous street food: sample staples like okonomiyaki (savoury cabbage-based pancakes) and ikayaki (grilled squid skewers).

In Kochi, explore ancient temples and hike to the impossibly blue Nikobuchi Waterfall, read more and in Kagoshima, visit Sengan-en, sprawling 17th-century gardens that overlook Kinko Bay towards the active volcano Sakurajima. Next is Nagasaki, a vibrant city with a turbulent history: visit the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum for a somber account of the 1945 bombing and its aftermath. Relax with a day at sea before we reach our final destination, the South Korean city of Incheon.

Mount Fuji, Japan's most sacred volcano, stands at 12,388 feet and offers a mesmerizing landscape. Recognized by UNESCO as a "place and source of artistic inspiration," this snow-capped peak is a must-visit. Start with a trip to the Fuji Five Lakes region for breathtaking views and outdoor activities like hiking and boating.

Explore the cultural and spiritual side of the region at the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine. Nearby, Oshino Hakkai, a traditional village with clear spring ponds and thatched-roof houses, offers a glimpse into Japan's past. For a picture-perfect view of Mount Fuji, visit the Chureito Pagoda, especially stunning in spring with cherry blossoms.

Port:Shimizu

This port city is not just a gateway to Japan's iconic volcano but a treasure trove of experiences, from the bustling fish market of Shimizu to tranquil walks through lush green tea plantations. The allure of Shimizu lies in its ability to offer moments of Zen amidst the vibrancy of city life, inviting travelers to discover its rich culinary heritage, including the freshest sushi and sashimi, sourced directly from Suruga Bay. Cruise ships anchor at Shimizu Port, conveniently located approximately 10 kilometres (about 6.2 miles) from the heart of Shizuoka City.

Sitting pretty on the sandy coastline between Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan’s fourth-largest city is home to a thriving harbor district that is a lively destination in its own right. Part of the Garden Pier entertainment area, the country’s busiest port is set around leafy landscaped grounds, home to an amusement park, shopping mall and aquarium. Wonder at the centuries-old wooden vessels that mapped the seas during the Age of Discoveries, displayed in intricate models at the port’s Maritime Museum, and discover museum-ship Fuji, an icebreaker that explored Antarctica in the 1960s and 1970s. Further afield, a pair of golden shachihoko sea monsters crown Nagoya’s imposing five-storey 17th-century castle. A symbol of this city’s prosperity during the Tokugawa dynasty, the castle dates from Japan’s Edo period and its powerful shoguns. Nearby, step back in time to that era on the streets of the Shikemichi preservation district, lined with white-walled merchants’ houses now transformed into cafés and craft boutiques.

An imposing moated castle, its black-tiled roofs curling up towards the sky, sits across the street from a modern art museum in this multi-faceted city in southern Japan. It’s also the capital of Wakayama prefecture, a mystical place of monastic settlements and mountainous pilgrimage trails. There are spiritual sites to visit right in town, too, with a trio of revered Shinto shrines said to be among the oldest in the country. Tap into the area’s reputation as a hotbed for onsen (thermal springs) with a soak in mineral-rich waters, and try the province’s mandarin oranges and famous umeboshi (salted pickled plums).

One visit to Osaka, and you’ll soon see why it’s known as the ‘kitchen of Japan’. This is a city that takes food seriously, where every mealtime is a celebration. Embrace its proud culinary culture and stroll the neon-lit streets of Dotonbori to sample iconic dishes that characterize Osaka’s street food scene – from fritter-like okonomiyaki to piping hot balls of octopus-stuffed takoyaki. For a dose of history, pay a visit to Osaka Castle, which played a key role in the unification of Japan during the 16th century. Admire the sweeping views from the castle’s main tower and stroll the surrounding gardens, which come alive with cherry blossoms in spring and turn fiery red in fall.

Begin your visit with a trip to Kochi Castle, one of Japan’s few original castles, offering panoramic views of the city. Seoul is rich with history and futuristic charm, and makes a perfect day trip when making a port of call in South Korea.

Embrace the culture at historical sites like the Gyeongbokgung Palace, built during the Joseon dynasty in 1395. Wander through the bustling markets of Insadong and indulge in authentic Korean cuisine like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and bibimbap (mixed rice with vegetables and meat).

Ships will dock in Incheon (40km/24mi away, 30 minutes away by car).

Port:Incheon

Blessed with parks and markets to stroll through, it’s hard to resist stretching your legs in South Korea’s third-largest city. As you go, savor hot and crunchy deep-fried chicken, dakgangjeong, or a spicy skewer of fish cakes in a warming broth, eomuk, from the street-food stalls in Sinpo Market. Step through the great gate of the only official Chinatown in Korea and discover how its community helped create the country’s national dish at the eponymous Jajangmyeon Museum. Delight in the clouds of cherry blossom that grace Jayu Freedom Park in spring. You won’t tire of Incheon but dynamic Seoul is temptingly close by Metro. You might like to prepare your senses for an onrush of blinking neon lights and blasting K-pop music in the capital, yet there are calm historic corners to be found amid the soaring skyscrapers.
