Spectacular Month in the High Arctic   0 , QLD, Australia, Aug 2026
Although, we have not cruised extensively, and this 37-night voyage was twice the length of any previous voyage, we never tired of the fascinating lectures, the zodiac excursions, and the frequent entertainment activities. The Seabourn Venture’s suites were large and comfortable, and the drying cupboard was brilliant. The whole ship’s crew were wonderful, read more and were amazingly accomplished at remembering every guest’s personal preferences. The large Expedition Crew, which included 2 Inuit Ambassadors, had experts on every relevant topic, including history, archaeology, flora and fauna, and Inuit culture. The experience some of them had as individuals was truly remarkable and their accounting of their many adventures in the Arctic and Antarctic was sometimes mind-blowing, sometimes hilarious, but always fascinating. They truly made this experience very special.

A slight disappointment was that we had hoped to see more wildlife, and to be somewhat closer to it. However, we realise that this is completely out of anyone’s control, and related to the time of year we were there, the national rules governing approaching wildlife, as well as the inherent unpredictability of encounters. We did see a few polar bears, from a distance, a large herd of walrus lounging on a rocky shore, a few seals, and an incredible pod of some 150+ beluga whales swimming very close to the shoreline where we were walking. The latter was very special. However, as we were well into autumn, most of the whales and birds had already headed south for the winter.

One of the highlights of this trip was learning about and visiting Canadian Inuit communities, tasting their food, admiring their art and craft works, and enjoying the athletic abilities of the young people performing “Artic Games sports”. Equally fascinating but quite different were our visits to 4 Greenlandic towns, with their brightly painted homes and buildings. We travelled through some beautiful, uninhabited and remote landscapes, saw glaciers, icebergs and rugged mountains, and scenic fjords. We were in credibly lucky to see spectacular northern lights for 5 consecutive nights off the coast of Greenland.

This trip was definitely an incredibly special experience and has whetted our appetite to explore other remote parts of the world and learn about their history and culture.
