The streets are lined with colourful buildings, music plays at all hours of the day and people dance through the streets to the sound of beating drums moving to the rhythms of the setting sun. Over the next two days, explore the islands of Cape Verde off the West African coastline, from the capital of Santiago to the outer atoll of São Vicente. The history of these islets is linked to the African slave trade beginning in 1492, through to colonisation in the late 1800's by the Portuguese when the slave trade was abolished. Known for pottery, hand dyed textiles, paintings, instruments and sculptures discover the artisanal markets and handcrafted wares that speak to the culture of Cape Verde, both past and present. While meandering through quiet streets, admire the charming street art, and make your way to the Alexandre Albuquerque Square for a local seafood lunch that's surrounded by intriguing colonial architecture, and greenery. Today the island of Santo Antão the westernmost island of Cape Verde awaits with its immense volcanic walls that tower over green peaks and perfectly farmed terraced valleys, is largely untouched by tourism and yours to explore almost exclusively so you'll have time to make the most of this unique destination. A cross between Morocco and the Himalayas with a desert climate on the south side and high mountains at its centre, the scenery will leave you spellbound.

Explore the colonial history of the capital, Santo Antão at your leisure, as you have a whole day here to enjoy. Porto Novo has humble beginnings as a local's fishing village, and was only recognised as a city as recently as 2005. You'll have time to try the famous Cape Verde rum, or ‘grogue' as it's called, made from sugarcane, the national drink. (B/L/D)

Take a moment to yourself this morning as Scenic Eclipse sails out back into the vast grand ocean and soak in the comforts of your luxuriously appointed suite your very own 6-star hotel.
