Explore the Canadian Rockies your way

Rocky Mountaineer can be booked as a short rail journey or as part of a more extensive Canadian holiday. The simplest itineraries combine two or three days aboard the train with overnight accommodation or you can choose a longer package which adds hotel stays, transfers, sightseeing and moretime to explore destinations such as Vancouver, Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper.

Circle journeys combine two rail routes - First Passage to the West and Journey Through The Clouds - allowing you to experience Western Canada without retracing your steps. Other Rocky Mountaineer packages are designed to maximise your free time so you can explore the region independently.

Daylight journeys for scenic immersion

Rocky Mountaineer trains only travel during the day time, so you'll enjoy uninterrupted views of the Canadian Rockies throughout the journey. At the midpoint destination, you'll transfer to one fo their partner hotels (standard, superior or premier), where your luggage and overnight accommodation will be waiting.

Rocky Mountaineer offers two purpose-designed coach styles, both created for panoramic viewing. With GoldLeaf Service, you’ll travel on the upper level of a bi-level coach beneath a full glass-dome roof. With SilverLeaf Service, oversized windows curve overhead to frame the passing scenery.

Both service levels also provide access to an outdoor viewing area, allowing you to step outside, stretch your legs and take in the landscape. GoldLeaf features a spacious outdoor platform, while SilverLeaf offers a smaller, more intimate viewing area.

Where can I find information specific to my Rocky Mountaineer booking?
Once you've booked your journey with us you will be able to view your booking details, including your itinerary and payment status, in our Client Portal. You can also request optional add-on tours and transfers if your itinerary doesn't already include them.
Do I need to book travel insurance for my journey?
Whether you purchase travel insurance with our recommended insurance providers or not, we strongly recommend you have travel insurance to protect against unexpected situations like medical emergencies, flight delays, wildfires, or extreme weather. Chat to your Global Journeys Travel Advisor to learn what insurance options are available for your journey.
What time does the train depart and arrive?
For the most up-to-date arrival and departure information prior to travel, please refer to your final travel documents, which will be emailed to you 45-30 days prior to your departure.
What meals are included in my Rocky Mountaineer journey?
Meals onboard the train are included as part of your Rocky Mountaineer journey. Please refer to your confirmation documents provided at the time of booking, or your final travel documents, which will be emailed to you 45-30 days prior to your departure, for information on what meals are included as part of your journey. These are also detailed on each itinerary page.
What accommodations are included with my Rocky Mountaineer journey?
Depending on the package you have booked, accommodations may be included before or after your Rocky Mountaineer journey. Please refer to your confirmation documents provided at the time of booking, or your final travel documents, which will be emailed to you 30 days prior to your departure, for information on what accommodations are included as part of your journey.
What happens with my luggage during my Rocky Mountaineer journey?
If you book a package with Rocky Mountaineer, luggage handling is included at the hotels that are part of your package. Please confirm with the front desk on where and when to leave your luggage for collection.

If you book a two or three day rail journey and/or arranged your own accommodations, luggage handling is not included at those accommodations. Please refer to your final travel documents, sent 45-30 days prior to departure, for details on where to bring your luggage to/from at the beginning and end of your rail journey.

If you are travelling on our First Passage to the West or Journey through the Clouds rail routes and will be travelling with additional pieces of checked luggage that you will not require while staying overnight in Kamloops, as an added convenience, we would be happy to direct extra checked luggage pieces straight through to your final location at the end of day two of your journey. Note, this luggage will not be accessible until you complete your train journey so, please pack accordingly. This service is optional and can be arranged - please chat to your Global Journeys Travel Advisor to arrange.
What should I wear onboard the train?
Dress onboard Rocky Mountaineer is casual. Here are some recommendations on what you may want to wear onboard the train.
  • Comfortable, cool layers as there are expansive windows
  • A light jacket or sweater as the air conditioning may feel just right for some, but chilly for others
  • Flat-soled shoes with grip to help keep you steady with the natural movement of the train
  • A hat and sunglasses for sunny days
What should I bring onboard the train
We recommend that you bring a day pack or bag which is small enough to fit at your feet onboard the train as there is no overhead or under seat storage. Your checked luggage will travel separately from the train, therefore you will not have access to it until you arrive at your midpoint and final rail destinations.

  • GoldLeaf Service: 16” x 11” x 8” or 40cm x 28cm x 20cm
  • SilverLeaf Service: 23” x 8” x 8” or 58cm x 20cm x 20cm

Are there checked luggage allowances?
Your rail journey includes complimentary luggage handling between destinations. When you check in for your rail journey at one of our Guest Centres, you will be given a Rocky Mountaineer luggage tag(s).Your checked luggage will travel separately from the train, therefore you will not have access to it until you arrive at your midpoint and final rail destinations.

Rocky Mountaineer luggage allowances include:
  • Maximum two pieces of luggage per person
  • Total weight of luggage per person not to exceed 30kg or 66lbs, with a maximum weight per piece not more than 23kg or 50lbs
  • Oversized items may be subject to surcharge
  • All luggage is subject to Rocky Mountaineer’s luggage policy
  • Pack your fragile or breakable items in your luggage with care. Rocky Mountaineer is not responsible for any broken items.
Is luggage handling included?
Your luggage will be delivered to your accommodation in our midpoint destination, Kamloops. For all other destinations, please review your final travel documents for luggage handling details.
Do you sleep on the train?
Our train does not have sleeper cars. As a daylight only train, you will spend your days on the train and spend your night(s) in a comfortable hotel. This way, you will not miss a moment of the stunning scenery along your journey.
How do you assign seats?
When you check in, you will receive your pre-assigned seat and overnight accommodation in Kamloops. If you have a special seating request, such as sitting near a friend who has booked separately, please advise us at least 45 days in advance. Please note that Rocky Mountaineer are are unable to accommodate specific seat or coach requests.
Will there be a range of culinary options available to meet dietary requirements?
Our onboard menu will have a selection of options to cater to various tastes and requirements. If you have a specific dietary requirement, either an allergy or restriction, please let your Global Journeys Travel Advisor know at least 60 days prior to the train departure.
What time will we arrive in our destinations?
Arrival times are approximate and subject to unforeseen delays. Depending on the rail route and direction in which you travel, arrival in your destination ranges from the afternoon to the evening. Please refer to your final travel documents, which will be emailed to you 45-30 days prior to your departure.
What is the protocol concerning gratuities
Onboard train gratuities are included in the prices shown. Gratuities are not included for driver guides, tour escorts, or porterage for hotels booked through Rocky Mountaineer.
Am I able to move around onboard the train?
One of the advantages of train travel is the spacious room afforded to all guests. We allow safe movement through your own coach, including an outdoor viewing area to enjoy fresh air, that is accessible only to guests in your coach.
Are children allowed on the train?
The majority of Rocky Mountaineer guests are adults, however, we do welcome a small number of children each season. Children travelling with us must be old enough to safely sit on their own. Infants cannot be seated on their parent or guardian’s laps while onboard, and the seats on the train do not have seat belts for securing children’s car seats.

Parents and guardians are responsible for the safety of their children while onboard the train, and must ensure children are under their direct supervision at all times. We do not have a special price for children. Every guest on the train, regardless of age, pays the same price for their seat and onboard experience.
Are meals included?
Meals that are included as a part of your itinerary will be noted with either B (Breakfast), L (Lunch), D (Dinner) on each package page. Breakfasts and lunches are included on board.
What wildlife will I see?
There are wonderful opportunities for viewing wildlife on all rail routes and in our destinations. On any of our rail routes, you may see bear, elk, deer, moose, bald eagles, osprey, salmon, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep. Sightings are never guaranteed of course.
Is travelling eastbound better than westbound?
Rocky's rail routes are spectacular in either direction and will include the same highlights and scenery. We encourage you to choose the direction of travel based on your own schedule requirements and availability at the time of booking.
Should I plan connecting transportation or dinner reservations on rail travel days?
Rail travel in North America is occasionally subject to unforeseen delays. For that reason, please do not arrange connecting transportation, including flights, or dinner reservations on these days.
Do I need a visa to enter Canada?
Depending on your citizenship, you may require a visa to enter Canada. Some international travellers who fly to Canada may also need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), prior to boarding a flight to Canada. Please visit our visa guide for more information.
Can I upgrade my accommodations in Kamloops?
Rocky Mountaineer has secured the best available accommodation in Kamloops. This is moderate accommodation with essential amenities and we are unable to offer hotel upgrades for the overnight stop in this destination.
Are transfers included with the two-day rail journeys and packages?
All journeys (including two-day rail journeys) come with a motorcoach transfer between one of our partner hotels or a designated central location and the train, in all of our destinations. Other transfers such as major international airport transfers and in‑between destinations are also available as an add-on to your journey.
