There are many common misconceptions when it comes to ocean cruising. Sometimes these stem from misinformation, sometimes from misguided stereotypes, and sometimes from a previous cruise experience that wasn’t quite the right fit for you.

However, modern cruising has seen an evolution of ship and itinerary design that challenges the status quo – and Azamara is busting the myths that may have you wary about ocean cruising.

Myth: Cruise ships are overcrowded

Azamara’s fleet consists of three small cruise ships, accommodating between 690 and 702 guests. There is a generous space to passenger ratio and each ship fosters an intimate onboard experience.

Thanks to their size, these ships are also able to navigate narrower waterways and dock in ports that larger ships can’t get to, so whether you are at sea or in port, you won’t find yourself lacking some breathing room.

Myth: Cruise ships are full of germs

Cruise lines are subject to inspections by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which works with the cruise industry to prevent and control the introduction, transmission, and spread of gastrointestinal illnesses.

These inspections take place unannounced twice per year, and each ship is given a score of 1 to 100 (the higher, the better). At time of writing, Azamara’s ships have a CDC score of 94, 96 and 97.

Fewer than 1% of norovirus outbreaks occur on board cruise ships, and statistics show that you are 750 times less likely to catch a common stomach bug on a cruise ship than you are on land.

White Night on board Azamara

Myth: I’ll get bored cruising

Cruise itineraries are designed to engage travellers both on shore and on land. An extensive shore excursion program is available and Azamara prides itself on its port intensive journeys with later departures and overnight stays.

During your time on board, there is also an enrichment and entertainment program to capitalise on your holiday time. This may consist of guest lectures, classes and workshops, Azamara’s iconic White Night parties, and evening performances of music and dance.

Myth: Alcohol on board is expensive

Azamara guests can enjoy select alcoholic beverages complimentary. All Azamara cruise fares include select standard spirits along with a choice of international beers and changing red and white wine selections throughout the journey.

If you would like to indulge in specialty drops, premium spirits, or other alcoholic options that are not included in the complimentary selection, there are also upgraded beverage packages available for purchase which allow you to enjoy more of your preferred drinks at great value.

Dining Experiences on board Azamara

Myth: I’ll get tired of the same old buffet

Azamara offers a world of flavours, without even leaving the ship. On every voyage, guests can enjoy casual or fine dining with complimentary and specialty dining options that will satisfy all your culinary desires.

There are options for relaxed dining and snacks, the Main Dining room serves a variety of nightly selections as well as dishes infused the flavours of the regions you are travelling through, and the two speciality restaurants will wow you with their menu.

From beef tenderloin Carpaccio with orange oil to lobster bisque or some fresh sushi, the culinary journey on board is every bit as varied and enjoyable as the destinations you travel to. Plus, for a real treat, you can enjoy a special Chef’s Table dinner complete with expert wine pairings which will delight your palate with every delectable course.

Myth: I’m going to get seasick

Motion sickness is a common concern for first time cruisers, however, if you are susceptible to nausea when you fly or drive, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will experience the same at sea. Similarly, if you have felt seasickness on smaller boats, you may have a different experience on a cruise ship.

Specialised stabilisers on all Azamara ships are designed to give guests a smooth ride and choosing a mid-ship stateroom or suite will also minimise movement. Take a look at this seasickness guide for first time cruisers to find out more.

Myth: Cruising is for old people who aren’t very active

Cruising doesn’t overlook the young and the young at heart, in fact, it is perfect for them. Itineraries are designed to provide options for travellers of varied interests and ages, and with plenty of time in port, you can spend it how you choose. Perhaps join an Azamara shore excursion or explore on your own, from hiking and kayaking to experiencing destinations like a local.

If you like to stay active on holidays, there is absolutely no reason you can’t do so on an Azamara cruise – even when you are at sea. On board there is a fully equipped fitness centre as well as fitness classes and personal training (and a relaxing spa to find holistic wellness!).

Myth: Cruises are expensive

A cruise can provide a great value holiday thanks to the inclusions of your cruise fare. When you cruise with Azamara, the price of your voyage includes accommodation, transport, food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and onboard activities.

All these costs add up when you are exploring independently, and you’ll often have to budget for a lot of this spending along the way. When you cruise, your cruise fare is paid in advance, so you don’t have to worry about as many expenses while you are on holidays. It is a convenient, and affordable, way to explore the globe.

Enjoying the view with Azamara in Norway

Myth: Cruises are claustrophobic

Sometimes people may be hesitant to cruise for fear of feeling trapped. However, cruising can make you feel just the opposite – completely free. Sea days can be enjoyed on your private veranda or in one of the open public spaces where the sea breeze and open horizon welcomes you.

Plus, many itineraries will see you onshore throughout most of the day (and even in the evening with Azamara’s late departures and overnight stays) so you can enjoy plenty of time exploring what is on offer on land.

With over 160 journeys to choose from, starting from as few as just four days, you can enjoy a cruise experience without committing to weeks or months at sea. Enjoy an adventure in under a week to ‘test the water’ or set sail for as long as you choose.

Myth: Cruise itineraries only go to touristy places

The size of Azamara’s ships means that they can go places further off the beaten path than larger vessels, exploring unique destinations and docking deeper in the heart of them. As well as their multi-destination journeys, Azamara also offers country intensive voyages that spend more time discovering one region in more depth, rather than just the iconic highlights.

Introducing 41 maiden ports in 2020 and continually evolving their journeys, there is always somewhere new to discover (and a new way to experience them) with Azamara.
