Ponant

PONANT invites you to experience the exceptional by discovering the east coast of Greenland and following the ice to the majestic lands of Spitsbergen during a 17-day cruise. In the footsteps of the great explorers and Norwegian trappers, plunge into the history of these remote territories, during a period of extreme conditions when the ice still envelops the wild and deserted landscape.

Thanks to Le Commandant Charcot, the first hybrid electric polar exploration ship, you will brave the elements, to reach Greenland and the Scoresby Sound region. In the heart of this hostile yet sublime world read more of ice, you will navigate in the wake of Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who was deeply connected to the Inuit land, where vestiges of his passage remain. The sumptuous decor is made up of snow-topped peaks and majestic fjords, icebergs of poetic shapes, and ice as far as the eye can see.

You will then set sail towards the Northeast Greenland National Park, the largest national park in the world and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: here, the trappers’ cabins are lost in the immensity of the magically coloured alpine landscapes and the impressive glaciers. You will go where few have had the chance, to the sites of the Arctic tales written by Jorn Riel. This immense territory, which represents almost 45% of the total area of Greenland, is home to the King Oscar Fjord and Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord, where the bare ochre cliffs disappear into the boreal sea. Polar bears and musk oxen live in these distant lands and you may be lucky enough to spot them on the horizon.

Follow the ice and cross the Greenland Sea to reach the Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park much further north. Former whalers, once settled on the sites that are now home to the graves of many sailors, have made way for various species of cetaceans and walruses, which have recolonised their lands.

Departs: 18:00

Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland, offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Begin your day exploring the striking Hallgrímskirkja church, with its panoramic city views from the tower. Wander through the colorful streets of the Old Harbor, where you can find quirky shops, cozy cafes, and stunning views of Mount Esja.

Don't miss the Harpa Concert Hall, an architectural marvel on the waterfront, or a visit to the National Museum for a deep dive into Icelandic history. Recharge at one of Reykjavik's many geothermal pools, like the Blue Lagoon, just a short drive from the city. Wrap up your visit with a stroll along the scenic Sun Voyager sculpture, capturing the spirit of adventure and discovery.

Spend exceptional moments sailing aboard Le Commandant Charcot, the world’s first luxury polar exploration vessel and the first PC2-class polar cruise ship capable of sailing into the very heart of the ice, on seas and oceans which the frozen conditions render inaccessible to ordinary ships. Le Commandant Charcot is fitted with oceanographic and scientific equipment selected by a committee of experts.

Take advantage of the on-board lectures and opportunities for discussion with these specialists to learn more about the poles. Participate in furthering scientific research with PONANT and let us discover together what these fascinating destinations have yet to reveal to us.

Ittoqqortoormiit is one of the remotest inhabited places in the world. It is bordered to the south by the vast Greenland National Park, which, at 18,000km, is the largest national park in the world. To the northwest is the world’s deepest multi-branched fjord system, Scoresby Sound.

Covered with ice and snow for nine months of the year, you will be able to discover the ancestral way of life of the last hunters of the polar region. As soon as the thickness of the ice floe allows, they set out on the trail of walruses, seals, narwhals, musk ox and polar bears, travelling by traditional dog sleds.

Enjoy the absolutely unique experience of sailing to the heart of the ice floe, this vast expanse of virgin, immaculate ice. The landscapes are constantly changing, shifting from a smooth, flat wilderness to a chaos of ice, then to channels of open water. Your ship will sail along these naturally open channels and through the areas where the frozen layer is thinnest, offering you the chance to experience magic maritime moments in the midst of drifting sea ice. It will also often be an opportunity to see a particular kind of fauna, totally dependent on the ice floe.

Covering an area of around one million square kilometres, almost half the island, the North-East Greenland National Park, the largest national park in the world, is a particularly isolated region. Cut off for many months of the year by the ice floe, it is renowned for its pristine nature and rich wildlife.

The craggy coastline, formed by gigantic fjords, is 18,000 km in total and includes both the highest parts of the Northern Hemisphere’s largest ice cap and the world’s northernmost area of land.

Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord, located in East Greenland, is renowned for its breathtaking Arctic landscapes and pristine natural beauty. This expansive fjord system is surrounded by towering mountains, majestic glaciers, and dramatic cliffs, offering an awe-inspiring view of Greenland’s untouched wilderness.

Visitors to Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord can explore its serene waters by boat, often encountering diverse wildlife such as seals, whales, and various seabirds. The fjord’s remote location and spectacular scenery make it an ideal spot for hiking and photography, providing a unique opportunity to experience the raw beauty of the Arctic environment. With its stunning vistas and tranquil atmosphere, Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord is a remarkable destination for those seeking adventure and solitude in one of the world’s most remote regions.

Svalbard’s northern region differs from the southern region as it is less influenced by the Norwegian Current coming through the Greenland Sea and as a result shows more ice.

The northern part of Spitsbergen Island has quite a number of impressive fjords, bays and glaciers. The east coast of the island is inlcuded in the Nordaust Svalbard Nature Reserve.

Throughout this region there are several walrus haul-outs, spectacular glaciers, bird cliffs and bird islands, as well as surprising flora in Arctic deserts and the possibility to see polar bears.

Longyearbyen is the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, located on Svalbard’s main island, and is the northernmost territorial capital on the planet. With winter temperatures dropping to below 40°C, the landscapes of this mining town are simply breathtaking. The glaciers, the mountains stretching as far as the eye can see and the untouched nature, make you feel like you’re in completely unexplored territory.

During your journey at sea, make the most of the many services and activities on board. Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the spa or stay in shape in the fitness centre. Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing.

This journey without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, depending on the activities offered, or to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the Ponant photographers in their dedicated space. As for lovers of the open sea, they will be able to visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observe marine species. A truly enchanted interlude, combining comfort, rest and entertainment.

In the north of the Arctic circle you’ll discover Tromsø, a secluded town located in the county of Troms. Norwegians call it the “Paris of the north”. You’ll soon see why when you discover its extensive neoclassical architectural heritage. A stunning example is the Arctic cathedral, a major monument whose stylistic purity echoes the outline of the mountains surrounding the town.
