Overview

An important procedure conditions your departure: in order to be able to arrive on Chilean territory, a mobility pass is required. The delay to obtain it can take 30 days, we kindly ask you to make your request as soon as possible. To do this, you must validate your vaccination schedule on the site https://mevacuno.gob.cl/ in order to obtain this mobility pass (up to 30 days from your request). From Patagonia to the Antarctic peninsula, via South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, this all-new itinerary will take you into the heart of the Scotia Arc.

This volcanic archipelago at the junction read more of the Andes cordillera and the Antarctandes will be revealed to you in all its riches and splendour. All the wildlife of the Far South can be found there: king and gentoo penguins, elephant seals, fur seals mingle on the beautiful dark sand beaches... At sea, orcas, humpback whales and other cetaceans will escort you along your navigation through frozen waters.

This cruise will also be an opportunity to discover four very different ecosystems, from the wooded heights of the Tierra del Fuego and the table top icebergs of the Weddell Sea to the glacier-covered mountains of the South Sandwich Islands and the snow-capped summits of South Georgia. We are privileged guests in these extreme lands where we are at the mercy of weather and ice conditions. Our navigation will be determined by the type of ice we come across; as the coastal ice must be preserved, we will take this factor into account from day to day in our itineraries.

The sailing schedule and any landings, activities and wildlife encounters are subject to weather and ice conditions. These experiences are unique and vary with each departure. The Captain and the Expedition Leader will make every effort to ensure that your experience is as rich as possible, while respecting safety instructions and regulations imposed by the IAATO.

Itinerary

Departs: 18:00

Punta Arenas, perched on the southern tip of Chile's mainland, serves as a crucial gateway to the Antarctic, drawing explorers from around the world. This city is steeped in maritime history and is the largest population centre in Patagonia, offering a fascinating mix of cultural influences evident in its architecture and local customs. The Nao Victoria Museum, featuring replicas of historic ships, and the poignant Monumento al Ovejero, celebrating the region’s sheep farming heritage, are key highlights.

The rugged, windswept landscapes surrounding Punta Arenas invite outdoor enthusiasts to explore. Nearby Torres del Paine National Park offers spectacular trekking opportunities, while the Strait of Magellan provides panoramic sea vistas and a chance to spot diverse marine wildlife, making this region a hub for natural and historical exploration.

Use your days spent in the Drake Passage to familiarise yourself with your ship and deepen your knowledge of the Antarctic. The Expedition Leader will first present the IAATO rules of conduct that must be observed during landings in the region and will explain everything you need to know about the zodiac outings. Lectures about the history and wildlife of the Antarctic will be an opportunity for you to learn more about this magical region, where every cruise is a unique experience. You will experience exceptional sailing moments on board and join the naturalist-guides on your ship’s exterior decks to look out for albatrosses, cape petrels, and other seabirds flying over the Drake Passage.

The South Shetland Islands, located just off the Antarctic Peninsula, are a rugged archipelago cloaked in ice and snow, offering a stark and beautiful glimpse into the remote wilderness of Antarctica. These islands are renowned for their dramatic landscapes, featuring towering glaciers, steep cliffs, and volcanic terrain, making them a compelling destination for adventurous explorers.

Ecologically, the islands are a hotspot for wildlife, hosting vast colonies of penguins, including Chinstrap, Adélie, and Gentoo species, as well as seals, whales, and a rich variety of seabirds. Research stations dot the landscape, where scientists study this unique environment. Visitors typically arrive by ice-strengthened vessels or expedition cruises, which provide opportunities for zodiac landings and close encounters with the islands’ natural wonders.

Throughout your time in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula, you will find yourself in the heart of a spectacular decor in subtle shades of blue and white, surrounded by exceptional wildlife. You will sail through the Antarctic Sound, named after Swedish explorer Otto Nordenskjöld’s ship, which was trapped by the ice during an important scientific expedition in 1902. The gateway to the Weddell Sea, this sound is filled with gigantic tabular icebergs and plates of sea ice drifting northward from the coastal areas of this vast sea. It is home to Adelie penguins and a great many leopard seals.

Spend exceptional moments sailing aboard Le Commandant Charcot, the world’s first luxury polar exploration vessel and the first PC2-class polar cruise ship capable of sailing into the very heart of the ice, on seas and oceans which the frozen conditions render inaccessible to ordinary ships. Le Commandant Charcot is fitted with oceanographic and scientific equipment selected by a committee of experts.

Take advantage of the on-board lectures and opportunities for discussion with these specialists to learn more about the poles. Participate in furthering scientific research with PONANT and let us discover together what these fascinating destinations have yet to reveal to us.

South Georgia, a remote island in the southern Atlantic Ocean, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Its rugged terrain is home to vast colonies of king penguins, seals, and other seabirds, set against the backdrop of breathtaking glaciers and mountains. The island played a pivotal role in Antarctic exploration, and the remnants of whaling stations, alongside the grave of explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton in Grytviken, offer a poignant glimpse into its past.

For visitors, South Georgia offers unparalleled opportunities for photography and wildlife observation. Despite its remote location, the island's rich biodiversity and historical sites make it a must-visit for those seeking adventure off the beaten path.

During your journey at sea, make the most of the many services and activities on board. Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the spa or stay in shape in the fitness centre. Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing.

This journey without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, depending on the activities offered, or to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the Ponant photographers in their dedicated space. As for lovers of the open sea, they will be able to visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observe marine species. A truly enchanted interlude, combining comfort, rest and entertainment.
