Overview
Heading east, the ChathamIslands will appear to you, adding new breath-taking landscapes to your expedition, from isolated beaches to sheer cliffs coloured read more in ochre and covered in green nature. The 80 million years' old archipelago is made of 10 islands boasting various endemic species of birds and plants you will be able to discover alongside your team of passionate expedition experts. Le Lapérouse will then proceed to the east coast of the Southern Island. You will sail to the rocky peninsula of Kaikoura to admire New Zealand's rich biodiversity.
Your cruise will come to an end in Wellington, capital of New Zealand. This ancient site of the Maori people, as demonstrated by the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, perfectly combines local traditions and bustling nightlife. Dunedin is New Zealand's oldest city and is often referred to as the Edinburgh of New Zealand. This city of the south, wears its Scottish heritage with pride. The city contains some of the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian architecture in the Southern Hemisphere. The Silverpeaks hinterland to the North West provides a picturesque backdrop and The Otago Peninsula, which lies within the city boundaries, has internationally renowned wildlife reserves, including the only mainland breeding colony of Northern Royal Albatross.
Christchurch is known as NZ's "Garden City," boasting an array of lush parks and gardens - take the opportunity to visit the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, where you can explore a diverse range of plant species. A short walk away, the Canterbury Museum offers fascinating exhibits on the region's natural and cultural history.
For a unique perspective, take a ride on the Christchurch Gondola, providing panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the city's innovative architecture, such as the Cardboard Cathedral, a symbol of resilience and creativity following the 2011 earthquake. Cruise ships visiting Christchurch dock at Akaroa, located approximately 83 kilometers (52 miles) from Christchurch, with a travel time of about 1.5 hours. Akaroa Harbour is known for its stunning scenery and is a tender port, meaning passengers will be ferried to the shore. The charming town of Akaroa itself is a delightful place to explore, with its French and British colonial history, boutique shops, and waterfront cafes.

Two hours north of Christchurch is the town of Kaikoura, situated on a rocky peninsula with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. It’s abundance of crayfish combined with a rich habitat makes Kaikoura a marine mammal mecca - perfect for seeing dolphins, seals, and orca, humpback, and sperm whales. Ships will anchor offshore and tenders will be provided to the jetty.

Food was of the highest standard an the open bar well read more stocked to meet all tastes. Don't worry too much about formal gear, a sports coat and a colourful dress are all that is required on the two gala nights. On the other nights, slacks and polo are fine.
We helicoptered to Mitchell Falls which again was expensive but well worth it. Forget about the Horizontal Falls boat ride. Those that went were very dissatisfied as the most exciting of the two Falls is now closed due to a boating accident. I've seen more challenging wave sets in Moreton Bay. Overall 11/10 from us and very highly recommended
