Do you sleep on the Canyon Spirit train?

No, Canyon Spirit does not have sleeper cars. As a daylight-only train, you will spend your days on the train and spend your night(s) between train days in a comfortable hotel. This way, you will not miss a moment of the stunning scenery along your journey.

Does Canyon Spirit stop for photographs along the route?

No, but the train slows down at particularly scenic locations to ensure you have time for photographs.

How does Canyon Spirit assign seats?

When you check in, you will receive your pre-assigned seat and details of your mid-rail journey overnight accommodation in Glenwood Springs, and for three-day rail guests, accommodations in Moab as well. If you have a special seating request, such as sitting near a friend who has booked separately, please let your Global Journeys Travel Advisor know at least 45 days in advance. Canyon Spirit are unable to accommodate specific seat or coach requests.

Will there be a range of culinary options available to meet dietary requirements?

Canyon Spirit's onboard menu will have a selection of options to cater to various tastes and requirements. If you have a specific dietary requirement, either an allergy or restriction, please inform your Global Journeys Travel Advisor at least 60 days prior to the train departure.

What is the protocol concerning gratuities?

Onboard train gratuities are included in our prices. Gratuities are not included for driver guides, tour escorts, or porterage for hotels.

Am I able to move around onboard Canyon Spirit?

One of the advantages of train travel is the spacious room afforded to all guests. Canyon Spirit allow safe movement through your own coach, including an outdoor viewing area known as a vestibule, accessible only to guests in your coach and providing a space to enjoy fresh air. Guests who have selected a Premier upgrade have access to the lounge car which offers an additional space to enjoy.

Are children allowed on the train?

Canyon Spirit is pleased to welcome a small number of children each season. For safety reasons, children must be old enough to sit comfortably in their own seat, as the rail coaches are not equipped for car seats or lap-held infants. To ensure a relaxing and enjoyable experience for all, parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their children at all times while onboard. WiFi is not available, encouraging guests to unplug and enjoy the scenic views and captivating storytelling by Canyon Spirit's Hosts.

If you are traveling with children, we recommend you opt for the Premier upgrade. It includes access to an exclusive lounge car and additional outdoor viewing area, offering your family extra space to move around and make the most of your time onboard. Please note, there is no discounted fare for children.

Does Canyon Spirit accommodate people with special needs and/or disabilities?

Canyon Spirit will make every effort to meet any special needs thier guests may have, as will their hotel partners. For guests using wheelchairs, Canyon Spirit provide manual lifts or ramps for boarding and disembarking the train and can preassign a coach equipped with accessible washrooms. Please let your Global Journeys Travel Advisor know of any mobility requirements at the time of booking so you can complete Canyon Spirit's Accessibility Form.

What is the difference between Rocky Mountaineer and Canyon Spirit?

Canyon Spirit is a new elevated train experience from Armstrong Collective, the travel visionaries behind Rocky Mountaineer. In 2021, Rocky Mountaineer introduced the Rockies to the Red Rocks route, showcasing the rugged desert canyons and stunning national parks of the Southwest. Now a guest favorite, this route is now carried forward by Canyon Spirit. Building on Rocky Mountaineer’s decades of world-class hospitality, guests can expect the same elevated service, while expanding on existing routes and offering new ways for guests to explore America's Southwest by rail.

How far do we travel on Canyon Spirit?

Rockies to the Red Rocks is a daylight-only, two-day train journey that operates both eastbound and westbound between Denver and Moab, with an optional third-day extension to Salt Lake City. Each day onboard typically ranges from 5.5 to 9.5 hours, offering ample time to take in the scenery.

What service levels are available?

Every Canyon Spirit journey includes thier all-inclusive Signature experience: comfortable seats, regionally inspired meals and beverages, access to a viewing area with an open-air-style window for fresh air and unobstructed views, world-class service and storytelling from their Hosts, along with with overnight stays at comfortable hotels at the midpoint(s) of your journey.

To further elevate your experience, Canyon Spirit offer the option to enhance your rail journey with a Premier upgrade. Enjoy exclusive lounge car access, a selection of handcrafted signature cocktails, expert wine pairings with meals, elevated gourmet snacks, an extra outdoor viewing area, and an additional onboard restroom.

What is the best time of year to travel with Canyon Spirit?

Their season runs from April to November, and each time of year offers something special. Spring brings fewer crowds in destinations and vibrant wildflowers. Summer offers hot, dry days and comfortable evenings, with chances to spot elk and bald eagles. In fall (autumn), warm days give way to crisp evenings, and the landscape transforms with colorful aspen and oak trees. No matter when you travel, you're guaranteed an unforgettable experience.

What meals are included in my Canyon Spirit journey?

All meals, snacks, and beverages served onboard the train are included as part of your Canyon Spirit journey. Please refer to your confirmation documents provided at the time of booking, or your final travel documents, which will be emailed to you 45 days prior to your departure.

Is smoking permitted on the train?

No. For the comfort of all guests, smoking or vaping of any kind, including cigarettes, cannabis, cigars, and e-cigarettes, are strictly prohibited. This policy applies onboard, in the outdoor vestibules, restrooms, inside the station, on the platforms, near the tracks, and in hotel rooms. We recommend that you prepare for the journey accordingly.

Do I need to book travel insurance for my trip?

Canyon Spirit and Global Journeys strongly recommend you have travel insurance to protect against unexpected situations like medical emergencies, flight delays, wildfires, or extreme weather.

Should I plan connecting transportation on the day of my train's arrival?

Rail travel is occasionally subject to unforeseen delays. For this reason, please do not arrange connecting transportation, including flights, on rail travel days. If your package includes accommodation at the end of your journey, transportation to your hotel will be included and arranged.

What are the luggage allowances?

Each guest may bring a maximum of two pieces of luggage, with a combined weight of no more than 66 pounds (30 kilograms). No single piece can exceed 50 pounds (23 kilograms), and oversized items may be subject to an additional surcharge. If you have booked a travel package, additional restrictions may apply based on accommodation or transportation, so please refer to your travel documents for specific details.

We recommend bringing a small day bag for use onboard the train. It should fit comfortably at your feet and measure no more than 23” x 8” x 8” (58 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm). Checked luggage travels separately from the train and will not be accessible until you arrive at your mid-rail journey overnight stop(s) and final destination.

What should I pack for the American Southwest?

You'll travel through a range of environments — from the desert landscapes of Moab to the high elevations of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, reaching up to 9,240 ft. (2,800 m.). Summer temperatures in these destinations can climb to 100°F (38°C), while weather in the mountains can shift quickly and dramatically — even dropping below freezing (32°F / 0°C) in April, May, October, and November.

When can I expect the final travel documents for my journey?

Your final travel documents will be emailed to you approximately 45 days prior to travel. At that time, you can also access them through Canyon Spirit's Guest Portal. Please keep your final travel documents with you at all times by printing or storing a copy on your mobile.

Which airport should I fly to?

Denver International Airport (DEN)
If your Canyon Spirit journey begins in Denver, Denver International Airport (DEN) is the closest option. Travelers can use the airport rail, the A-line, to travel to the heart of downtown Denver at Denver Union Station which takes approximately 37 minutes.

Canyonlands Regional Airport (CNY)
If your Canyon Spirit journey begins in Moab, Canyonlands Regional Airport (CNY) is the closest option. It is located 18 miles (29 km) northwest of the town. Shuttle service from the airport to Moab is available through Moab Express, a local transportation provider. Advance reservations are required.

Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT)
If your Canyon Spirit journey begins in Moab, you may also fly into nearby Grand Junction which is located 113 miles (182 km) from Moab. This larger airport offers more flight options, and Moab Express also provides shuttle service from Grand Junction to Moab.

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)
If your Canyon Spirit journey begins in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is the closest option.

What meals do I receive?

Please refer to your package details and travel documents to see which meals are included in your itinerary. All meals, snacks, and beverages served onboard the train are included.

Are we able to pass between rail coaches?

Guests who have booked Canyon Spirit's Signature experience are not able to move between rail coaches during the journey. However, each coach offers ample space to move around, including access to an outdoor viewing area where you can enjoy some fresh air. Guests who book a Premier upgrade are able to exit their rail coach and enjoy exclusive access to a dedicated lounge car for added comfort and space.

Is there Wi-Fi available onboard?

There is no Wi-Fi onboard, and much of the route passes through remote landscapes where cell/mobile service is limited. Mobile service is available in major urban centers, including the mid-rail journey overnight stops. To make the most of this immersive journey, we encourage guests to disconnect, be present, and enjoy the scenery. When service is available, we recommend guests use the outdoor viewing area with an open-air-style window for phone calls.

Is one side of the train better than the other in terms of views?

No, each direction will offer its own opportunities for unique views and scenic highlights. In the sections of our route where the train follows a river, the tracks will cross over a bridge to give all guests the opportunity to be waterside. Canyon Spirit encourages their guests to get up from their seats, move around the coach, meet their fellow guests, and experience the views from various vantage points. Don’t forget to spend some time in the outdoor viewing area, which features an open-air-style window for fresh air and unobstructed views.

What languages are spoken onboard the train?

All onboard services and written materials will be presented in English. While some of Canyon Spirit's onboard Hosts may speak additional languages, they cannot guarantee that any language other than English will be available.

What speed does the train travel?

While there are areas where the train reaches up to 60 mph (90 km/h), the average speed is approximately 30 mph (50 km/h). Canyon Spirit's train is able to slow down at the most scenic areas to offer guests the best viewing and camera opportunities. They call it "picture-perfect speed".

What wildlife will I see?

Canyon Spirit travels through the diverse landscapes of the American Southwest, offering opportunities to spot regional wildlife. While sightings are never guaranteed, guests may see animals such as mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and wild turkeys. Birdwatchers might also spot bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, osprey, and ravens soaring above the canyons.

If you do encounter wildlife, please observe responsibly by keeping a safe distance and never feeding animals. Your onboard Hosts will often point out wildlife when spotted, adding to the storytelling experience of your journey.
