It’s time to hit the road on your next tour, and you have inevitably succumbed to the compelling desire to visit New Zealand. Who can blame you? Rich with culture and scenery, the Land of the Long White Cloud has an undeniable appeal – good choice!
The next big decision; North or South?
The North Island has picturesque beaches for a seaside escape and geothermal hot spots where you can marvel at the wrath of nature or soak in mineral-laden waters. Enjoy the balmy breezes and calm waters of the Bay of Islands, scrunch your toes in the white sand beaches of the Coromandel, or check out the bubbling mud pools and spurting geysers around Rotorua.
The North Island is also a good choice to immerse yourself in city-buzz as you explore the sprawling expanse of Auckland or discover the museums and art scene of Wellington. Maori culture is also rich in the north where you are likely glimpse traditional meeting houses (marae) and enjoy cultural performances. Home to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, history and culture flows strong on the North Island.
The South Island is rich with alpine scenery, snow-capped peaks, and icy phenomenon. Take a guided hike or scenic flight over Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers, or wind through the Mount Cook National Park for a glimpse of New Zealand’s tallest mountain dusted in snow. Venture further south to visit Milford and Doubtful Sounds, snaking their way through the Fiordland National Park where snow-capped peaks jut from ink-blue waters.
Rich with national parks to hike and lakes to kayak, the South Island is perfect if you want to explore the outdoors. The crowning jewel of the south, Queenstown, is referred to as the ‘adventure capital’ and is the perfect place to get your heart pumping – bungy-jump, jetboat, and mountain bike to your heart’s content. Despite its adrenaline-inducing reputation, you can get plenty of relaxation in the south. Kick back and enjoy the scenery… and did we mention the wine?
We have almost the same number of tours visiting the North and South Island, so whichever you choose, you will be splendidly rewarded with stunning landscapes and unforgettable experiences… and you can always go back for more! Check out all New Zealand tours to find your perfect trip, and maybe opt to see both islands if you have a little more time on your hands.
