Overview

Take in South America's scenic wonders as you sail around the continent's southern tip. Begin in Buenos Aires, birthplace of the tango. Continue on to eclectic Montevideo and Welsh-flavored Puerto Madryn before visiting the 'Penguin Capital of the World,' the Falkland Islands. Take in Ushuaia's spectacular scenery and cruise through the Beagle Channel. Call on Chile's coastal jewels and marvel at its magnificent fjords before ending in vibrant Santiago.

Itinerary

Arrive in Buenos Aires today, Argentina's cosmopolitan capital. Settle in to your veranda stateroom and take time to explore your ship. As we dock here overnight, you will have plenty of time to explore. Be captivated by the bohemian flair of La Boca, marvel at the grand homes of Recoleta, one of the finest quarters of the city, and discover the many facets of Buenos Aires. Walk in the footsteps of Eva Péron. You will see the ornate Casa Rosada, the presidential palace that was once her home, and visit her final resting place at La Recoleta Cemetery as you discover the story of the much-loved first lady and inspiration for the Broadway musical Evita.

Enjoy more of Buenos Aires as you walk Avenida Corrientes, the bustling thoroughfare of theaters, shops and cafés known as the street that never sleeps. Buenos Aires is a dazzling feast for the senses. Narrow streets in the city's colorful neighborhoods reverberate with the intoxicating melodies of the tango. Meanwhile, restaurants are busy perfecting the art of grilling meats for patrons, and the city's parks and plazas invite passersby to linger and watch the world of Buenos Aires go by.

Visit Uruguay's scenic capital, which was founded in 1724 after the Spanish overran a Portuguese fort and settled the area. Today, you can board a vintage steam train through Montevideo's Old Town. Or, head outside the city to learn about daily life on a traditional, family-run working ranch. You can also enliven your taste buds with a guided tour of one of the city's premier wineries, Viña Varela Zarranz.

Relax on board as you learn more about your upcoming destinations during an informative port talk and explore your ship. Experience the serenity of the Wintergarden, where you can enjoy afternoon tea service under an elegant canopy of Scandinavian trellised wood. At night, take in a recent movie in one of our three theaters—two indoor and one under the stars at the Main Pool.

At night, take in a recent movie in one of our three theaters—two indoor and one under the stars at the Main Pool.

Depart your ship and head to the Valdéz Peninsula, which is connected to the continent by a narrow strip of land. Enjoy its natural beauty and biodiversity before visiting Caleta Valdés to observe a large elephant seal colony. Or, immerse yourself in the history of the area's Welsh settlers with a trip to the town of Dolavon and the city of Gaiman, where the Welsh language is still spoken.

Stay in shape at sea with a visit to our Sports Deck, or take a gentle stroll around our 360˚ Promenade Deck. As you cruise, take in the sea views from the Explorers' Lounge or reserve a soothing massage at The Spa. Linger over tea and scones in the Wintergarden or soak up the sun on deck.

More than 300 miles off the coast of South America lies the rugged archipelago of the Falkland Islands. Here, you will find several hundred sparsely inhabited islands with unspoiled nature and diverse fauna. Some 60 distinct bird species breed on the islands, including five different species of penguin and some of the world's largest colonies of albatross. Visit the world's most southerly Anglican church and the Whalebone Arch, explore the historic streets of Port Stanley, and meet the renowned landlady at Kay McCullum's Bed & Breakfast.

Spend an additional day exploring these remote islands and view the stunning wildlife up close. The Falkland Islands refer to themselves as the 'Penguin Capital of the World,' as more than 1 million of the birds nest on these islands. See the gentoo penguin, with a vivid white stripe across its head and a bright orange bill.

As you cruise the South Atlantic, enjoy refreshments in the Explorers' Lounge and mingle with fellow travelers, and share your experiences.

At the very tip of South America, Ushuaia prides itself on being the southernmost city in the world. The city's spectacular natural surroundings with subantarctic forests, lovely lakes, pristine glaciers and rich peat bogs are its main asset, but Ushuaia's history as a penal colony of sorts at the 'End of the World' makes the city itself an interesting place. Visit the former prison, which today houses a museum, or soak up the scenery on a drive through Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Enjoy two scenic days as you cruise around Cape Horn, once the pinnacle of a seafarer's career, and through the Beagle Channel. The Cape marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans meet. Retrace the epic voyage of Charles Darwin through the Beagle Channel, the narrow strait separating the main island of Tierra del Fuego from a string of smaller islands to the south. The area has not lost any of its stark natural beauty since Darwin described it in lyrical terms in 1833.

Today, perhaps use the Viking Art & Design Guide app to enhance a self-guided tour of your ship's art collection. Enjoy insightful commentary about these artworks and our unique Scandinavian spaces as you peruse a thoughtfully curated collection of classic and contemporary paintings, sculptures and photographs by esteemed Scandinavian artists.

Chile's southernmost city sits on the north shore of the Strait of Magellan, named after the Portuguese explorer who pioneered the sea route around South America in 1520. Its heritage as an explorer's haven still remains to this day, with many expeditions to Antarctica beginning from here. The beautiful yet rugged landscape of this sparsely populated region was once thought to be inhabited by Patagonian giants. Experience its mystique on a helicopter flight over the spectacular peaks of the Torres del Paine National Park, or explore the city's charm on a scenic drive as you take in the highlights.

Enjoy two days at sea as you cruise through a maze of waterways, admire beautiful mountain scenery and witness magnificent glaciers. Learn more about your upcoming port, Puerto Chacabuco, during a port talk in our onboard theater. Later, perhaps take in an enriching lecture by our Viking Resident Historian, who delivers high-level historical and cultural education specific to your journey.

On the southern end of the Aisén Fjord lies Puerto Chacabuco, the perfect base to explore more of the surrounding countryside. Marvel at magnificent scenery as you witness rocky gorges, placid lakes, waterfalls and flower-covered meadows. Visit the Rio Simpson National Reserve and its diverse flora and fauna, or gain in-depth knowledge of the local flora and fauna during a walk through the Aiken del Sur Park.

Enjoy a landscape of snowy peaks, massive blue glaciers from which waterfalls tumble into the sea and steep-sided fjords, a land of great pristine beauty accessible only by ship. For centuries, seafarers have used the maze of channels to travel up and down the Chilean coast in the sheltered waters of the Chilean fjords.

Today, you will call on the city of Puerto Montt, situated on the north side of a sheltered bay and less than 20 miles from the summit of the Osorno volcano. A main city in Chile's lakes region, Puerto Montt boasts beautiful scenery. Snowcapped volcanoes, lush green fields and forested national parks dominate the landscape. Enjoy a panoramic drive through the scenic villages and towns, and visit the German Colonial Museum to explore the life and times of the early German settlers.

Spend another relaxing day cruising the waters of the Pacific Ocean. As you sail, you might take a swim in the Infinity Pool. Join new friends for afternoon tea in the Wintergarden or relax on board as you sip a cocktail by the pool.

Blessed with a magnificent setting in a steep natural amphitheater turned toward the Pacific, Valparaíso charms visitors with its colorful labyrinthine streets that rise up from the water's edge and through the hills. Funiculars carry pedestrians up and down the slopes, where they ascend to marvel at the views over the port, and where artists, authors and poets have come for generations seeking inspiration. Explore fascinating Valparaíso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a panoramic tour of its historic landmarks.

Disembark your ship this morning as your journey comes to a close. Alternatively, you may choose to extend your time in Chile with a post-cruise extension in Santiago.

Thanks Tracey, the cruise and itinerary was first class with nothing too much trouble for the friendly Viking crew. Viking Homelands 11 , WA, Australia, Aug 2019
We were so impressed with our recent ocean cruise onboard the Viking Sky. We boarded the ship on 25th August to do The Viking Homelands, and loved everything about the whole journey. So much to do onboard with space for everyone and the free excursions in every port with excellent local guides and time to explore afterwards, as well as optional more ...read more in-depth tours on offer. The service throughout was exceptional, as was the food and restaurant choices .

The Baltic offers so much in scenery, culture and history in a compact area and charming ports along the way. We love the mid-size ships and there was no hassles or queues getting off or on, the organisation was well done. We were blessed with wonderful weather everywhere which even Viking couldn’t have planned, only two showers in the whole two weeks, so all the warm clothing and raincoats were hardly needed. Viking Ocean cruising ... hard to fault 12 , QLD, Australia, Aug 2019
Thanks Jemma at Global Journeys for all the work to get us on this fabulous trip. The planning and documentation phases were perfect - as was the trip. We had travelled on a Viking river cruise before - so felt confident of our choice for Viking for an ocean cruise. Wow - the Viking ocean performance was absolutely fantastic in every aspect - from the ...read more pick up at the airport, including porters for our luggage to our cabins, to an outstanding itinerary, marvellous staff, food, entertainment and variety of shore excursions. The itinerary was amazing - taking in small and large ports with amazing scenery and activities onshore.

Iceland was amazing and provided stunning scenery. The trip to the Golden Triangle was well worthwhile as an optional extension trip. The days at sea between Iceland and the Faroes and Faroes to Norway were relaxing and filled with interesting activities. Faroe Islands also had much to offer and the stop at Torshavn and included tour gave a real insight into the life of this remote place. The 4 stops in Norway were also lovely and the trips to Geiranger and Flam were excellent with great shore excursions by coaches winding up amazingly steep mountains with spectacular views.

Everything about the trip and Viking was excellent - so much so that we've booked another Viking ocean cruise for next year. Viking has spoilt us for all other cruise lines and we won't be looking further when seeking a company for our future cruising holidays. Thanks Jemma and Viking for a memorable and wonderful time.
Excellent cruise on Viking Sky, a lovely ship 10 , NSW, Australia, Jun 2019
First time we have sailed with Viking and will do so again if the right itinerary comes along. There seemed to be plenty of space on the ship. Entertainment was excellent and food was good. Met some lovely people on the cruise.
