Overview

Discover indigenous traditions and colonial influences on this enlightening cruise along the western coast of the Americas. Begin with an overnight in Santiago, Chile's modern capital. Shop for traditional pottery in La Serena and take in Iquique's seaside splendor. See Peru's UNESCO-rich cities of Arequipa, Pisco and Lima, a beautiful blend of natural reserves and Inca ruins. Visit Ecuador and Panama, where awe-inspiring landscapes and vibrant cultures abound.

Itinerary

Embark your ship in Santiago this morning, Chile's modern capital blanketed with green parks and set at the foot of snowcapped Andean peaks. Settle in to your veranda stateroom and take time to explore your ship or the port of Valparaíso. Blessed with a magnificent setting in a steep natural amphitheater turned toward the Pacific, Valparaíso charms visitors with its colorful labyrinthine streets that rise up from the water's edge and through the hills. Funiculars carry pedestrians up and down the slopes, where they ascend to marvel at the views over the port, and where artists, authors and poets have come for generations seeking inspiration.

On your final day in Santiago, you can head to the Casablanca Valley, renowned for its vineyards and wineries. This region benefits from soil and weather conditions similar to the Napa and Sonoma valleys in California. Visit a local winery in this celebrated region and enjoy a tasting of a selection of wines.

Coquimbo was an important port for the gold and copper industry during the 19th century. Perhaps head up the coast to nearby La Serena, the second-oldest city in Chile and home to beautiful beaches and colorful residences. Browse La Recova Market for traditional pottery and handicrafts. Or, visit Cerro Tololo Observatory, considered one of the best astronomical observation points in the world. Discover El Valle Encantado, 'The Enchanted Valley,' where the ancient Molle people left their artwork engraved and painted on the rock faces.

As you sail the Pacific Ocean today, relax in the Explorers' Lounge and enjoy the spectacular vistas from the ship. As you cruise, mingle with newfound friends in The Living Room, browse the Scandinavian-inspired artwork throughout your ship and attend a port talk about your upcoming destinations.

Nestled between the ocean and the Atacama Desert, Iquique is an unassuming gem and one of Chile's premier beach resorts. Start in Arturo Prat Square, with its stately Municipal Theater, elegant Casino Español and the Gothic and Moorish-style Clock Tower. Walk down the wooden sidewalks of Baquedano Boulevard and admire the well-preserved Georgian-style homes from the city's 19th-century mining boom. Travel into the desert and explore the abandoned mining town of Humberstone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or, spend your time relaxing at popular Cavancha beach while watching surfers and paragliders play among the waves.

Experience Arequipa, the 'White City' of Peru—so named because many of its baroque-style buildings are constructed from sillar, a white volcanic stone. Take a guided tour around the historic downtown to see the major landmarks, including the stately Plaza de Armas and the 17th-century cathedral. Or, visit the Mejía National Sanctuary, a coastal reserve that is home to many species of migratory and resident birds.

Stay in shape at sea with a visit to the Sports Deck, or take a gentle stroll around our 360˚ Promenade. As you cruise, take in the sea views from the Explorers' Lounge or reserve a soothing massage at The Spa. Linger over tea and scones in the Wintergarden or soak up the sun on deck.

Arrive today in Pisco, a charming town known for its namesake grape brandy. Tour the Tambo Colorado, the remnants of an Incan complex that earned its name from the abundant use of color on its adobe walls. You can get closer to nature with a visit to the Paracas National Reserve's Islas Ballestas, a collection of islands off-limits to humans, but home to many species of birds. Take to the air for a bird's-eye view of the Nazca Lines, or enjoy a ride over the sand dunes in a dune buggy.

Revel in the rich history and vibrant culture of bustling Lima, the capital of Peru. This modern metropolis perched atop coastal cliffs is an eclectic mix of old and new. See the 16th-century cathedral and Presidential Palace in Lima's historic downtown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or visit one of the many stately museums to learn about Peruvian culture from pre-Columbian times to the present. Visit the trendy district of Barranco to learn the secrets of Peruvian cuisine, or tour the elegant Casa Aliaga—home to the same family for 17 generations.

Relax on board for two days, indulging in the amenities of your ship. You might find your inner calm with yoga on the Sports Deck. Lounge by the Main Pool with its retractable roof or enjoy a cocktail at the Aquavit Bar. Tonight after an al fresco dinner at the World Café, settle in for some light jazz and a nightcap at Torshavn.

Anchor in the port city of Manta, known for its tuna-fishing industry and white-sand beaches. Learn about Manta's connection to the sea while browsing the iconic Fish Market, where fishermen and locals barter over the catch of the day. Head inland to visit the colonial town of Montecristi, the birthplace of the Panama hat, or savor the mouthwatering tastes of Manabita cuisine—a fusion of indigenous and Spanish traditions.

Enjoy the range of amenities on board as you spend four days at sea, cruising the Pacific Ocean. Sign up for a variety of activities on our Sports Deck, or join a cooking class and enhance your culinary repertoire. You may visit Mamsen's, our casual gourmet deli, any time from early morning to late night for a taste of traditional Norwegian fare. Or, perhaps renew your body and spirit in our Scandinavian-inspired Spa, a Nordic sanctuary of holistic wellness, today while at sea. Indulge in a soothing massage, facial or body treatment.

Disembark your ship this morning and discover the Panama City of today and yesterday with a tour of its modern downtown and colonial-era El Casco Antiguo, or Old Town. No visit to the city would be complete without a trip to the Panama Canal. When it opened in 1914, it was hailed as one of the world's great engineering feats. Forty-eight miles long, it links the Atlantic and Pacific at the narrowest stretch of the Isthmus of Panama, cutting thousands of miles off shipping routes that once stretched all the way around Cape Horn at the tip of South America.

Relax on your stateroom veranda today as you sail the vast Pacific Ocean. Tonight, dine at The Chef's Table, where you can enjoy a multicourse tasting menu complete with wine pairings.

Sail into the scenic Gulf of Nicoya this morning, dotted with pristine islands and surrounded by Costa Rica's tropical splendor, magnificent beaches and rich wildlife. Here, you will call on the sleepy fishing village of Puntarenas and venture to a nearby rainforest, where you will follow trails under the dense canopy. Keep your ears and eyes open for howler monkeys and colorful scarlet macaws in the trees as you explore this lush wilderness.

Spend another relaxing day cruising the waters of the Pacific Ocean. As you sail, you might take a swim in the Infinity Pool. Join new friends for afternoon tea in the Wintergarden or relax on board as you sip a cocktail by the pool.

Cruise into Puerto Quetzal this morning, a pair of towering volcanoes overseeing your arrival in the distance. You will journey into the central highlands to the well-preserved city of Antigua, the capital of Spain's Central American colonies for more than 200 years and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its streets lined with Spanish Renaissance and baroque churches, monasteries and homes.

Trace the coast of Central America along the Pacific Ocean, which encompasses one-third of the earth's surface. Before the United States established its transcontinental railroad, many prospectors seeking gold once sailed these waters en route to California. Rather than risk the perils of traveling across America's great divide, they sailed down to the Isthmus of Panama, trekked across its narrow band and continued on the route you follow today.

Anchor near the tip of the Baja Peninsula today for your visit to Cabo San Lucas, 'Cabo' to its more frequent visitors. One of Mexico's top destinations for its long beaches, resorts, scuba diving and picturesque rocky coast, it boasts one of the region's most scenic harbors. Get acquainted with a panoramic tour of the resort city, San José del Cabo, sister to Cabo San Lucas and the oldest Spanish mission on the Baja Peninsula.

Sail around the Baja Peninsula. Early explorers ventured into these once-unknown waters for many years in search of California, then a mythical El Dorado that seemed just out of reach. One Spanish author called it 'very close to the side of the Terrestrial Paradise.' Today, the Baja Peninsula is among the world's most picturesque coasts. As you approach California, perhaps you will visit the onboard cinema to view a movie produced in a Los Angeles studio.

Visit the historic Gaslamp Quarter on a panoramic tour, or soar over the city's skyline on a thrilling helicopter ride. Head to the world-famous San Diego Safari Park to see animals in their natural habitat and explore walk-through exhibits. With renowned attractions and near perfect weather, San Diego calls itself 'America's Finest City.'

Arrive in Los Angeles today, the 'City of Angels' scenically set below the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains and near the Pacific Ocean. Pull back the veil to discover the secrets of the entertainment capital of the United States. Join an exciting behind-the-scenes tour of Hollywood, where movies, stars and dreams are made.

Viking Homelands 11 , WA, Australia, Aug 2019
We were so impressed with our recent ocean cruise onboard the Viking Sky. We boarded the ship on 25th August to do The Viking Homelands, and loved everything about the whole journey. The Baltic offers so much in scenery, culture and history in a compact area and charming ports along the way. We love the mid-size ships and there was no hassles or queues getting off or on, the organisation was well done. We were blessed with wonderful weather everywhere which even Viking couldn’t have planned, only two showers in the whole two weeks, so all the warm clothing and raincoats were hardly needed. Viking Ocean cruising ... hard to fault 12 , QLD, Australia, Aug 2019
Thanks Jemma at Global Journeys for all the work to get us on this fabulous trip. The planning and documentation phases were perfect - as was the trip. We had travelled on a Viking river cruise before - so felt confident of our choice for Viking for an ocean cruise. Wow - the Viking ocean performance was absolutely fantastic in every aspect - from the ...read more pick up at the airport, including porters for our luggage to our cabins, to an outstanding itinerary, marvellous staff, food, entertainment and variety of shore excursions. The itinerary was amazing - taking in small and large ports with amazing scenery and activities onshore.

Iceland was amazing and provided stunning scenery. The trip to the Golden Triangle was well worthwhile as an optional extension trip. The days at sea between Iceland and the Faroes and Faroes to Norway were relaxing and filled with interesting activities. Faroe Islands also had much to offer and the stop at Torshavn and included tour gave a real insight into the life of this remote place. The 4 stops in Norway were also lovely and the trips to Geiranger and Flam were excellent with great shore excursions by coaches winding up amazingly steep mountains with spectacular views.

Everything about the trip and Viking was excellent - so much so that we've booked another Viking ocean cruise for next year. Viking has spoilt us for all other cruise lines and we won't be looking further when seeking a company for our future cruising holidays. Thanks Jemma and Viking for a memorable and wonderful time.

First time we have sailed with Viking and will do so again if the right itinerary comes along. There seemed to be plenty of space on the ship. Entertainment was excellent and food was good. Met some lovely people on the cruise.
