Overview

Discover natural beauty and rich cultures on a journey along Brazil’s scenic coast and the island of the Caribbean. From the 'Gateway to the Amazon' in Rio de Janeiro, to the inviting peacefulness of Îles du Salut, you will experience an inspiring mix of vibrant cities, lush rainforests and white-sand beaches. In the Caribbean, each day brings a new island and another opportunity to revel among stunning tropical landscapes and welcoming island cultures.

Itinerary

Arrive in Rio de Janeiro and step on board your ship to begin your journey. Your overnight stay allows time to discover this colorful city on your own.

The Cidade Maravilhosa, or 'Marvelous City,' is blessed with a stunning setting so unique that UNESCO gave it World Heritage Site status. Gaze at the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue perched atop Corcovado mountain and admire the azure-blue waters as they lap against the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Take a cable car to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain and marvel at the panoramic vistas below.

Búzios was a sleepy fishing port before French actress Brigitte Bardot visited in 1964. Soon wealthy international visitors started to arrive, attracted by its beautiful beaches, lush landscapes and tranquil, carefree atmosphere. Discover Búzios charm as you stroll the cobblestone streets, browsing the art galleries and boutique shops of this upscale resort. Anchor offshore on a catamaran for a swim or snorkel among colorful coral reefs and tropical fish.

Learn about the importance of the Abrolhos Seascape, the South Atlantic's largest and most biodiverse ecosystem. Spread across 37,000 square miles, this seascape is home to a large concentration of unique coral structures and is an important habitat for endangered sea turtle species.

As the first capital of Brazil, Salvador de Bahia's roots go back to the 16th century. The city has preserved many Renaissance buildings while retaining its unique blend of European, African and South American influences. Enjoy a walking tour through the maze of bustling streets to explore this diverse and vibrant city. Learn about the complex ecosystem of Dunes Park during a guided hike and discover the Atlantic Forest while cruising the Pojuca River.

Relax on board and join the Viking Resident Scientists to deepen your understanding of the undersea geology of the region.

Navigate the maze of waterways that wind their way through the heart of Recife Antigo, the Old City, and past opulent colonial buildings that line the banks. Learn how an NGO is helping the once-struggling Ilha de Deus (God's Island) prosper through sustainable practices. Marvel at the power of Primavera Falls, or spend the day relaxing in the Brazilian countryside at a working farm.

Relax on board and visit The Nordic Spa. So you can deepen your understanding of your destinations, Viking Resident Scientists offer lectures and workshops.

Today, explore the city at the mouth of the Amazon; bustling Belém is known for the many mango trees that grace its boulevards and squares. Witness the fascinating vestiges of Old Portugal along its streets: the soaring neoclassical baroque Cathedral of Sé, the waterfront Ver-o-Peso market brimming with all manner of local goods and the intricately painted azulejos on colonial buildings.

Enjoy a second day to explore Belém. Experience life along the numerous channels that comprise the Guamá River during a journey to the village of Boa Vista do Acará, where you will meet the locals, known as Ribeirinhos. You will also have an opportunity to stroll through the historic Cidade Velha (Old City), marveling at local landmarks before enjoying a cooking demonstration and tasting of a traditional specialty.

Study how currents off the coast of Brazil influence the larger oceanic currents of the Atlantic. Learn more about the Brazil Current, a warm water current that flows south along the Brazilian coast to the mouth of the Plata River.

Call on Île Royale (Royal Island), one of the three Îles du Salut that belong to the French Guiana mainland. These three 'Islands of Salvation' were a much-feared penal colony for the most notorious French criminals. You will see monkeys in the wild, as well as tropical birds and small rodent-like mammals as you explore, then admire scenic views over the whole island.

Spend the day at sea sailing the Atlantic waters. As you sail, you might take a swim in The Pools. Join your fellow guests to recount the favorite highlights of your adventure or relax on board as you sip a cocktail at the Aquavit Bar.

Relish the intense Caribbean beauty of Barbados today when you call on its capital, Bridgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will discover ample evidence of British rule here, from cricket matches and afternoon tea to the Commonwealth's third-oldest parliament. Marvel at spectacular vistas from the heights of the Highland Adventure Center, descending to sea level for a tour of Bridgetown. Or, head underground to explore the stalactites and stalagmites of Harrison's Cave.

Discover complex ecosystems of the lush mountainous island of St. Lucia during a hike up the slopes of Gros Piton. Take a guided walk through the Grand Eden Estate in search of the island's endemic bird species or glimpse the island's colonial past and natural beauty during a horseback ride through the Morne Coubaril Estate. Alternatively, take to the ocean and slip beneath the waves to explore the wonders that surround St. Lucia's coast during a snorkeling excursion.

Learn about the history of Montserrat during a hike to view pre-Colombian petroglyphs, or learn about the effects of Soufriére Hills volcano's recent eruptions and the island's efforts to rebuild. Or, you may choose to explore the island's local wildlife during a swim to Rendezvous Bluff's famous bat cave or on a hike to the island's best bird-watching spots.

Marvel at the marine beauty of St. Bart's by snorkeling over a coral reef or cruising in the comfort of a glass-bottom, semi-submersible vessel. Or, stay on land, crisscrossing the island in an all-terrain vehicle as you journey to famous local landmarks.

Immerse in Virgin Gorda's natural beauty during a hike or snorkel in its famous national park, The Baths. Glide across the water in a RIB, exploring the scenic coastline en route to the white-sand beaches and warm turquoise waters of the island of Anegada. Or, take to the air for a bird's-eye view of the British Virgin Islands during an exhilarating flightseeing excursion.

Explore the lush foothills of El Yunque National Forest, a tropical rainforest, on horseback or by foot, or paddle through the mangrove forest at Laguna Grande for a chance to see the sparkling swirls of water glowing with bioluminescent microorganisms. Alternatively, relax in the sun or snorkel during a scenic boat trip to an uninhabited island in the La Cordillera Nature Reserve.

Spend your final days at sea sailing Atlantic waters. As you sail, you might take a swim in The Pools. Join your fellow guests one last time to recount the favorite highlights of your adventure or relax on board as you sip a cocktail at the Aquavit Bar.
