A town of only 1,100 inhabitants, Upernavik is located in the picturesque Archipelago consisting of over 100 rocky islands. Officially founded in 1772, this area had been explored by Inuit hunters much earlier. A Viking runestone was also found atop a mountain just to the west of Upernavik, dating the area to approximately the 13th century.
