Welcome to Day 1 of your tour to the Bay of Islands. We hope you're an early bird as you'll be hopping on the bus from Auckland at 7.30 am and travelling up to Paihia, known as the gateway to the Bay of Islands. This is a scenic drive to the subtropical “Winterless North”, and you can expect to arrive in Paihia around late morning. This afternoon, enjoy a half day kayaking experience in the stunning Bay of Islands with a 1pm pick-up from Coastal Kayaks,Te Karuwha Parade, Paihia. Paddle in clear coastal waters, in front of Paihia and Waitangi and keep an eye out for local wildlife such as dolphins! This evening why not sample one of the local eateries Paihia has to offer. For stunning sea views, we recommend Terra Restaurant, or Charlotte's Kitchen. Alternatively, take advantage of the shared kitchen facilities at Haka Lodge Paihia, and cook in style with breath-taking beachfront views of the bay.

Local Tips:
This morning you'll be introduced to Ngāpuhi, the largest Māori tribe and join in a war canoe voyage before gaining entry into the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The tour departs at 9am and through interactive participation you'll gain a deeper understanding of the Maori cultural values and principles. Ancient histories and stories are shared with you paddle a 40ft Waka Taua (War Canoe) together on the tidal estuaries of the Waitangi River. An unforgettable experience! In the afternoon you can roam around the quaint town of Russell, just a 15min ferry ride from Paihia centre. Russell was the first permanent European settlement and seaport in New Zealand, so you can explore its history as you wander through the town. Why not stop for a refreshment at one of the waterfront establishments, such as The Duke pub. If you're feeling adventurous, take a walk up Flagstaff Hill to get some stunning views of the town and bay, or walk over the other side to Long Beach and take a dip or relax on the beach.

Local Tips:
Get ready for a full day of exploring Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach, the most northern tip of New Zealand and where the Tasman and Pacific oceans collide. This area is also steeped in cultural significance as according to mythology, Cape Reinga is the place where spirits of the dead depart this world on their journey home to Hawaiki (the original home of the Polynesians). You'll jump on the bus at 7am today and stop at Puketi Kauri Forest (get up close to the mighty Kauri trees, thought to be one of the longest-living species in the world), before arriving at 90 mile beach late morning. Hit the sand dunes for some sand surfing (yes this is a thing!), before heading onto Cape Reinga and walking to the lighthouse. After all this excitement , enjoy a traditional Kiwi meal of fish and chips!
Inclusions:
This morning is free for you to take advantage of one of the many optional activities Paihia has to offer, such as a boat trip around the famous hole in the rock. Alternatively if you're feeling tired, simply relax on the beach or wander around the local shops. You'll be catching the bus at 1.30pm from Paihia back to Auckland so we suggest you grab a bite to eat before your journey ahead. This evening, back in Auckland why not check out the bars and restaurants in the Viaduct area or if you're feeling energetic, take a walk up one of Auckland's volcanic cones, Mount Eden. This is the natural highest point of the city, and you'll be justly rewarded from the climb with 360 degree views. Why not add an extra night to your stay? Enjoy a night in Auckland to maximise your trip.
