Itinerary

Welcome to YHA Hawkshead! Our atmospheric grade II listed accommodation is a perfect rural escape in Beatrix Potter country. With comfortable rooms, an on-site licensed bar and easy access to the southern fells and Lake Windermere, you’ll have everything you need on hand to make the most of your stay in the Lake District. Expect tranquil views, great beer and plenty of Regency charm.

After we check in, our trusted Trip Manager will give us an orientation of Hawkshead, taking us through all the main attractions. This picturesque village will captivate you with its cute selection of tea rooms and pubs, cobblestone streets with charming whitewashed houses & lots of little courtyards and squares. Cars are completely banned from the village, giving us complete freedom to wander around and admire all the 17th century buildings and take in the Cumbrian culture. We’ll end our first day with a delicious included dinner at a local restaurant. (D) Stay: YHA Hawkshead (or similar)

We won’t waste too much time lazing around this morning, as we’ve got a full day ahead of us. We’ll grab some breakfast then whisk ourselves off for a fully guided Fell Hike, followed by lots of exciting outdoor activities on 5000 acres of private land at Graythwaite Estate. Here you can brush up on your bushcraft survival skills, and enjoy a private lesson in archery and axe-throwing. We’ll throw in a well-deserved coffee, tea, and s’mores break in between. This evening we’ll return to our accommodation, just in time for another lovely dinner at one of the local pubs. (B/L/D)

Rise and shine, another exciting day awaits! After enjoying a hearty breakfast, you’ve got a free morning to explore the village or go on a hike of your choice (we recommend trying the Old Man of Coniston Hike). This afternoon we'll depart for a guided fell walk on the shores of Lake Windermere and a chance to soak up all the beautiful scenery. If you're feeling adventurous, have a go at the various included water sports available, like kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, or canoeing. Don’t want to return to the accommodation just yet? Our thoughts exactly. Join us on a guided hike to Far Sawrey and a return ferry ride crossing to Bowness on Windermere, for a spectacular end to this one-of-a-kind trip. (B)

One last breakfast together and then it’s time to check out. Say goodbye to your new friends, exchange contact details and then start planning your next adventure! (B)

Great Staycation 0 , United Kingdom, Sep 2021
This trip was an amazing staycation! It was my first trip with Contiki and I’ll definitely book another trip! The trip manager Anna was great and pointed out great local spots for free time! There’s lots to do on the trip hiking, archery, ace throwing, bushcraft and the optional water sports was cheap and really fun options of paddle boarding kayaking ...read more or canoeing. The town of Hawkshead is lovely and contains lots of little shops to wonder around, definitely visit the fish and chip shop.
