Spirits will be festive today as we link up in London ready for our King's Day extravaganza. Grab any last minute orange attire then climb onto the coach and get acquainted with the posse. Shortly before we find our ferry to cross the English Channel, we'll be taking in the coastline beauty of the White Cliffs of Dover. They owe their gorgeousness to their composition of chalk - you're feeling astounded and we haven't even left the UK! Off the ferry we arrive in the port town of Calais - French soil!
We travel north via Belgium before reaching...Amsterdam! Here we are! Home of good times and cuteness galore. Fun fact: the city has 1539 bridges, 165 canals, and 2500 house boats. Yes, you read that right, and it's all here for you to explore. Dutch National Day might be two days off, but that doesn't mean we need to delay our celebratory mood - we have a canal cruise & a few beverages to sign up for! (D) Stay: Via Hostel Amsterdam (or similar)
You're going to need some energy preserved to get you through the evening ahead. Second on your to do list is a whole lot of exploring. Today we're indulging in a different kind of dairy delight by visiting a cheese farm producing famous Dutch Edam and the chance to see how clogs are made. We will also be taking a bike ride through Dutch countryside to see working windmills. Talk about a picture perfect scene.
In the city we can explore the endless museums of the city like the Rijks or the Van Gogh, taste the local Heineken drop in its true home, make a sobering stop at Anne Frank House, and that's just the tip of the iceberg of goodness to be found. For those that like the laid-back approach, do some shopping, or just kick back amongst the famed cafe culture.
Tonight we meet up, find a local spot for dinner (pancakes for dessert are a must in these parts we'll have you know) then hit up some sweet nightlife locations in the city center! (B)
And it's King's Day. Wahoo! Expect a cacophony of color (mainly orange) as we embark on one of the Netherlands' biggest, boldest and brightest celebrations. (B)
It's time to hop over Belgian & French terrain and circle back to London. May dressing in orange and spending the day 'going Dutch' bring back this festival trip's memories for many years to come! Back in London, it's time to say our goodbyes and sing any final praise to the damn fine Dutch celebration that just took place. Let's do it all again next year, festive travelers! (B)
